DERBY CITY CLASSIC THOUGHTS, Jan 23-31.

I have been thinking about the Derby City Classic for a while now, just trying to make a decision as to go or not.

The DCC is the tournament of the year for most of us, in that there are so many different things that we can choose to participate in. I'm not going to list all of the things that you all know are there but I might ask you what in particular attracts you to the Derby City Classic?

I like the fact that I might get to play one of a hundred different professional pool players in a single tournament; the inexpensive cost for that match is lagniappe. It is always a lot of fun to belly up to the table with a professional even if you get an old fashion whipping. It's more fun when you give one and you have a heck of story to tell when you get home.

For the most part, we here on AZ Billiards are amateur pool players. We don't depend upon pool tournmanents or sponsors for our main income.

The Derby City Classic is at a crossroads in my opinion. This crossroads has unlimited potential. I don't know how many of you are aware that Harrah's Properties owns the Horseshoe Casino & Hotel where this year's Derby City Classic is being held.

Harrah's has 54 different casino properties.

If we show up in numbers at this tournament this year and obtain a free Harrah's Card, spend a little money eating and drinking, playing poker, playing pool; oh and maybe a little gambling at their table games or slots, it is possible that something REALLY BIG could happen. Can you imagine if Harrah's likes the turnout at the Derby City Classic, what can happen? They could easily fund a NATIONAL TOUR. That National Tour could be held at Harrah's Casino properties the world over. If such a tour were to be funded by Harrah's, it could even bring pool to television. We've previously discussed what television advertising dollars can do for pool so I won't say more about that.

I've had some other things going on in my life that have side tracked me and I've been undecided about going to DCC. I know that Efren, Francisco, Ralph, Darren, Karen, Jeanette and a slew of other professional pool players will be there for sure.

What I really like about having the DCC at the Casino is that they have plenty of good food, lots of great security and plenty of clean bathrooms and nice hotel. Those are givens.

This year you can invite your better half to go to the DCC as a mini vacation. The pool rooms are all sold out at the Casino Hotel (at least for now). You can still get a room at the Holiday Inn a few miles away and the DCC will have a shuttle running back and forth from the HOliday Inn to the Tournament. In addition, you never know if the Horshoed Casino doesn't sell out all of their "gambler rooms", they may give the DCC some additional rooms.

There's a lot at stake right now, not just for the DCC but for pool in general. With the economy in the dumpster right now, casinos are looking at new revenue streams or at least at new target audiences. If the pool world shows up in the right numbers at this year's DCC, it could open the door to some awesome tournaments.

Look, it's plain as the nose on your face. The casinos have what we need to host big pool events: LARGE SPACE, GOOD FOOD, GREAT LODGING, SAFE ENVIRONMENT. They just don't now if they want us and we will have to show them that we are a valuable target audience. That doesn't mean that we all have to be "whales". We can just show up and have a good time without going off for the family's jewels. Like most pool players that gamble, I have had my time at the crap tables and the card tables. It doesn't hold the same interest for me that it once did. I can gamble in the casino or just have a nice meal there and never miss going off for my dollar.

Anyway, I believe I have made a decision to go even if it is only for a few days or the weekend. Now, I just have to decide when and where.

I know I have Roy, the Fish from Norway who doesn't care if he is putting out the seine or being put in the seine.

I have been playing in the local handicapped tournaments rather well but in the non-handicapped tournaments I have been sucking air.... go figure...
My individual matches with kindred spirits has been about even on the money for the last several months.

The GingerBread Man could be going and maybe I might get another glimpse of Pool Wars or maybe become a part of Pool Wars II. (J/k)

Maybe, I can get Fatboy to stake me against the Tooth. I'll be sure to borrow some beta blockers from SpiderWeb Comm. :D

It's getting close to Christmas and I have been trying to make a decision about going to the DCC as it is only a month away. With airlines begging for customers, there may be some cheap Internet flights available or I might get one of those "stand-by tickets" from my Delta Airlines buddy. :help:

Anyway, I think there is a lot at stake for pool with the DCC being held at a Harrah's property and hope to see you there.

Best Regards and Happy Holidays.

If you have the funds, times, etc. to get there, etc. I would go as this could be the last DCC if the DCC Event doesn't fly at the Harrah's facility.

You make a lot of GREAT points in your post about supporting pool. I agree with much of what you say.

The casino industry is hurting during these tough economic times. I just read this little snippet in this morning's news:

Donald Trump is considering taking his ailing gaming group Trump Entertainment Resorts (TRMP.O) private, the Financial Times reported on its website on Thursday, citing people familiar with the situation.

The entertainment mogul owns a 24 percent stake in the casino operator, which missed a $53.1 million bond interest payment earlier this month. The company had no immediate comment on the report.

A 30-day grace period on the interest payment runs out at the end of December. The company has said it would pursue discussions with lenders to restructure its capital structure over the period.

The Hilton Hotel chain tried to start a billiard tour, but it went south after the second event in Pittsburgh. Hardly anybody showed up to play, much less watch it. This tour, though, had problems from the start with its planning, IMHO. It did not do its homework beforehand.

The DCC is quite a different animal than a pool tour. Hundreds of players will converge on this casino, I hope, much like Allen Hopkins' annual Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge. You cannot get a hotel room at the joint at SBE, as they are reserved for vendors. Thousands of league players show up each and every year. The place is always packed.

I hope this is what happens with the DCC this year. It will be interesting to see how the casino environment works with the DCC as it pertains to pool action.

Though many folks like the craps tables, most pool players today seem to enjoy playing in the poker rooms at the casinos more now.

One thing for sure, I'll bet they have HEAT in that casino. The Executive West Inn was always FREEZING COLD in that front lobby area. Plus, there will be plenty of restaurants, hopefully, to get a nice meal, as opposed to the one and only Executive West Inn restaurant which was not so good at times.

Looking forward to reading all about the upcoming DCC. I hope some AzB-ers are kind enough to take time to post while it is in progress. I know it is a pain in the neck to post on a forum when you're at an event, but think of the inquiring minds back home, like ME! :grin-square:

Safe journey to all!

They're all yours, brother. Tooth will never play you, though. He'll twist his cue together and act like he's gonna play, and then he'll force you to wear his glasses or some crap like that. In the meantime, the guy probably had lasik twice over and could see a hummingbird shit on a petal from 100 yards out.

JAM, I would really like to see you and Keith at our annual One Pocket Hall of Fame dinner. Please drop me a note if there is anything I can do to facilitate this. Just one night -- the two of you. A fantastic time, absolutely guaranteed!!

Joey, all excellent points, and I will be there for sure. Our HOF dinner is on for Tuesday the 27th and early indications are turnout will still be strong.

SEE YOU THERE!!!!!!!

Donald Trump's properties always go bankrupt, busting all the investors. That's his thing. He always makes out fine though. This guy could give KT the five out when it comes to money making scams.

Wait a second David, that's the line of the year! "He could see a hummingbird shit on a leaf from 100 yards away." Frame that one!

Bring your "D" game JoeyA! :D

You make some very good points about the Casino and why people should attend this event, even only for a few days.

Make SURE to get a Harrah's card (they're free). It might even entitle you to some free play on the gaming tables or other such gaming.

Use your Harrah's card everytime you eat something or do any type of gaming. That way, they will know how good of suckers pool players can be. :grin-square: It would be nice to see the Casinos salivating over the pool industry's business.

Harrah's Properties could easily put up much added dinero in the future if they think it could bring them a new stream of customers.

the cost of DCC this year is what has me undecided on going. I go to a few events a year (Open,Expo,DCC, many Joss, and Predator events) and the cost is getting more and more difficult to go. I think something has got to give soon or they wil not get any spectors.

Stop thinking about it Joey and make your reservations.

You also have the old man from California willing to help pay for your trip. After the spread you laid down in Gulfport (even), I know you are planning to take me off the next time we meet.

The winner of our match should be the one who gets to play Roy first, but I'm starting to suspect he is not the Nordic Fish he wants us to believe he is.

And as another sign of my benevolence, I'm going to let you play Chicago Mike first.

All of the above should help pay for a few more days stay at the Derby. John

John. To do it easy for you guys, you both can play me on the same time, on two tables next to eachother. I will need more handicap playing like that, but the good thing is that you two don't have to fight about who will rob me first! :p

Since you don't know what I look like I have attached a picture of me.

I will most definitely use the Harrah's card, but I'll try to stay away from the gaming tables...

I prefer gambling on pool if that option is available, but you can use your winnings from our match on the gaming tables :)

I don't know how I can ever repay your generosity.

I had a great time last year and was there for all 10 or 11 days. But I was also playing in the 3 Cushion tournament, which the DCC decided not to make room for this year! And by entering the 3C Tournament I received a free pass for the duration of the Derby, They are not offering free admissiion to us lowly Billiard players this year, and we are having our tournament at the Pendennis Club in Louisville.

But I can see your point about the possibilities by bring associated with Harrah's. I'll probably be there a day or two after the Billiards is over. I sent in my money for the AZB Room and will probably stop by to see what's happening there. I'll support it as much as I can afford.

My partner from last year (my roommate) decided not to go this year because of the added expense, and inconvenience, traveling, etc. ..... as have several others who attended last year. If Billiards would have been included in the schedule, we definitely would have been there for the whole shebang ..... same as last year.

Good Luck to everyone . and I hope the DCC is a great success.

JoeyA! Ya gotta go man!

One thing is for sure, you're never going to find a bigger cast of characters all together like this anywhere else on the planet, no matter what changes are made. :D

Edit - Be honest, that money was just going to go to booze anyways. :D

Joey, I have a great idea. One night the four of us (John, Roy, you and me) can play a partners One Pocket game. We change partners after each game. Coaching allowed, that makes it more fun. That would be a blast and no handicapping involved this way, since we all get to be partners with everyone else. Can I get a second?
