Take boxing for example. AT LEAST as much concentration/precision is required to box as play pool and yet people are yelling and screeming constantly.

So I say, let the fans be fans...which means FANATIC...be fans and get some EXCITEMENT into a sport that is almost totally devoid of it.

Other than having to compete with the NFL/NHL/MLB/NBA and golf for viewer attention...which is a MASSIVE problem for pool...the fact that pool is boring to watch, even for active pool players let alone the fans, is the answer to all questions relating to pool's lack of popularity.
(-:

You can't use those other sport as an example. Pool is a much more intimate setting. The crowd is RIGHT THERE! I use to fight full contact karate matches (in a boxing ring) and I can tell you, you can't really hear the crowd. You hear a constant loud roar, you can not make out want is being said. All you can really hear is the corner men. Same in any arena or stadium venue sport. And all of that moving and waving behind the hoop in basketball? A friend of mine played for the Knicks, and I once asked him if that bothers players. He said it actually HELPS, because the rim is the only thing NOT moving and your mind focuses on the stillness.

Look, you don't understand football, so don't try drawing an analogy to it. It's not a sport. It's a way of life. It's a shared cultural heritage. It's how people all around the world identify themselves in a way no other sport comes close to, and you clearly don't understand because you're not part of it. Despite the massive Irish immigrant populations and travelling support from both sides of the divide, not one drop of Northern Ireland's 'troubles' leaked over into Liverpool or Glasgow in all that time. Football rivalries left no room for mere sectarian terrorism. And can you name another sport where a disputed penalty award ended up in war between two sovereign nations?

Boro, you're a nut.

What is all this rubbish about the Brits loving their football
more than good old red blooded Americans.

Just answer me this one single question?

How many football stars have you let murder thier wives
and walk away scott free? Well....how many?

Now that's loyality buster.

You're welcome to review the video Jam posted. Can you point to any instance where the supporters were anything else but on their best behaviour during the actual play?
You misunderstood my post, I wasn't posting in response to the video. I was posting in response to the previous posters statement that quiet should not be required during the actual play. I agree that the fans were respectful during the actual play.
Also I see nothing wrong with the behaviour, though I do think it is kind of silly and sophomorish. BTW, I feel that way about all the fans (American or otherwise) in all the sports, they just get to worked up about it. Must be my Yankee reserve, we people of old Yankee stock (Pilgrims) just can't quite shake loose of that puritan reserve. :D
I can't. I can't see that it makes a blind bit of difference how much noise they make once the stroke has been played. What you won't find is any heckling, or, I suspect a retraction of that unfounded accusation forthcoming from Jam.

That may be true, but I can guarantee it's not true for me. I've played with a complete bunch of piss-takers for years. Only getting me to laugh ever works. I suspect if snooker was traditionally played before braying crowds instead of reverential quiet the standard would be just as high. It puts them off because they're not used to it. That obviously wouldn't be the case if they were used to it. You can't beat a truism.

I think we're basically in agreement on the video. The ony place I think we're in disagreement is on Earl's behaviour. I think it is very inappropriate, but no big deal, kind of comical actually. He is only hurting himself. You think it is even more inappropriate and a BIG deal. That's how I see the net result of posts made by each of us.
I'm sure you've heard of the Boston Red Sox baseball team. One of the best players on the team and one of the best hitters in the league is Manny Rameriz (sp?). He often does things we fans just can't fathom, we have a saying in Boston, "It is just Manny being Manny". Well, I guess I say "It is just Earl being Earl".

Do you have a personal vendetta with Earl?
Sounds like it from your constant Earl bashing.

I call it like I see it. If you want plain vanilla, look elsewhere.

I've played him twice. He beat me 11-3 in a 9-Ball tournament (The Music City Open) in 1985. And he bombed me in the Bank Pool division at the Clyde Childress tourney in Kentucky a couple of years later. I did win a few matches after that loss though and got in the money.

I have no interest in doing anything with Earl.

Sounds to me like he does need a spot. He got spanked twice.

Doesn't mean much!

The list of people who got spanked by Earl on occasion in the eighties covers pretty much the entire pool world. 11-3 might mean that Jay played like dirt or it may mean he missed one or two shots.

Earl ran seven racks in that match. I was ahead 2-1 and the next time I came to the table I was behind 8-2. To say I was a little dazed is an understatement.

So Jay, you're saying back then, you were STAR-STRUCK with Earl? :D
