Cue makers who like to use a thinner then normal handle in their cues?

I am curious about cue makers who like to (or who are known) to use a thinner (or much thinner ) then normal handle in their cues?

I always thought that I would love a cue with a much thinner then normal handle in it (because I have pretty small hands), and I also think that a thinner handle would make for a much better long taper in the shaft (but I might be wrong about this).

I am not sure, but I think that snooker cues have a very thin handle .

Anyways, back to my original question.

Do you know of any cue makers that are known to use a thinner then normal handle in their cues?

Thanks.

Pat Diveney is known to make a slimmer butt. I know a sneaky I owned was one. I'll be curious to watch this thread because I prefer thicker handles. I felt I finally loosened my grip when I got a Barnhart, 1.28" at the end.

A truely 'custom' cue maker can make you any size butt you want. I took my 73' Joss to Bob Frey and had him make a SP to the same specs. Then years later, he made me a 'custom' cue with the same specs. This is what a 'custom' cue maker should do, not make every cue the same specs because 'He' likes it that way ( many do ).
Good luck

This is exactly what a custom cue-maker is all about. If you don;t know what you want,
he'll build it the way most folks would like it. But.......if you know what you like and can
articulate that in spoken or written form to the cue-maker.......seems pretty simple to do,
then you will have a cue built exactly as you prefer, not what most other people might like.
The custom cues I've ordered were built to conform to my very exact specifications.
That's the real advantage of having a custom cue built if you know what you want in a cue.

It's been my experience that Joss & Scruggs tend to make/have made their butts a little slimmer than almost any other cue I've played with.
That beings said, it's somewhat subjective as I've never actually measured the butts. It's a just a feeling. -Z-

Justin , I forget the title but there was just a thread about exactly this about a month or two ago and it had a bunch of good info about this very subject. Maybe someone remembers it and can post the title? Also as Djsteve said I believe a lot of folks said this about Scruggs' and I believe Freys as well.

Call Paul Drexler, he'll match any design, weight, balance or feel for any cue.

Well, now I know why I loved the Diveney cue I tried out one night. The cue felt amazing. Loved everything about it.

"Cue makers who like to use a thinner then normal handle in their cues?"

"...thinner THAN normal..."

Then is way back then.

Please define normal?
1.25?
1.30?
1.22?
What is it?

Also, it doesn't really matter who makes what because if you're having
a cue made, just tell the maker what width you want. End of story.

Another thing you might like are the Barioni cues.
One width all the way back. NO taper.
Personally I love it.
Don't understand why cue makers need to be tapering their butts at all.
With Barioni you're always using the same grip.
It's utterly comfortable.

I'm sure a cue maker can make a cue to your specs but I also think you should not move far from a maker's base spec or style. Would you ask Southwest to make a straight taper and a stainless joint? I've seen a Sugartree with a wrap once. I wouldn't ask him to put a wrap on a cue for me as wrapless is his thing.

I plan to figure out my preferred specs/style and then find the maker who is known for similar styles.

I like think handle cues. I have a number of very nice cues. However, I want a Searing to hit like a Searing, a Tascarella like a Tascarella, a Samboti like a Szamboti and Manzino to hit like a Manzino. I tell them i like them thin and let them figure out the balance etc. I am please with every cue I have but I have too many and need to thin the herd.

Tony Scianella of Black Boar cues started making the butts thinner on his 6 point cues back in the 90's today his 8 points along with his African Blackwood players are even thinner.

Ginacue made a slim cue back when he started when it was completely against the norm. I think today most every cuemaker make what is a slimmer cue then was the old norm years ago. That is also why you get a custom cue to get that kind of detail such as butt thickness. All cuemakers offer different butts, just ask them.

Tad cues have a smaller diameter than any other cue I have used.

I used one as my player for a couple of years.

I agree with my pal Phil Dade on this one, sure any (or at least most) custom cue makers will make a cue with a smaller diameter. But I don't recommend having the cue maker change from his standard ANYTHING (pin, joint, and diameter). If you want a cue to play like a Gilbert, then get a Gilbert.

I am not a fan of having other cue makers copying a cue, even if you call it a tribute. I would have more respect if you would just say we copied it. Please give this tribute $hit a break.

Best of rolls,

Ken

thinner

I tend to measure the cues i have at these locations... from the face of the joint - 12" back, 24" back and at the butt...

The thinner ones I have tend to be just a touch under 1" at the 12" mark...

2 of those makers are, Steve Dunkel and Mike Gulyassy ...

I haven't measured all of mine, but I was checking some to establish a baseline of what I like...

I'd establish where your normal hand positions are and check there.

Mike Sigel's custom cues were slim in the butt...which makes perfect sense given his history with Dan Janes of Joss.
I played with one, Mike's actually, and was quite surprised how much I liked it. Now if it could only give me the same results it gives Mike. -Z-
