DCC Advice in Advance

Ok, this will be my first time ever at the DCC. I can't tell you how stoked I am already! Especially since it falls during my birthday, I'm sure it will be a good time.

With that said, I need some advice from all you DCC seasoned vets. What days should I try to go(limited to three)? I'm only a couple hours away so I'll be driving and don't have to worry about hotel accomodations. Do you have to buy tickets at the horseshoe or can I purchase in advance? If I have to by them there, do you get there super early on the opening day or is there plenty to come by? Are VIP tickets worth it? They really don't cost that much IMO?

Now, for the fan in me. Is it cool to bring memoribillia to get signed, are the players usually available for autographs? I know I always see pictures of them signing but wouldnt want to be a jerk pushing myself on them.

Thanks for all the advice in advance, remember I'm a rookie to the DCC(and pro events in general)!

You can get tickets or enter the events on the DCC website http://www.dcctickets.com/

It's just like a normal tournament and you will see all the players up close walking around and have plenty of time to get anything signed. They all seem to be more than happy to. As for the best day's, it depends on what event you like. I know that there is a cut off date of about a week before it starts if you want to enter an event online but I dont know about spectator things like VIP passes. You dont have to get their early because if you choose to just watch, all you do is get a 1 day braclet or entire event pass.

Banks are first, followed by One Pocket and then 9-Ball. Buy the VIP seat if you want to sit up close in the TV arena. Of course for pool, sitting up a little higher might be a better viewing seat. Not hard to find a good seat at DCC, so much going on everywhere!

Okay, a friendly game. How about ten ahead for 500. That's fifty a game. If I have a day off at DCC we can play. Can I borrow your break cue? I don't have one.

DCC in advance

I would try to find someone to bunk with at the hotel. It's worth it to me to be able to just go relax for a few minutes at a time and not have to run back and forth to your car and driving even 2 hours 1 way is 4 total a day. I did that before when money was tight but if you can afford it stay there. Also what is your main priority ? To watch a specific game , get stuff signed or a combination? The first 2 or 3 days is banks only and most of the players are there and not tired so you will see them many times a day , as the week goes on new people come in but a lot of the players are resting more and get scarce unless in a match. They probably can tell you what cuemakers will be there if you email them. Also take a look at the brackets when you get there and follow the players you are interested in most. I have pictures and autographs of every player for the last 25 years and all they ever wanted was to not be bothered when they were getting ready to play. Only a handful were not willing after they had been beaten if you gave them a little time for it to stop stinging. I never felt it was wrong to ask a player to sign an autograph for free but if it's something like a cue or book or something that gains in value I think you should give them something for their time. If I had intended to sell my autographs I would have given them something but that was never my intention , they will go in the box when I go. The DCC is as good as it gets in my opinion if you can find a way stay longer 3 days will go by fast. I hope Scott Smith is back this year, I don't know what happened and It's none of my business but he was a huge part of the last 20 years of pool tournaments for me. If not I wish him well.
Good Luck

What about cue dealers/venders? Lots of big names?
As it gets closer there will be a list on the DCC section here on AZ. I'm not sure if they have had as many vendors since the switch of venues, but they will have cuemakers, cue retailers, cue repair, cue building supplies, books/DVDs, Tee shirts etc.

Thanks Richie, but if I'm gambling at pool, I'M my favorite charity! If TAR wants to stream it, then whatever share I get can go to charity. If TAR does well selling this show, maybe they can donate 10% to charity. The problem for TAR is a ten ahead match is hard to schedule. It could be over in an hour or take all day. And I don't want to play a race with Chris. I'm a grinder too, and for me 500 is 500! The way I look at it is this. It represents a thousand dollar swing in my bankroll. That's like a full week of expenses at DCC.

I do have an idea though. Maybe TAR can give us a four hour segment one day (or night). If we finish fine. If not we have to either finish elsewhere or on another day. I suspect it will end within four hours. That's a lot of 9-Ball, 40-50 games.

As someone else mentioned, stay at the hotel if you can afford it. They will be announcing group rates for the tournament as the events nears, which I believe are $120 or $130/night. The next nearest rooms are in New Albany, about 15 miles up the road, and they can usually be had for $60-$80/night.

Not sure about spectator tickets, but tournament entry fees are higher if you pay them at the event, so I always pre-register online.

Be prepared for limited food choices at the casino. There is an expensive steak house, a buffet place, a sports bar type thing that seems to be closed way more than it's open, and a little Italian joint that gave a bunch of people food poisoning last year. If none of those appeal, you will have to drive into New Albany or Louisville, which will be 1/2 hour to 1 hour of driving time round-trip, or pack a lunch.

As far as what days to go, you just have to pick the time when your favorite game(s) are happening. The event schedule should be at dcctickets.com at some point, if it's not there already.

Don't get too excited about the action room. It just ain't what it used to be back at the exec west. Thankfully, there is plenty of tournament action to keep you entertained the whole time, and the event is still well worth price of admission.

If you want to play at all while you are there, sign up for the AZ member room. There will be threads about it as the time nears. I think it's only like $20, and it is well worth the money.

Have fun and don't forget to set aside an hour or two each night for sleep!

Aaron
