New deluxe Barenbrugge merry widow with Level 3 rings and luxurious feeling brown Tumbled Kangaroo wrap. We don't know exactly what cue wood this is other than it is nice looking and from South America, probably Brazil. The wood is dense and hard like Macassar Ebony...but it is not Mac Ebony. Even though we're stumped on the wood identity, we love the care and artistry that shines though on Dave's cues! Help with solving the wood mystery welcomed.

Very nice cue.
From the look of it and the lack of name of the wood I would call it "straight grain cocobolo" - very nice color imo.

Sometime David I will have one of your cues:smile:

Christian

It's probably Kingwood, that's from Brazil, but you'd be best trying to find good cue builders an ask them. Plus YOU KNOW you can use the internet and start looking for cues with woods from Brazil by going to a site that has a display of woods an hopefully you can find one of the wood that looks closest to yours

It looks like Cocobolo, but I'm not for sure without comparing the two Kingwood and Cocobolo side by side

Mystery Wood....

A few notes about this wood......
It had been in my shop for several [long] years.
It was sold to me as and I had written on it Mac ebony. It kind of looked like mac ebony in it's rough cut state. [hard, heavy, excellent wood for a cue].
I am 99.99% sure it is not Mac ebony.
It was surrounded by other woods in my storage that mostly came from South America.
I believe it to be from that region of the world but again not 100% sure.
I don't believe it to be from the dalbergia family but there's a very small chance it could be.
We have searched the many internet web sites and I have shown the wood in various stages of the build to numerous people in the wood related world.
The answers and guesses have been up and down the scale.
In short.....I wish I had purchased more of this wood way back. It was the only piece I had.
Of course, the finished beauty of this wood really pops when it's in the light and it has a unique sparkle to it overall. The cue turned out a very nice [unique] looking color and grain.
Here are some pre build photo's of this cue wood.....

At this point...your guess is as good as mine!

what about katalox?

100% sure it is not katalox(an under appreciated cue hardwood, IMO). Ive worked with katalox and still have several pieces of it--which tends to be a deep dark purple-brown in color.

congrats, this is definitely an unique piece of wood that rarely seen, good find!!

It looks like Cocobolo, but I am sure you have smelled enough Cocobolo to eliminate that one just off the smell. It is a nice looking cue.
