I think it helps to book the fare for coming and going on certain days of the week.

My brother just got a round-trip air fare from California to D.C. for $213. He is staying over for 10 days, which may be one reason it's so cheap. Usually it's from $600 to $800 for him to come here for one week. When he pushed it up to 10 days, the rate went down to a lower rate.

Arriving on a Saturday and leaving on a Saturday also provides an opportunity for lesser fares. Business travelers usually travel Monday through Friday, so coming and going on weekends may be helpful.

Also, as most know, booking well in advance is key. ;)
 
in october sw ran a deal where one way from ft lauderdale to the derby was $59 one way. that was a helluva deal

Yeah Jam, I am no good at booking air fares. If it were up to me, we'd never get anywhere. I let the wifey handle it. She got us return from Vegas and 5 nights for $1200.00. Coming from Canada and relatively short notice, that was pretty decent.
