Current top 10 cue builders still taking orders?

IMO Tascarella is a top cuemaker and I was thinking his delivery was pretty good.

Probably the best bet for a top maker to get a cue fairly quickly.

Ken

I’d prefer names that can deliver a cue within say 1 year, if that’s not too fast.

List down who's in your top 10.

The Tascarellas and I think The Benders are still taking orders.

Good luck on:

Barry
Dennis
Bill Schick
Thomas Wayne
Tony S
Bob M

In the end, maybe Pete Tonkin, Andy Gilbert,

Ordering a cue from one of the "top ten" or "top tier" makers is ordering something custom from an artist and it is a different process than buying a semi-custom or a fancy production cue.

I always love the, 'the cuemaker is an artist' crap thrown out there. Very few of even the top cuemakers really have much design education. Their designs are either weak or based on styles set over the last 50-80 years.

The comparison to an artist as an excuse for taking longer than expected, is also BS. Real artists often work under strict deadlines. Authors, poets, painters and graphic designers have to meet deadlines all the time. Authors and poets have publishing deadlines. Painters and sculptors have gallery openings or events that much of their commissioned art is made for. Jewelers have deadlines--who would be happy about commissioning a piece for his wife's birthday and being told that it would be ready three months late?

The fact of the matter is that the flaky pool world puts up with flaky cue makers and table mechanics, and that breeds, well, flaky cuemakers and flaky table mechanics.

You'd be remiss if you did not include Bob Owen in your list of ten (10) custom cue-makers.

Aside from being as talented as any other cue-maker, few could match his open, friendly style.

But the most imprtant thing is there's no complaints about Bob Owen and cues are completed on time.

Let's see......extremely price competitive, very friendly, great communications, flawless cue designs
and execution, long standing record of customer satisfaction & custom cues are completed on time.
Hmn, seems like Bob Owen should rank pretty high up on your final list of ten cue-makers.......JMO.

However, I'm somewhat prejudiced since I had Bob build me a couple of customs before the ivory ban
started in California otherwise he'd be making me another cue now. Here's my last cue Bob completed
Memorial Day 2016. I asked Bob to sign as April 24th since it's my oldest daughter's birthday. Several
of my cues are dated that way......both of my Jerry Rauenzahn cues and both of my Owen custom cues.

If Jerry Rauenzahn was still active, he'd be another recommendation I'd offer but alas, that's no longer the case.

Black Boar from what I read on the internet (ha ha ha) will have a cue in your hand in about half a year. You will of course pay a lot for it.

re: Frey
My understanding is that his lathes are down and he's waiting for repairs.

Uh oh
Do you mind if I ask about this info? I haven't heard about this ...

Lomax makes great cues. I have several and they are among my best playing cues. Steve is also a 100% solid good guy. Fun to deal with and stands behind his work.

Any opinions on Cohen?

I have two 2 Cohen cues (gave one to my son as a gift) and he is making me two more fancier cues as we speak. I really like the way they play (crisp/hard hit) and they are well made.
