Let's see some progress on those 23 cues that were ordered from you last Christmas.
I like to see some wands in the making.

I have a Southwest on Order. The question is will it be done before I get my MediCare Card, or before. Due date is about the same.

Speaking of cuemaker time, I once had a Huebler sneaky pete that needed some shaft work done. At the time I was having a cuemaker build me a cue, so I left the Huebler butt and shaft with him, and was told it'd be ready in a year's time when my cue was completed.

Well, it took about two and half years before my new cue was finished, but I wasn't sweating it because I knew he tended to work at a leisurely pace. By that time, I had forgotten all about my Huebler, and it wasn't until like another three years that I remembered taking my Huebler for repairs.

So the next time I visited his shop, I asked him about the cue, to which he responded with a blank stare. He told me that he didn't remember that particular cue, but if it existed it would be in this big storage bin of old and broken cues. I rummaged through there and sure enough there it was--in the same condition that I had brought it in nearly five years earlier. :)

that would piss me off...how can he forget about the cue? doesnt he label the cues he's repairing as they come in?

It was just a simple sneaky pete. Before I took it in, I hardly ever used it anymore, so it was easy for me to forget about.

You'd just have to know this cuemaker. Think his labeling system is inside his head.
 
I'd much prefer to be told 4 months and have it take 4 months than be told 2 months and have it take 3 months. Sincerity and honesty is what it is all about for me. I actually had one cuemaker voluntarily take 100 bucks off because he was late. I didn't mind him be late as I've plenty of cues, but his feeling was that he should pay a price for being late even if I wasn't in a hurry.

Sorry those progress photos are for the customers only because they are the raw stages of the cue and some people take that rather personally, and I feel that since it is their cue, and might not want other's to see the cue in that bulky epoxy stained condition.... So I feel that I do NOT have the right to post them publically until It's completely done without their authorization.....

Now you can take that statement and do what you will with it, but thats just how I am with my pending customer's orders and also for my own sanity so that certain fellow AZ cuemakers are not able to pick my work apart until it's finished....

Also I have given way too much free ammo to my adversaries in the past and simply do NOT want to convert this sincere positive thread into target practice and end up wasting everyone's time so please forgive me if I do NOT comply with your request....

This has ZERO to do with KV... I want to make that perfectly clear !!!

I created this thread for ME so that I can get an accurate feel for realistic turnaround times and to make sure that I'm being reasonable or to find out if I'm cutting myself short !

Please do NOT mention HIM or make any reference to HIM in THIS THREAD !

This is completely about ME wanting to insure proper customer service and not get myself into trouble due to worldwide exposure inexperience !

In closing.. I don't find any humor whatsoever in the KV issue and would prefer not to discuss it any further.. "joking or not" !

I ordered a slightly custom Schmelke a month ago (specific joint size to ensure that another Schmelke shaft would fit nicely), and I got it a week ago, for a total wait time of 3 weeks. Great service, and the wood is very nice.

Yes that is the advantage of production setups... they do have quick turnaround times !

Sure.I believe you. I heard there was an opening for a new skipper of the Exxon Valdez.If you operate a ship the way you create a thread I am sure you will qualify.I guess it really is all about you.

I started this thread to get pertinant info. to help ME with my cuemaking trade and to learn about realistic turaround times from both ends of the spectrum so that I can be efficient without dissappointment to any of MY customers !!!

So yes you are correct this thread is all about ME, and I was asking for help from all of YOU !!!

I agree completely Eddie.
It is no ones else's business.
If the customer wants the photos public let him post them.

However, I can understand people wanting to see what you are up to.
Some want to see what you are making and what it looks like because they are curious about your skills and might be thinking of sending you some business.
Others might use it for target practice and everything you do would be wrong some way or another.

Just the same, I would enjoy seeing photos of what you are making.
I am always admiring other cue makers work but being a cue maker (or assembler) myself I am always asking ... how did he do that ... do I have the skill and knowledge to do something like that?

I get a lot of good ideas from looking at others work.
 
Hi Eddie. I think you are asking in the wrong place. You would be better off asking your past customers personally what they thought of their experience with you. Perhaps send them a questionnaire on information you would like to know about regarding your cues, customer service, follow up service, etc.

Furthermore, I think for those cuemakers (or any custom business) concerned with accurate time estimations, they should keep a log of when the order was taken, when it was estimated to be completed, and when it was ultimately delivered. You could even make a spreadsheet to graph out this data for easy recognition of YOUR personal trends.

So if you consistently see that you are delivering 3 months late, you could either extend your estimations by 3 months, improve your processes to lessen the time to manufacture, or do nothing if you are content with being on average 3 months late.

Measuring yourself is an excellent way to improve yourself. Without accurate measure (of in this one case delivery estimation), it is much harder to improve your product. How do you know if you improved yourself if you did not have a before and after measurement of what you are tying to improve?

I appreciate your advice... however wanted to hear from other cuemaker's customers too as well as the cuemaker's regarding this topic...

It's very important and benficial to me as well as my customers to be as realistic as I can without hurting myself with turnaround times and since AZ is a plethera of info. on this particular subject, I thought I would ask !

I have enjoyed interacting with everyone on here whether it was good or bad and in the end I have gained more knowledge than I have shared from many of the other professional cuesmiths/cuemakers and enthusists... so that indicates to me that this is a very invaluable place to gain plenty of info. about this industry as well as cuemaking, cuesmithing and etc. who freely share their knowledge and expriences with all of us at no charge.

I ordered a fully custom Schmelke, full-splice ebony butt, straight maple forearm, shaft made from same piece of maple as the forearm, 11 mm tip, 1/2 inch ferrule, one of my milk dud tips installed on it, 15 inch pro taper, no Schmelke logo on it, 19 ounces. Oh, and the 5/16 X 18 wood to wood joint, of course.

Took them all of one month to turn that baby out...

Very pleased with the way the cue hits, plays and looks. Nice UV finish: high gloss except for a smooth matt UV finish on the shaft.

Flex, that is kinda hard to answer.

A cue made from start to finish to the specs of the guy that ordered it would certianly be a "custom" cue.
A rack full of look alike cues at the local cue shop would certianly be "production" cues.

Beyond that the line gets hazy.

If you order a cue from a company and they go the the finished cue rack and from dozens of cues that all look alike pick one that meets your specs or perhaps change a thing or two like tip or weight, would that change the production cue into custom cue?

I know the term custom is used very loosely as any production cue can be "customized" by changing the ferrule, tip, weight, shaft profile, and wrap.
If this is done does it become a "custom" cue?
Some would say yes and some would say no.
Is what it is called really matter much to you?
