Dark Efren

One time I saw Efren at the local poolhall, and I went up to him and told him I was a big fan. He smiled at me and told me to come closer. As I approached him, he kicked me in the nuts! HAHA LOL, I literally laughed for 5 min after I read this, LOL. So random, I love it!::D :D :D

This match lasted about a week I think and Earl is a complete ASS the whole time.

Actually Earl was good from about disc 2 - 6. At one point a customer even dropped and broke a glass while Earl was shooting. Earl simply got up, told the guy "don't worry about it, it wasn't your fault". He then sat patiently while the mess was cleaned up. got up and completed the run out. The commentators even commented "we have seen the kinder, gentler side of Earl the last two days". You are right that Efren stayed respectful the entire THREE days. However, if you watch his people (front table) the same can not be said, for them (It was his sponsor and manager)

Now that was really nice of Earl. It changes my whole opinion of the guy. Although actually, in hindsight, I notice that Earl has always been nice to Efren. Maybe it's because Efren doesn't react to his antics.....

Couldn't resist that last sentence, could you? Maybe he simply has a lot of respect for Efren!! Since we are stating "maybe's"

Efren, I am your father. join me in the darkside and together we will rule the galaxy ! <<< this proves that Efren is not from this planet. he's a freakin ALIEN ! :D

I've heard about Efren getting pissed at Corey. Efren was playing chess with a certain fella when Corey butted in asking Efren to play a money game of pool with him. Efren was likely enjoying the game but Corey kept on disturbing him. even commented something like it's not worth the money playing chess of some sort. I guess that particular comment of Corey blew the lights out of Efren and said something ain't nice to Corey. I like Corey but I guess that was not the right time to disturb Efren. I for one, would also be pissed if I'm watching my favorite show on tv then suddenly somebody would butt in and change the channel! :D

Really. You too!

I played chess with Efren and I was beating him so bad that it made him look like an amateur. finally he got fed up losing so many times, he looked at me straight in the eye and pointed something at me and said "this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?"

Efren Sharking...

This is game 8 at the IPT finals.

Watch Efren at the 3 minute mark after he gets done screwing his cue together. He bumps the cue behind him and makes a loud noise that Rodney has to go and get a sip of his water. Then at the 3:45 minute mark, Efren is in Rodney's line of sight so Efren decides he wants to look at the score sheet and makes a move towards the paper and then returns it to the table with a fast hand movement.

Still damn funny- almost a year later. Bad rep for you.

At One Side Billiards Café a customer had ordered chicken wings, and when the waitress walked over with it she had to pass Efren who played a match, but was in the chair at the moment. When she walked by he grabbed one of the chicken wings, and when he saw that we saw it he started to laugh and smile all over his face...

Guess that was the only "dark thing" I experienced ;)

Hahaha! All very good (and some funny) posts! I guess he really is a nice guy, after all. I wonder if he was the same during his younger days and just softened up with age. I can just imagine some filipino old-timer recounting how during his heyday, efren would pull every trick in the book to win. hehe
It seems also that Efren likes to win and hates to lose just as much as anyone. So I guess to the people who say that Earl is justified when he's being difficult because he just hates to lose so much can't use that excuse.
BTW, I watched the video with Grady and you guys are right, it didn't seem like sharking to me, too. But wouldn't it be a hoot to know that efren isn't above that sort of thing? :)

Efren has always been pretty laid back and low key even during his younger years. We used to play during the 70's at Lucky 13 when I was still on college. Me and my friends used to go to the pool halls after school, and of course, Efren would be there either playing with somebody or practicing or doing pula't puti (a game of chance where you sit around a table where the center is abruptly recessed and there would be rows of alternating squares of red and white squares. Suspended above the table,
is a metal funnel where the dealer throws in two pingpong balls; you place your bet on either red or white square, hence, pula't puti!)

Anyways, going back to pool, we played for years and we never had any discussion or altercation of any sort. He took his lossses as well as his winnings, which is more, of course, the same way. I would state unequivocally, that he was shooting a lot better during those years because at that time, the only person that I saw using a two-piece cue were the old rich retirees hanging out in the pool hall. Me, Efren, and everybody else were using houe cues, and it never bothered us. He was totally unassuming and quiet that it was really hard for anybody to get mad at him. The only time that he got excited about pool was when he played Boy Quiapo, the local hustler in the Quiapo district. He offered Boy Quiapo a handicap, but he loudly refused and stated that he was going to kick his ass in the table. Efren's demeanor changed dramatically, from nonchalance to no nonsense. He stated that he will "retire" Boy Quiapo from pool after he's done playing him. The other guy had to accept the challenge because Efren was saying it loud enough for everyboy to hear.

Back then, your word is your bond especially in the pool halls. Efren beat him up so bad, it was ridiculous. That was one of his best games that I remember!! The other guy never even came close to threaten Efren's game. After the match, we never saw Boy Quiapo again. He was 'OFFICIALLY RETIRED!!' courtesy of Efren Bata!!

Efren said that he got insulted when the guy throw his offer of a spot back to his face. That was only time that I saw him got a little pissed off against somebody, and he made him pay for it big time!!

I saw that video. Grady was down studying a shot facing 10 o'clock of the screen and Efren was at 12 o'clock. When Grady suddenly changed his mind and faced towards Efren's direction. At this instance Efren just stood real still until Grady told him about standing in his line of sight. Who's sharking who?

I use to see him get real upset when a fellow Filipino beats him, I guess that's considered as lack of heirarchial respect here. He won't talk to the guy and even not acknowledge the guy's presence for days. But that was a few years ago.

Edwin, did you win a tournament recently or play extremely well at a tournament recently, if so which one?
thanks,

Hail Mary, I was on Efren's one yard line when Corey was asking Efren repeatedly to play some pool. Efren was beating on that poor chess player like a drum and it was for $10. Efren faked minor irritation but it was only to get Corey to bet it up. At no time was Efren genuinely pissed at Corey for "interrupting" his chess match. All the while, Corey was being very respectful to Efren.

FTR, Efren didn't need to concentrate on which move to make next because his chess opponent didn't have the tools to make a game of it unfortunately, but Efren didn't make light of him either.

Yeah Efen is a classy guy and Corey is top shelf too.

Arm9Baller, you get much rep for this bit of sleuthing on Efren sharking. I could not hear the audio so I couldn't be sure of the sharking noise but saw that something disturbed Rodney and he stopped.

But the second bit of sharking at 3:45 is quite evident. Efren did shark his opponent on the second time around with the quick hand movement but especially with the "flashing" white score sheet. I wouldn't have believed it if you hadn't brought it to my attention.

This sharking only reaffirms my opinion that we are all human and all of us are capable of poor behavior at times as well as great acts of sportsmanship. It is said that it is far easier for a rich man to be gracious with his money than it is for a poor man to be likewise.

REP to you.

Alas, Efren is only human.

Woe to the pool world and woe to the world in general. :( :( :D :D
JoeyA

p.s. Were you there at the match?

I'm breaking away from the Efren Religion. all this time I believed that he's the pool god. I see that he's a mere human ! :D

JoeyA, did you watch the replay sequence of that 3:45 shot? the top view replay, notice how the OB went offline which Rodney didn't expect to happen. notice how he looked and wondered what happened. ;)

You have to put Nick Varner up there, and he can go anywhere from 1-3 among those other two distinguished gentlemen.
