could anyone give a survey or summary of the action games up there this year

i saw something about that one handed spot shot girl

that is the kind of stuff i love

when i was a kid it was not unusual to see or play
proposition games with frequency

some people call them gaff games but I love them

Jersey Red once gave me 3 pockets to his one and beat my brains out

The funniest thing about the thing,we had about 175 sweaters
and rail birds, was every time i took a bath room break at least two guys would
follow me into the urinal ,stand on each side and ask me"

"Don't you think
its a bad game?You haven't won a single game?"

I had never had anyone try to pull me up before and I took it
was a very strange and funny thing for me

Dick Lane the straight pool champ scolded me,and Mike 'the cop" Haines
suggested I take some time off

Funny how everyone but you can see when you have a bad game

Later Red and I became good friends,he even came to the house for burgers( with Dennis Glenn ,Verl Horn,Barry Szamboti ,Tommy Rey)
and thrilled the crowd with this story
of beating me,and many other great stories

Red had autographed a copy of "One Pocket Shots "to me saying
"if you could shoot like you match up,I would need 8 to 6"

After hearing him tell this story about the time we matched up,my wife said to me
concerning the inscription int he book

" Do you think he was speaking tongue in cheek?I thought it was a compliment"

After that she was always less eager for me to go to the pool room with
a big wad.of cash

The happenings were well documented in the action room thread, courtesy of terryhanna.

It would be a disservice to him to ignore it, and one to yourself, if you care and don't read it.

Quite a few 5 figure sets.

i didn't realize it

please forgive my unintended disservice

this is he way to educate a fella who blindly intrudes
thank you again

please cancel any duplications

Shit, man...no need for apologies. Nobody sees everything on the azb. Except the Russians. They are watching.

The girl doing the one-handed shot shots spends way to much time in the pool halls. I almost feel sorry for her.

that would include most of us

i feel sorry for anyone who spends too much time in the pool room

We all probably wish we could stand to spend that much time in a pool room....those were good days when you wanted to go and play all the time. Hell I'm jealous

No more Louie Roberts Action Award

I don't know anything about the award, but I do know a little about
Louie Roberts

He was just a young fella in the armed services when I met him at the pool room

An upstairs old school place called Times Square in Dallas

Not particularly upscale or high class, but it was home to the
patrons of action in Big D backthen

None finer than louie roberts

he would come in with a flashy dame on his elbow and
offer to play anyone for any amount,or so it seemed to me at the time

Unlike the theother cynical stereotyped hustler sorts,
always looking for the Hungarian nuts

Louie wanted to play and play high and often,he once explained to me that the spot didn't matter if the other guy wasn't shooting

There was a kind of logic to his thinking, but of course it only applied to
you if you were Louie Roberts or if you played like him

And no one played like louie Roberts,at least not here ,not then
No,Louie was different, A fella offered Louie the 7,what do you think Louie
said"

He said "i wll give you the 7"

Counter intuitive, thinking outside the box,not barnyard logic

it scared me,yet it thrilled me,here was something different
someone different

I hated it when I heard Louie died, and now I hate it when I hear the Louie Roberts
Award is gone, seems like another thing that i really loved is gone

Perhaps like the cowboys of the west, the pool hustler, the road agent,a way of life
that seemed so free,It's all going the way of the DoDo bird

It makes me sad,no I wouldn't let my kids get in the life,I would hate it.
They hear the stories, they met Verl Horn, ronnie allen, eddie taylor and Jersey Red

they had vicarious thrills hearing about dad's friends, kinda like watching Oceans 11

,but it didn't seem real to them

and I am glad
my wife loves the stories but not once was she inthe pool room

Still,there is something I miss about it all,it was something I lived,but
pretty soon it will be long gone
