Dale Perry Cues

I have seen hundreds of Dale Perry Cues for sale, both from his website, and MANY from private sellers. While his cues seem attractive, they are each marked "One of a Kind", when they all look alike, with the exception of woods used.
I have seen a few up close, but must confess that I have never shot with any of his cues. So.... I am asking players that know, what is the rap on these cues? Retail prices = $1700. Most sell for about $275.00.

I have seen a few indirect comments made on the SALE forum, so I'm confused. Someone please fill me in.
Thanks.

Im also curious about this. I hate to admit it but Ive been following what I see online without basing my opinions on my experiences. (other than I hate mucci's)

I play a Joss, its a good player cue but I recently ordered a custom because I didnt like the colour of my player.

Do a search for Dale Perry and you'll get all the information and more that you ever wanted. It boils down to 'guy is a ***** for underselling his dealers' and/or they are the best hitting under $200 cue. Pick your side of the fence...

I bought one from him and don't care for it. Also tried to sell it, no takers. I don't like the quality of the shafts. They seem to have a very open grain filled with sealer. There is a reason many are for sale!!

I just bought a Dale Perry

I grew up in the town where Dale makes cues. I was back here for family business and I wanted a cue so I went by his shop. I bought one that was finished ready for eBay. I paid the same as eBay prices but saved on shipping but had to pay local tax. This is a good hitting cue. I own an old Joss, I've had a couple of Joss Wests, I play with Mike Michael's cues in Santa Monica. I know Ed Prewitt and been to his shop. I've also hit with TAD cues. This cue is a really good deal. China prices but made in the USA. Dale's shop hasn't changed much in the last 10 years. He just decided to make a cue that he could sell rapidly so unlike other cues with 'investment potential' this cue will stay low because of his volume output. There is still a lot of hand work in it so he can't make millions of them but he has a production line.

Well I bought 3 of them, one for a gift. I play and break with my two and they've held up well. Dale under selling his dealers has nothing to do with how good his cues are...get over it. Johnnyt

Johnny - I didnt mean to insinuate that it did. Just that is what all the threads boil down to. I owned one of his cues and thought it played just fine. Though, in the end, I traded it for an OB shaft.

The problem is he use to be proud of what he sold, now he just does it to make money. The cues are not bad but you can get a custom for a few bucks more right on AZ.I wouldn't trust his wood anymore. But hey what do i know?

Thanks for the responses guys! Keep them coming. This is what a forum is for, and this is why I asked. I'm not belittling his work either. I am just trying to get an "Accross the Board" reaction.

Simple...nice looking cues, horrible resale value, very suspect customer service (from experience with my girlfriends DP cue). Once he moved his cues to ebay it kind of started an issue on the value of his cues...

I didn't take it that way at all. There are too many threads knocking this guy IMO. Johnnyt

Love Mine

I have one I gave a customer $350.00 worth of table time for, I love this cue , I also use a 314-2 Shaft. It plays great and looks very nice. JMOP

Let me say this. Dale started out with much more expensive cues that he would wholesale to dealers. He bought a lot of high dollar equipment and although this greatly increased his production, it didn't increase his sales and now he had a lot of expensive equipment to pay for. At the end of the month when the bills came in he would dump some on e-bay to get some cash flow. This obviously put his dealers at a distinct disadvantage and the previous purchasers who paid top dollar soon saw their cues really drop in price so he got on many peoples $hit list. Most of his early cues are very nice.

Now we come to the present. His after sale customer relations aren't that great and for the most part, there is no great resale value but "So what?" The cues may have a little cosmetic flaw somewhere but for the most part they don't. My question is: where else in this country can you get an American built cue that has the inlays, the fit, the durability and the quality of his cues for anywhere near his price? Most imported cues cost more and aren't one tenth the cue that he builds. Most cue makers in this country take a plain house cue, cut it, make a shaft and a cheap finish and ask twice what he is getting for his cues. Now I'm a cue maker so probably it's not in my best interest to say this but in my opinion, anyone who is looking for a good dependable player would be crazy to purchase anything else.

In my opinion, Dale's cues have not kept up with current trends in custom cues and they are only worth what he is selling them for. I also think they are tired designs that he's overcooked at this point.

If that's the cue you can afford, that's fine. Consider a McDermott, or a Pechauer, or a Viking or a Dale Perry.

But if you're only buying one because you think they are a good deal and can afford to spend a few hundred more, consider an entry level custom that sells for a few hundred more. A bunch of makers come to mind that I think are twice the cue for only a little more money. Play with them and compare them side to side, you might find yourself agreeing with this.

I bought one on E-bay about 8 months ago for $175 because I liked the looks of the cue. It has not been a disappointment. In my opinion (I'm not an expert) the quality is good and it plays very well. It has a nice balance. Now I have a McDermott and a Dale Perry - I like both. I think it's very fashionable on this forum to knock Dale Perry. Probably only a small percentage of the people that knock him even own or played with a Dale Perry cue. Monkey see, monkey do.

For the money his cues play very well, and don't look half bad.
A friend of mine purchased a OB shaft for his, and it made quite a difference (for the better). Don't get me wrong I have played with better cues in respect to playability and looks, but for the money, and made in the U.S.! It's a very nice cue.

For the OP, there is your answer. His cues used to cost a lot more until he started to produce more cues and put them on ebay. Some people got stuck financially because of that business decision.

I've never played with one but a lot of people say they play good for the price.

And if you are willing to spend a little more I hear Mr Neighbor's cues are very good.
