Custom Davis/Prince Full-Spliced Hickory Burl and Ebony

First and foremost, I have to thank Mr. Eric Crisp of Sugartree cues (AZ name qbilder) for supplying the beautiful piece of hickory burl, which came from a tree that he painstakingly harvested himself. Without his generosity, this cue would have never been conceived, and I am more than honored to have the chance to play with a cue made of this amazing wood. Eric, I owe you a beer at least!

Here's how this build started. I contacted John Davis in Chicago, the full-splice blank master himself, and inquired on having a cue made. He was very kind and easy to speak to. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but we got to talking and he said he could get just about any wood imaginable and, due to his collaboration with Tim Prince, he said that just about any design was possible. This made me think of a hickory burl cue that I saw on here, made by Jeff Olney for bnall. So, taking his "any wood" claim as a challenge, I asked him if he could get some hickory burl. And he made it happen!

When he called me a couple months later and told me he received a piece of hickory burl from Eric, I was pretty excited. After a bunch of pondering, we decided on a classic design, four hickory burl points into an ebony forearm with black/natural/black/natural veneers, which is undoubtedly my favorite veneer color combo. The butt sleeve will be a beautiful piece of hickory burl, which will feature four ebony windows with matching veneers. We also came up with a fairly unique ivory inlay pattern for these windows, but you'll just have to wait and see that!

This thread will be updated as they continue to send me pictures of the progress. I have to say, John Davis and Tim Prince have been awesome guys to work with. I pretty much gave John what I thought was an impossible task and he treated it like it was a walk in the park.

If you want some top notch craftmanship made in the heart of the USA, you should get in touch with John Davis and/or Tim Prince.

And now, some cue porn for your pleasure...

I'm a diehard fan of Hickory Burl...i think it's the most beautiful mood/material ever brought to the face of this earth!! Im sure this cue would turn out amazing!!

I notice that the tip of the hickory point is short of missing in one of the points? How is that going to be fixed?
Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question...don't know much about cue building...

The blank is way oversize at this point "probably better than an inch at the joint" Most all FS blanks have this at this point in their life. The smaller the diameter gets, the point wood will start to lose its natural square top. John likely made this initial cut and is letting it hang out and stabilize for a while before taking it down.

Update #1

Received an update from Tim a couple days ago. Looks like the forearm has been turned down a few times, the points are starting to look real sharp. The cue is really coming along nicely and the burl wood has great figure to it. Next up is the butt sleeve, which also appears to have been turned down since the last pics. Tim said it will be bored out, assemble the trim rings, and start on the veneered boxes. This should be pretty special when finished! Enjoy the pics, all comments appreciated

Update #2

I was excited to see another update from Tim in my inbox last night! The butt sleeve with matching rings has been glued up, and veneered windows have been assembled. I am very impressed with the craftsmanship. I can't wait to see how much this hickory burl pops after some clear coats! I will let the pics do the talking...
