Curious observation by Mike Sigel

during the IPT commentery tonight. He stated something to the effect of " he and and Efren are the exact SAME age.... efren's great but people don't think he (mike) a can play anymore"

I don't guess I've thought about it much but its exactly correct.
Efren is by most accounts STILL one of the absolute best in the world. Yet,
I have actually seen comments suggesting Mike Sigel is way past his prime, and can no longer compete at the high level he was known for

I personally think once a champion, always a champion... maybe just not as often or for as long.

Efren still competes and mike doesn't.
 
If Mike wants to play Efren, I am sure that could be arranged. His out of retirement party would be over very quickly.

someone correct me if im wrong (which is most of the time), but didn't efren say that the one guy he wouldn't want to gamble with is sigel? or something to that effect....

let's not forget sigel is no slouch....

You've got the wrong birth date for Jim Rempe.
 
I heard Mike Sigel doing commentary at the US Open say that he retired because he had lost that competitive desire. He didn't have the drive to put in the work practicing to stay at the top of his game. He also stated that if he wanted to he could practice hard for a couple of months and win the US Open!

I have another match where Efren and Jerry McWorter did the commentary and during the match Jerry asked Efren who was the toughest player he'd ever played and Efren didn't hesitate and said "MIKE SIGEL" was the toughest.

I believe that Ismael "Morro" Paez should also be on your list. Not sure of his date of birth, but I am positive he's in the same age group.

Mike Sigel may not compete anymore, but he still plays this game better than 95% of the world. I said that about 50 times leading up to the match against John Schmidt and people just rolled their eyes.

I believe John was an underdog playing 14.1 on the slow IPT cloth - and then to have to play a legend such as Mike Sigel on the slow cloth - I am sure John would agree with me that this was a stronger matchup than people were giving it credit for. Mike Sigel is no easy matchup for anybody, including Efren. Just ask him. Efren considers Mike his toughest opponent and THE greatest player he has ever played against.

I purposely left off guys like Morro, Denny Coulter, Danny Barouty, Ernesto Dominguez, etc even though they fit that age group, figuring only a handful would know who I was even talking about.
Morro certainly deserves to be recognized at one of the west coast's greatest players.

well he is over exaggerating if he said that. no one in the world thinks that mike CAN'T play any more. if anything, people probably just think he can't compete with the top players which is most likely true since by his own admission, he doesn't even practice any where near as much as the top players do. you can only rely on everything you've learned and on your experience up to a certain point...practice is necessary.

and if he said he could practice hard for a couple months and be able to win the U.S. Open then i think he's delusional. yes he's a great player and if he practiced hard for months he could definitely be in contention, but to simply state that you can practice hard for a few months and beat absolutely everyone else is just stupid. that comment gives no credit to other players and least of all to the reigning champ SVB. SVB has played everyday since he was what? 5 years old? to say u will definitely beat someone like that with just a couple months of practice is insulting and downright retarded...but then again sigel does like to talk himself up.
 
I'll still take Efren in any game that Mike wants to play. I honestly think with a month or two of practice he could take Mike in straight pool. Wouldnt be the first time I was wrong though.:p
 
You got a Seasoned veteran vs. a retired pool player. Hard to put your money on the 2nd choice. Especially when your up against Reyes.
