Darren Appleton is a great tournament player, but...

Appleton played Morris 2 years ago at sbe beats him for 6000. So know svb will sure Enuf beat him ...

All I'm saying is, most players get backed 100% and risk nothing. Doesn't mean they don't take the heat. They are still trying to get paid and will fight hard for it. Even in the finals of a tourny or this format, there is a $2000 swing. You're not losing your rent money but you sure want to get the cash. It's not like they are playing for funzies.

I agree, it's hard to dismiss the fact that players wouldn't feel any pressure playing in a finals of a tournament, especially when you add in the fact this is how they provide there living.

I'd be curious to hear how Darren felt playing in the finals of the Challenge of Champions knowing he was playing for 50,33,25% of his annual tournament income.

I didn't know that. I've just watched him iboth TAR matches and he looked pretty tentative in both. We'll see if he can pick it up.

Chris:

Unfortunately, this is a case of the "what have you done for me, lately" notion that a lot of us pool fans have.

I think it's a mistake to dismiss Daz so early. He's a very proud person (obvious in the previous TAR broadcast interview), and doesn't take any loss lightly. Don't forget, Daz is well aware this match is recorded and will essentially be available / viewable forever. It's not like some backroom match not being recorded where any testimony of the match is only hearsay.

I would say, wait and watch. I think he's going to step it up.

I'm confused

Some posts have tagged this match an exhibition. That means to me that each player gets the same payday regardless of outcome.

I thought prior TAR matches paid the winner more than the loser. That the loser gets expenses - ie. breakeven. The winner gets like $4-5K.

???

It's the same deal here, I think. 1k loser 4k winner, or something similar to that.

I think those calling it a winner are comparing it to older TAR matches where players bet their own or were backed.

No one, and I mean *no one,* plays at their highest level all the time. And the reasons for that most frequently have little to do with the format. Everyone's game ebbs and flows. Pool is a tough game even for the best.

What was the final score i couldnt finish watching last night got busy.

25-17 SVB

Was tied at 6, and then.... 12-6 SVB. Then SVB dogged/hung a 9 ball and Daz closed the gap at the halfway break to 14-11. They came back from @ a 20 minute break and Daz just couldn't find his game; dogging the first game. The outcome after that didn't seem to be much in doubt after that.

Pretty sloppy play by their standards and by their own admission. Still some darn good play in spots. Some very questionable overly offensive shots (on that b1tch of a tight table). Shane tried aggressive jumps and masse's that made me scratch my head.

But you could see Shane's break getting better and better. While Daz's whitey lost 6 inches of altitude a bit too often.

These formats I don't think suits SVB well either. He has lost the last 3 TAR matches, since it went into the exhibition style, correct? And he did not play well last night.

Make him put something on the line or play for someone putting it up and the beast comes out of that kid. In those long sets, to 100, I don't think there is a human alive that stands a chance in 10 ball. In all other games (8,9,Ball, Banks, One Pocket, Str8 pool) yes they got a shot. But 10 Ball oh, no.

Shane tried to bet on this set. Darren tried to get staked on the side for this set and nothing came together for whatever reasons.

Shane has bet on the sets he has lost in the past.

Don't let not having any idea what you are talking about slow you down though.

Honestly I am sick of all the "But it aint gambling". Guess what folks most gambling in pool aint gambling. Last I looked I don't see people talking about MMA fighters fighting for the same money these guys are playing for not fighting as hard as if they were betting their own. If you would rather watch two shortstops play $50 sets for their rent money then it shouldnt be too hard to find some to sweat.

Agree with this post. If people think players like Daz and SVB take a game like this any differently because they have a few grand of their own/a stake horse's money on the table, I think they're sorely mistaken.

In my opinion, they both looked like they bet the farm!

Not everybody plays the same. someone has to win. Shane is just better at pool.

Some people like to say the top players all play the same and on any given day anyone can win. It's simply not true. Somebody has to win and it's usually the better player.

Earl, Alcano, Kiamco, Niels, Hohmann, Raj, Shuff and Hatch....

What is this list of???? Bunch of champions right???

Based on AZ money list, none of the above players cashed for over 5k in 2012... I'm sure their list isn't 100% accurate.... This is excluding mosconi or anything else that is not singles...

This is just to put things into perspective... There really is NO money in this game... Winner of TAR gets 4k correct??? Some people don't think players won't get up for that or give it their best game... These two true professionals would try to shoot each other's nutz off for a nacho bell grande let alone 4k...

I was surprised by Daz with how honest he was on the podcast when he spoke of playing shane... Said he didn't want any of shane in 10 ball last few years and that he didn't think he could fade his break... Pretty strong for a world champion to come out and say that... Tell me that it doesn't matter to daz to get up and beat shane, regardless of purse, title, etc...

On AZB, there's no such thing as an off night.

Everyone has to fall into these neat little pigeonholes. Either a guy is a GAMBLER or he's a tournament player. He's either great under pressure or a DOG. He's either a filipino, shane, or he's a nobody. They're either betting their own, or it's a meaningless exhibition and the players aren't really trying.

It's all horseshit... These guys play at nearly the exact same speed, and have proven multiple times they can play under extreme pressure. After a thousand racks, one guy might have a 1 or 2% lead on the other, but nobody's paying close enough attention to say for sure which one.

And yet plenty of guys will talk as if a race to 25 is a foregone conclusion, and they boldly proclaim the window is open for anyone who thinks _______ can win. Then if their favorite wins the short race they go on AZ and tell everyone "see, I knew _______ had no shot. It was obvious."
