Good point Scott but you don't see any sharking by the fans in the NBA when players are shooting freethrows do you? Uh nevermind

LOL...and when Fats STOPPED sharking, he made his opponents flinch!

careful Willie...I'm as big a fan of Mr Mosconi as the next 14.1 lover, but He's not totally innocent. It's well known about his "behavior" at more than a few exhibitions.....not to mention the time he sucker punched the ref of his match on the podium right AFTER getting his check for ?2nd place.

and on the "soccer" "fooball" issue....I watched exactly 1 game until a guy faked getting tripped....grabbed his leg like a sissy mary crying for mommy....the opponent got a yellow? card for the guys acting ability....then seconds later the "hurt guy" pops up prancing off to meet his boyfriend! that was the last time I watched that........"sport"

Gerry

Right Gerry. And the word "fan" was derived from "fanatic" so if there are no fanatics, there are no fans!

I really don't know where all this sissy stuff is coming from. Thourghout its modern history, pool has been a TOUGH, grubby, smokey, gambler, hustler game.

So now it's supposed to be like lawn croquet where when a guy misses we are supposed to say..."Oh...sticky wicket old chap."

I'll take a pass.

Golf is the ONLY major sport where something resembling gentlemanly behavior exists among the players or in the fan base...EXCEPT...the Rydyer Cup which is basically Katie Bar the Door for the fans AND the players.

And PLEASE you Euros...don't come with the Soccer thing. Soccer outside the U.S. is the game where the fans engage in MASS RIOTING and Rugby is the sport where the players try to kill each other!!

Tap, Tap, for JAY.

Back when Earl and Mike S. were the best tournament 9 ball players
around - they both had a reputation for whining.
The very important diference was, Mike would be pissed at himself
for olaying less than perfect, but still find a way to win - usually.

Earl, when playing poorly, would invariably look for someone to blame,
usually his oponent, and find a way to loose. He was even known
to leave tournaments if he lost in the early rounds.

Bottom line - he was an extremely gifted and capable player,
but was a crybaby and a wus - looks like he still is.

Dale<re-living someone's past>

And exactly what was John McEnroe other than a crybaby!! And why don't you call either McEnroe or Earl a "wus" to their face!!

LOL

HATTON.....CHAMPION????????? Maybe at 125 or 130lb but at 147 he can't get there. There are WOMEN who rotate their core better and punch with more power.

I thought early on that his strategy of trying to break MAYWEATHERS right hand with his melon was doomed to failure. I think he did damage his right in the 8th rd cause it was a left that knocked sissy boy into next tuesday.

Upon arrival of my new, updated bullshit deflecter I'll be sure to wear my best T for the photoshoot:)
Oh and what a lefthook that was! Hatton didn't know what hit him. But give the man his due.

"class"

Interesting concepts of what class is. Actually I think what appears to be the preplanned carrying of anything into the viewing area by an opposing player with the intent to throw it at a player being considered classy vastly expands the definition of what can still be considered classy. However it is all in fun so I propose some structure to this before it gets out of hand:

New for 2008: baby pacifiers, soft objects under one ounce legal to throw.

2010: Rotten fruit legal to throw but specify that a coconut is not fruit, neither are melons over three pounds to be legal to throw.

2012: Dead cats to be legalized to throw but limit the aging to two weeks.

By 2015 I assume the players will be competing inside a complete heavy chickenwire enclosure so at this point the fans will be allowed to throw anything they physically are able to but the throwing of other fans without consent should be discouraged.

I predict levels of audience participation never before seen in the history of pool. Jointly ran by the WWF and pool's alphabet group of the moment we may finally hit the mainstream!

Yeah, what DA said.

Imagine Daryl challenging one of those Filipino badasses to a fight? :D

Look, you don't understand football, so don't try drawing an analogy to it. It's not a sport. It's a way of life. It's a shared cultural heritage. It's how people all around the world identify themselves in a way no other sport comes close to, and you clearly don't understand because you're not part of it. Despite the massive Irish immigrant populations and travelling support from both sides of the divide, not one drop of Northern Ireland's 'troubles' leaked over into Liverpool or Glasgow in all that time. Football rivalries left no room for mere sectarian terrorism. And can you name another sport where a disputed penalty award ended up in war between two sovereign nations?

Boro Nut
Actually I play it (though it's called soccer here) every spring and fall. This fall my team went 12 wins 0 loses with +46 goal differential. I've definitely played with enough English, Irish, Portuguese, and Italian 1st generation immigrants to fully understand the emotional content.

i'm with you on this debate regarding earl and pool, but boro nut is right about football. it's a way of life and it's not called the beautiful game for nothing. an immediate example is christmas. on boxing day thousands of fans will be up early and out in the freezing cold weather to support their team. and it's something a lot of people look forward to the most about christmas!

one thing that gets me about all this is why people get so angry with earl. his critics call him a cry baby and childish, yet if he is so then why do people get so bothered by it? shrug it off. ralf souquet is a prime example, he just smiles to himself and ignores it. fair play to the man. to be honest i just cannot understand in a million years why peach and drago in particular got so angry. chillax and laugh it off if his behaviour is as bad as you say.

reacting like he broke into your house on christmas morning and pissed all over your kids presents is showing just as much lack of control that they say earl has.

on a side note, take a look at the best player to ever play football in many people's opinion, zinedine zidane. what the likes of earl and efren do with a cue ball, he just does with a ball! magic. and so graceful. a living legend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYUtKKbBTkw

btw in his LAST EVER GAME for france before he retired was the world cup final, he headbutted an italian player after he said things about his family on the pitch and got sent off. and france lost the match.

and you know what happened afterwards? he was honoured for his achievements as a player and a national icon the very next day by the press and the french prime minister! as he should have be!

yeah the way he reacted was bad, but he was pissed off and stood up for himself. no pussyfooting about. i think the people who get so angry about earl's 'behaviour' need to toughen up and forget about it.

gone off on a slight tangent there but there again all rants do i suppose!

I like Earl, people start giving him crap and he gives it right back. Big mistake to start that with Earl because he is at home in this element.

I watched The Best darned Sports Show last night and they had their "50 biggest blowups" review .... "mega-tilts" I've never seen before, lots of beeped out comments from guys you'd never expect them from like Jerry Rice. Emotions run wild in every competitive sport.

Yeah, while everyone gets more and more antagonized by his antics he seems to thrive on confrontation. It was amazing to me that while Michaela was trying to mediate his match with Daryl Peach, Earl had no problem refocusing and finishing off the match. But I could feel the anger in Daryl as he walked back to his seat. It's too bad a great sportsman like Peach let Earl get under his skin. I wish Earl wouldn't resort to antagonizing his opponents, but if he didn't he wouldn't be Earl.:o

Just to set the record straight. I'm not pro Europe or pro Philipines or pro any country for that matter when it comes to pool. What I am is pro Pool. I am for the sport and anything that dignifies it and makes it stronger.

That being said, Darryl Peach is a total class act, as are all the Europeans that played in the Mosconi Cup. He is a sportsman first and a true competitor in every sense of the word. The captain of Team Europe was also a class guy and a smart leader as well. It took a lot of prodding to get Darryl so riled up, believe me.

I can also say the same for all the members of Team USA bar one. I said it long ago and I will say it publicly again. Earl's behavior is disgraceful! He is absolutely the worst sport I have ever seen in any professional sport, BY FAR! McEnroe ain't close. He transcends bad sportsmanship and borders on insanity. It's a fine line between genius and insanity, and Earl has crossed it.

I will not sit idly by while excuse makers find reasons to condone Earl's boorish and inflammatory behavior. This is a man operating in a different reality from the rest of us. I saw it first hand this week.
I totally agree Jay.I have always liked Earl's game. But as a person,I think he is a classless piece of S**t!
The one thing I can't understand is why someone hasnt wrapped thier cue around his head.OOPS,I'm sorry, you just have to look at the size of all the people he has his tirades with.
Earl, pick on someone your own size!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone...may i remind you something from the past about mr. Strickland: years ago when Fransisco Bustamente lost his daughter during a major tournament (cant recall it right now), every single player of the tournament was wearing a black colar in sleeve in memory of Bustamente's daughter. The only one who didnt was Mr. Strickland. In addition, he won the tournament and he got up to the table and jumping like a chimpanzee. I little discency never hearted anyone. Lastly, not to mention the sore losing behavior of Cory Deuel against Drago in the latest Mosconi cup. Thanks everyone.

I'd never heard of Francisco's loss...that's something I never want to experience.

I'm not surprised of Earl's lack of decency. I've witnessed him berating the Filipino players for their lesser living conditions (mostly under his breath or when they are not around). When a crowd cheered for Efren across the room at the last DCC, Earl said to those sitting around him, "I don't know why they idolize a guy that eats rice & lives in a hut!".

I don't mind him acting up in response to competition, it is not unusual for high acheivers. However, that kind of prejudicial behavior and his lack of compassion for a fellow human as shown in the Bustemante episode is not acceptable. I might have to adjust my attitude towards him to be less forgiving and lenient.
