Not so much a gambler. At least not yet. He looked nervous. He got Shane's B game and couldn't fade it or the score would have been worse.

He didn't put 3 degrees of heat on Shane.

One of the best tournament players in the world, but not ready for prime time gambling.

This match was the same as a tourney they didn't bet anything
 
He also lost to Batram in previous tar match, when he was giving the 8. That match the long race format got to him. I've heard he is actually a very good money player though in general. He just played bad tonight, frustrated early by shane's break and his scratches on the break. Never got anything going. . .
 
He's not a great gambler because he's down one set against the best player in America on tighter Diamond pockets?

He went to The Phillippines and came back THOUSANDS up playing de Luna, Gabica, Corteza, etc.

Anyone who travels the seas looking to match up with the greatest talent on this planet AND comes back up has a ton of gamble.

Things to consider

Daz got back from China 2 days ago (it was delayed a day).

Daz just moved.

Has he played a match on the TAR table?

SVB spent 2 weeks fishing at home before (winning) Turning Stone.

Not making excuses for anyone, just thinking these things could have been a factor.

Guessing you weren't at the Challenge of Champions.

In terms of financial swing between winning and losing, the biggest match either Shane or Darren faced in 2012 was at Mohegan Sun in the final of the Challenge of Champions, with winner getting $25,000 and loser getting nothing. Darren whitewashed Shane in that one by a total rack score of 10-1 and took home the $25,000 prize. That was only a couple of months ago.

A bit silly to dismiss Darren's pedigree when the heat is turned up highest when he beat Shane to a pulp when the pressure was far greater than it is in TAR 30.

I didn't know that. I've just watched him iboth TAR matches and he looked pretty tentative in both. We'll see if he can pick it up.

That's still an event when he stood to lose how much out of his pocket if he lost? Just wondering.
That event was on complete buckets, with cloth sliding everywhere as well.

Seems some that don't ever get in the box for a dime or 5-10 dimes, don't understand the difference between GAMBLING, a TOURNEY, and a FREEROLL.

I think the point here is that both play well enough to dominate the other on the right night. And, of course, the TAR studio table really does give Shane a home court advantage.

Best is to give credit to both of these worldbeaters and congratulate Shane on winning the first leg of TAR 30.

Not that big of deal...Daz winning on ESPN registers a blip on the
radar unlike this TAR..

You do know that only one of these two combatants live in Las Vegas (and it ain't the S Dakota Kid). Albeit, he's probably only had his head on a pillow in his new digs for @ 4 nights. ;)

If any readers here saw the podcast, Daz is rather stoked @ having just moved there.

I expect them to settle in a bit better tomorrow. AtLarge - Mr Stats - will possibly prove that in black and white :smile: . Granted, it is not a world title on the line. But these two icons of the game DO care @ this match. We can all specualte as to the importance they place upon this. But... It's not in their make-up to sleep walk through what some may want to call a free roll. They're champions in their prime - stand up gents I believe these two to be.

Doesn't winner get multiple times amount the $$$ than the loser? Ain't no chopping going on here.

Daz looked off balance all night to me. I think those early scratches on the break tilted him a little and he confirmed that when I talked to him after the match. I dont think he ever really got his feet under him the rest of the night.

IMO it was a really weird set all the way around. By that I mean neither guy really looked comfortable for any length of time. I look for tomorrow to be a different story with more consistent play from both guys and I expect Daz to be dialed in. He is a stone champion by any measure and he will not want to go out like he did tonight.

As for the gambling/exhibition/free roll question about how much guys care or dont. I talked about this during the match tonight and since we have started doing the prize fund format two matches have almost came to blows where in about five years of action matches it only ever got somewhat heated once.

I'm not saying the new format is the same as gambling because it isnt but if a guy is staked 100% and loses no personal money on a loss is that really gambling? In the end at this level with this caliber of player its as much about pride as it is the money. Believe it or dont but thats my experience.

I don't know if it would ever be possible, but I would love to see a "high stakes" tournament on TAR with Shane, Alex, Daz, Dennis, Francisco, Dechaine, Archer, and one other player.

Each player puts up $5,000 or $10,000. 10 ball, races to 25, single elimination. You could do two matches Friday, two on Saturday, and the last three on Sunday. Winner take all. Of course, you'd have to start the matches earlier, but I'd imagine most would still pay for the stream.

Just wishful thinking.
