Danny Medina robbed in Vegas.

That's one thing that happened in Vegas that I'm glad didn't stay there. Sounds like they have a serious problem brewing. Thanks for the warning.

wow

Freemont street at 11pm should be packed any day of the week. Im surprised nobody jumped in to lend him a helping hand....Ron

I spoke with Danny this morning. He can hardly talk. The police did make a report. There are security cameras in the area, but the hotels are reluctant to let anyone view the tapes. I would think they would have to show them to the police.
After the weekend I'm going to get the report number from Danny and call the police myself to see what's being done.
Danny is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, the same day the Pro Tour Championships start. I told him that if he wants to play, I think Charlie would work with him to schedule a Wed. match.

How can they be RELUCTANT that is evidence to a crime...Ron

Watch bumfights sometime. There are two pretty hardcore scenes from Vegas.

If I recall all of the Bumfight was filmed in and around SIN CITY, (aka Vegas0 the part of the city the Chamber of Commerce is not wanting you to know about.

One of the main cons of street people is to ask if you have change or to ask directions .as this happens another person will be behind you ready to club or strangle you..if you are approached DO NOT STOP look behind you to see that 2nd person and get out of there ..great tip by Donovan NEVER flash a roll of bills.another truth things were safer for people when the mob controled it..just thank the ACLU for all the freedoms they want EVERYONE to have regardless of what crime people commit..all Big casinos have hundreds of cameras protecting their property .cameras so sensitive they can read the serial number on a paper bill and tell the time off someone's watch..casino's will do all they can to protect their property.including hushing things.. perhaps it's time that a tv investigative reporter did a nice story about muggings there.then the Chamber of Commerce can put heat on the Police ect ect..however when all said and done the ACLU will try to undo any good that you try to do..i myself believe in the old Charles Bronson movies the Death Wish series.

Thanks, Jay, for reporting the disturbing circumstances in Vegas and for your unflagging support of the players. Hoping for a speedy recovery for Danny, who I've always found to be a really nice guy, and swift and sure punishment for the creeps that did this. Sounds like Vegas needs to get on the ball; 439 people viewed this thread and are having reservations about going to Vegas, particularly the Plaza. I know if I owned the Plaza and something like this happened in front of my joint (which it wouldn't cuz I would have made sure it was safe, even if I had to hire outside security people), Danny would have been "made right" with all hospital expenses and losses covered by me. I would recommend to the Vegas civic and business leaders the services of one Beau Dietl, who would blowtorch the scum right out of Vegas. We have similar incidents here in Orlando, but, trust me, the "street creeps" are kept under close wraps, plenty of cops are on the job, and our collective community consensus is to make sure visitors are as safe as humanly possible. We don't put up with muggers, they know it, and head out of town, if they're not already in the crossbar hotel. Want to gamble, come to Orlando, gamble on the great cruise ships and see Mickey in the same trip!

People don't really know what goes on around them much of the time. Some years ago I took up bike riding and for like a year almost never drove a car. You get a real feel of what it is like in a city on a bike rather then speeding by in your car with the windows up and the air and radio on. I was actually attacked several times and once knocked off the bike having to produce a gun to drive the guys off. Check out where you live

These are probably old numbers but give you an idea. Check out that crime figure.

I'm going to Vegas in May. Forgive me for being ignorant, but is downtown the strip? I'm guessing not. Is the strip generally safe or should we take cabs everywhere?

As others have said, downtown isn't the strip. Downtown is a lot worse, but don't get lulled to sleep on the strip. Fremont street east of downtown - the old highway coming from the dam, is one of the more depressing sights you can see. You know everything is going on in the rancid dumps that are there. Downtown I like to valet park and walk only on the main street at night. But that wouldn't have stopped what happened here, as it did happen in a public area. As to the strip, the north part of the strip getting closer to downtown sucks. The area around the stratosphere sucks and always has. Heard about a poker player robbbed near the monorail stop near there. But remember, greg raymer was robbed at gunpoint on his floor at the Bellagio. You have to get by a little security to get up to the rooms and it is a nice place, etc... The strip is OK, but not too long ago I got done playing poker at the mirtage at about 4:00 am and was walking to the IP with my wife. We saw a couple of violent confrontations, but they weren't robberies and didn't involve weapons.

I go to las vegas, and lived there for a short while, and like it and have never been a victim of crime there. However, some real lunatics are about. Do all you can in terms of general urban sensibility and the odds are you will be OK. But no guarantees.

Hope Danny comes out OK.

I feel bad for Danny, but he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sadly no place is safe any longer with the EXCEPTION maybe of Singapore where CRIMINALS get Swift Justice, and shall we say Anti Social Behavior get dealt with ASAP.

~~Yea baby!

Someone who knows these people should find out if there is anything we can do to help set them right again.....I'd be happy to lend a hand if I knew what I could do to help out....This is a tragedy........

Danny told me it was three blacks who jumped him, one with a hammer. He was hit initially on the left side of the jaw.

After falling to the ground and being robbed, NO ONE would help him. People walked around him and just looked at him. He had to get to his feet and walk into the nearest casino for assistance.

I agree with you that this is tragic. Life more often than not, is tough enough for a Pool Player without incidents like these.
My friendship with Danny goes back more than 30 years, and U just can't imagine how he feels at this time.
I just recieved a PM with his location and # and will call him at a later hour this morning and post further information. If we all pull together, I'm it would do wonders for his attitude.

I just spoke to Danny on the phone and he is good spirits (all things considered).
He is to have work doneon his jaw tuesday. His attiude is just amazing, but not surprsingly to me.
He did say that he is done with Las Vegas. Who can blame him for that.

When I posted above I forgot an in-law being the victim of a crime. Brother in law got in a bad accident and was in pretty bad shape at the otherwise excellent emergency room/ICU. They had his possessions at the desk and his wallet was stiolen. Kinda low to steal a wallet from a guy with a broken back, but somebody did. At one point one moron tried to accuse my sister and law and I of doing it and then blaming them. That was a new one. At least the doctors did a good job. But that is las vegas for you.
