DCC Experience

Good to see you again Ken! The DCC is such a great event, I wouldn't miss it for the world.

As for Drake, today is his 18th birthday... no better way for an 18 year old pool player to spend his day than at the DCC.

Drake had never played in a Bank tournament and was a little nervous about that on Thurs evening. I played him some banks and it did not take long for me to tell him he had nothing to worry about.

He plays well beyond his age in terms of poise (as Mark said) and moving. Most young players want to fire at everything, but Drake makes a lot of very mature decisions at the table. Credit goes to his dad Dale. Dale is the person that got me into pool and cues back in the 80's.

Dale understands the ins and outs of pool, and has his son Drake on the only path he would ever let him go down as a pool player. Having Mark Wilson and Nick Varner as close friends certainly helps mold a young player into a mature and respectful player.

Best of luck to Drake at Lindenwood College!

Great story ken. One of these years, I guess it will be on the Bucket List.

One thing tho. You didn't mention LOU.

I don't know if thats good or bad.

:smile:Just got back home after having a nice time at DCC.

The Bigfoot experience was different than what I expected. I expected outstanding shot making, but what I saw was incredible cue ball control. The table appeared to super fast, but the cue ball control was breathtaking. I guess when you expect one thing and you see something totally different, you take notice.

Secondly, it was great to see the new crop of youngsters playing. I didn't see Landon, but there were plenty of new young faces. One of note was a 17 year old that beat Earl Strickland in the banks. It wasn't that many years ago that I wrote for Inside Pool an article of the "Young Guns". Those "Young Guns" were Gabe, Corey, SVB, etc. I guess those guys are the "Middle Age Guns" now .

I saw a lot of great sportsmanship with a lot of matches. When you hear about pool dying and you see a couple of common folks playing a match and are having a good time and are being great sports too, it makes you understand pool is doing fine, maybe not for professionals, but us mere mortals still love and respect the game.

Finally, I really like seeing all my friends I have met over the years and I probably had at least 10 people and introduce themselves to me as an AZ member and recognized me from my picture. Great AZ folks.

If you are on the fence about going, let me say go. You will be glad that you did.:thumbup:

Ken

What a nice and uplifting post:smile:. Thanks!

Another younger player (not as young as Drake) that impressed me is Danny Smith. He is obvious a great pool player but beyond that Danny knows how to carry himself well. Guess I am just surprised because I saw who he hangs out with but he doesn't let them influence how he treats his opponent or acts in public.

I actually staked Drake in some games on his 18th birthday. The kid is an incredible pool player for his age. I also staked his 13 year old younger brother, Seth, in his first ever action game. He beat another young player, Vincent, in a couple sets and then took on Vincent's dad in a $100 set. Seth brought home the money. :)
