Cue Changes

If you have a cue from a nice maker with a non-fancy butt; is it possible to have the cuemaker add ivory or MOP inlays to a butt that is 25 years old?

In theory I could turn my nice cue into something much fancier.

Don't do it. A friend of mine had a jeweler add a gold star at the butt end of his Paul Mottey cue. The jeweler ruined the finish, and took off a chunk of wood.

anything is possible...

Anything can be done; however, you risk when you do. Depending on how much and what you want to do, you risk changing the way the cue plays and you risk severely degrading the value of an older cue.

If you want to add inlays or ring work it's going to depend on many factors. What type of joint it is, do you want to add ring work at the handle or at the butt/joint...

What types of woods the cue is made of also determines the amount of risk...

You wouldn't want to try and have a cuemaker add ivory diamonds to snakewood points for instance.

Adding MOP dots to gabon ebony points isn't that difficult with a good refinish though...

The real issue here is size and how much warp the cue has.

a cue that old more than likely has a big taper, but if you measured the joint and the buttcap diameter that would tell us more and as far as warp well until you got it on a lathe and put it between centers you really wouldnt know.

can it be done? Absolutley as long as the variables above are within reason.

id say find a local maker and have him take a look at it.

The cue in question is an older Scruggs with the original logo.

It has a plan Butt that looks to be made of a cocobolo or something similiar.

I was not thinking about adding rings but instead of a bunch of MOP or Ivory inlays in the Butt.

I would not want to have a local cuemaker do any work cause I would not want to ruin the value.

I'd say that if you can get Tim to do the work...and it's feasible...it should not have a detrimental effect on the cue's value. Perhaps the only other maker I would suggest touching it would be Bob Frey, since he worked with Tim.

The cue will be thinner than before, and as a result, the weight will be less...but there may be some room for 'play'. Balance point might even change. I would suggest talking to either above and see what they have to say. I certainly wouldn't just let anyone do the work...because you will risk devaluating the cue.

Tim has been retired since the passing of Mike.

I would suggest Bob Frey, or Cory Barnhart to do the work.

I know that Tim does not build cues but I believe he still does repairs and was wondering if he could just update the Butt to make it fancier. I would not want to have a local cuemaker do any work cause I would not want to ruin the value.

Call Tim, if he doesnt want to do it or says it cant be done then maybe its best to leave it alone. There are some cue makers out there that could do it and it would turn out perfectly fine but it will probably cost a decent amount.

Thanks for the feedback.

I did not realize that it would reduce the overall size of the Butt and possibly the weight. I really like how this cue plays so I would hate to make a change that will affect the playability.

I guess I just need to sell more at work so that I can buy another even fancier cue......

If you haven't bought a new cue in 25 years, then you're due...

You will get your best answer from, as suggested, either Bob Frey or Cory Barnhart. They would need to see the cue in order to give you a definitive answer to all possibilities mentioned above. Then you'll know for sure.

Yes, you could lose some weight, however, the inlays will add some back...how much is the question.
