Dale Perry Cues

I'm sorry if I sound like a newbie, but I'm from the midwest. I see a ton of Dale Perry cues online going for next to nothing. They look to be a pretty decent cue. What am I missing? Is he a production guy or an importer or what? He makes pretty cues but I'm leary of buying one because they don't go for anything online and I'm worried about something I don't know.

I would'nt buy one, but thats my opnion. I owned one and it play like crap. So I got what I paid for a cheap price, and cheap hitting cue. Lesson learned.

Dale Perry is a serious cuemaker i.m.o.. Of course he is not doing top-quality for that prices, but you`ll get a custom with a lot design and an average-nice playability for a really cheap-price.
I would not buy those Perrys, if i´m looking for a realy strong player or a realy good pice of craftmanship, but if i´m looking for something avarage for a good price, its a suggestion. I have about 5 dozen cues. One of them is a DP for less money. It plays ok.

That is kinda what I'm worried about. A nice looking cue that doesn't hit for anything. I just naturally worry about any cue that has flooded Ebay. I am very partial to rosewood, which makes me even more vulnerable to his prices. But I know I'm missing something. Even my local cuemakers that are brand new to the game charge more for a cue than what his are going for. I appreciate the beauty of his cues but I wouldn't mind hitting one before I bought one.

It seems now that I would pay a cheap price and end up with a cue that wouldn't hit as well as a Viking or McDermott for a similar price.

I am the first guy to appreciate home grown custom cues,(I've bought a few) but I dont want to be taken for a sucker.

That is a good suggestion. I have a couple really nice customs that I am leary of taking to the bar for league or tourneys. I've been playing with some decent productions with ld shafts. But I wouldn't mind a low cost custom. Is the DP it? The closest I've done now is a local guy that made me a brand new player and a separate break. I love supporting custom cuemakers but I don't want to be taken.

IMO you would be better off with a joss or schon cue
Dale Perry's cues are ok but the resale stinks on them

I just had a dale perry from ebay. I thought it hit really well and the finish and wood was great. What I didn't like though was the auction says he will custom taper it for free, so after the auction I asked him to turn it down to 12.75mm and change the weight, he never responded and I received his standard taper with a 13mm tip and it was 1/2oz lite. But even with all this the cue played well. The taper is a little funny though also it is more like a euro taper than a pro taper. For the price I paid ($121+shipping) I thought it was well worth it, but it just wasn't what I asked for so I put it back on ebay and got $120 for it. I would order another one but I would get his radial shaft instead, I hear they are tapered correctly. Do a search here for dale perry and you'll find many different opinions.

DP cues are ok. These days they are getting less expensive, seems you can pick them up for around 100 bucks where as a few years ago you were seeing between 200 and 400. I was lucky myself. I bought one, kept it two years and sold it on ebay for more than I paid for it. I agree with the poster who said buy a Schon or a Joss. Might even suggest a Viking or McDermott if you want a production cue. Me personally I'd watch the customs here on AZB and get one of them, not much difference in price these days.

I have to agree again with the Joss / Schon suggestion. Both are solid players and the price is directly proportionate to the appearance- they each play the same (save for the Dan Janes one-offs, which are a different animal).

And also the for sale section here- I personally have a beautiful looking and playing Rick Howard that is a break/jump design, but not his standard MACE cue. It was also owned by a known player when it was new. And it is VERY attractively priced... There are many others as well. If you think you might be able to tolerate a DP, you can definitely acquire a very fine cue that will appreciate, rather than depreciate over time. That's certainly a good thing...

PS check out the auction in my signature link below! You could get a collectable Joss cue for only $12.00!!!

OK...I will go on the other side of the fence on this one.

Most of Dale's issues are based on dealer practices in the past rather than his cuemaking ability. He used to make great cues that sold for well over $1k. Then he decided to do direct-marketing on Ebay, and undercut his loyal dealers. The result is what you see now....cues with a value in the $100-200 range.

If you don't have a lot of money to invest, pick up a DP on Ebay for the $100-200 and put your favorite tip on it. It will serve you just fine, and you won't lose much money on it if you ever decide to sell it. If you are looking for an "investment" cue in the hopes that you will make some money on it when you sell it, get something else.

Every cue sold is not intended to be an "investment". If you see one you want to play with, pick it up.

I agree, a McDermott or schon is a great cue for the money. Also I see you are in OK. Maybe look into a simple player from Chad of CAM cues. I believe he is in OK? Maybe you could go to his shopand he can hook you up?

dale perry cues are the best bang for the buck period.he uses quality wood and they play great.i own several as well as schons, joss, mcdermotts etc.its all a personel thing on what kind of hit you like

Yes, the taper is more like a euro. I have a very handsome rosewood Dale Perry that I fitted with a McDermott I-3. Wow, plays absolutely great. Wonderful balance with geometric precision. I really like it.

I got a DP on ebay a few months ago and I love the hit. If you search the forums for him, you'll find out why a lot of people don't like him though. Doesn't have to do with the playability of his cues but rather his business model.

I got one off ebay a few months back. It plays great and looks great. It came (shaft size), exactly as I asked for. A very good cue for the money.

I agree with Bamacues, not best investment, but definitely a good player for the money.
Wood quality is good, I bought one a few years back, and still have it.
Only complaint is shaft taper, it's too fat, I had to replace the shaft, but that's just my personal preference.

But if you have the money, go for a real custom cue.

Buy one, you won't be sorry. By the way he claims to to use bone IVORY in his cues. There is no such thing. It's either bone or it's Ivory. He does not use any Ivory in the making of his cues...JER

I realy think they`re worth their money and a little more. Like i wrote before, you will not get a Top-Cue, but a nice player it will be. I.m.o. its much better than McDermotts or Vikings. Maybe not better than a Joss or a Schön, but they will cost even a little more. Try to buy a new Fourpoint-Schön for 200 bucks... LOL Try one and if you don`t like it, sell it. You will not loose much money.

Hi there,

I bought my DP from eBay almost two months ago. I could not be happier with it's playability. The fit and finish is very nice and my cue gives a medium+ hit. Not quite as firm of a hit as I personally prefer, but still a solid hitting cue. It does what I tell it to though...

Like others have said, you cannot go wrong for the money. I've owned and played with many different cues (including Viking and McDermott) and it honestly hits just as well. I actually like it better than the McDermott that I had, but hey I also think a Meucci is a nice hitting cue

Dale tapered the shafts to my request and adjusted the weight as well. He was responsive via e-mail and also fine to talk to on the phone.

The only negative I have to say is that the ferrules for my shafts were not glued when I received them. I had that done locally after I found out. No other issues after at least 60 hours of play time on the cue and two shafts.

I did not buy my DP as an investment. I bought it because I had stepped away from the sport for a while and needed a good/affordable player to use while seeing where I wanted to go with the hobby again.

Whatever you choose, Good Luck!-

J.

I picked up one on eBay to see what the fuss was about. I've played with it and have let many other people play with it. They all say it plays great! It probably won't go up much in value, but you'll probably get what you bought it for or close to it if you're going to sell it.
