KT has made some offers to reward some of the entrants....
"Kevin Trudeau has spiced up the second day of the qualifier with two offers. Recognizing the intensity of the event and the fact that the entrants are playing their hearts out, he has offered free entry into the remaining three qualifiers to the last four standing in the one-loss side and the last two in the winners’ side. Also, he has challenged the players to break and run six racks, dangling a plummy $5,000 bonus as a reward. Otherwise, the qualifier carries no monetary prizes, with the exception of the winners of the one-loss and the winners’-side brackets."

On the A side of the charts at the time of this writing, it will be Engert vs. Jason Miller. Alex Pagulayan will be playing 21-year-old Vilmos Foldes from Hungary on the winners' side. This will be a great match!

The losers side is in progress: Jamito vs. North Carolinian Keith Bennett.
Huewagen will play the winner of this match. The loser is out.

Also in progress at the time of this writing: George Breedlove vs. Filipino "Jalapena." This will be a hard-fought battle to the finish.

Matt Schmidt is up against Shane Van Boeing from South Dakota. I don't know who Matt Schmidt is, but I know Shane will be giving it his all. He's got endurance and can get there.

If I had to make a prediction at this juncture, I think I'd have to go with Engert and Foldes.

for Breedlove or Pena. Hemmah lost out.
 
Pagulayan vs Foldes should be a fantastic matchup, it was Foldes who knocked Pagulayan out of the WPC last summer, I watched the match on TV a few months ago and Foldes is one hell of a player.

He is an experienced tournament player, and at 21 years of age, this Hungarian champion on the road to riches.

There's a typo up on the website, saying Hemmah is playing but he is already out! :eek: Pagulayan and Engert lost. Go Jason Miller..he is having a fabulous week! He and Foldes are playing for the point and an automatic tour card.

Foldes also beat Archer at the World Summit. Foldes has a ton of game!

The IPT Qualifier Field Narrows

January 15, 2006 - 3:20 p.m.

In the first morning match to wind down, Hard Times house pro Dave Hemmah fell to Lee Heuwagen. Up 6-3, he never won another game, as Heuwagen swept the next seven in a row to win 10-6.

“Torture,” Hemmah described his match. “He ran out from everywhere—what can I say? I’ve known him for years, he’s from my hometown. He plays great. He’s got the potential to go all the way.”

Hemmah plans on heading down to the next IPT qualifier at Pool Room in Atlanta, GA. “I’m actually going to go to Atlanta and then if need be play in Bellflower. I don’t want to—I’d rather host it and let somebody else win that one. But I’ll be in Atlanta.”

Shane Van Boening is still going strong, ousting Michael Schmidt 10-6. Van Boening reached a 4-1 lead with two break-and-runs. He allowed Schmidt a couple of games, then ran a three-pack to make the score 8-4. Schmidt was able to score two more racks before Van Boening won.

Keith Bennett bested Gerardo Jamito in a tight 10-8 match but lost in the next round to Heuwagen, who sent him packing with a 10-5 score. George Breedlove was also eliminated after Filipino Al Lapena took a 10-7 victory in their one-loss side match. Lapena went on to meet Van Boening in the next round, who dealt him a decisive 10-3 win.

In the winners’-side bracket, Thomas Engert finally met his match in Jason Miller, who won the Master of the Table award at the 2006 Derby City Classic, taking first in the 9-ball banks and second in the one-pocket division. It was a close, bitterly fought match, but Miller ended up a 10-8 winner. Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan also got moved to the left side of the chart courtesy of Hungarian Vilmos Foldes, who dealt him a stunning 10-3 defeat.

Foldes and Miller are currently playing in the winners’-side finals. The defeated player will move to the west side and try again, while the winner will receive an IPT tour card for the 2006 season. Remaining in the one-loss side are Thomas Engert, Shane Van Boening, Alex Pagulayan, and Lee Heuwagen. All six are guaranteed free entries into the next three qualifiers if they do not finish in the top two.

The three remaining qualifiers are:

January 27-29 at Pool Room Sports Bar & Grill in Marietta (Atlanta), GA
February 17-19 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA
February 24-26 at Country Club USA in Chelmsford (Boston), MA

This is getting down to the nitty-gritty. Ya gotta feel good for Jason, he's this year's mayor of Louisville, KY.

Quite an amazing story for Jason Miller this past week. I hope they had the cameras rolling for some background stories. He could do quite well on the tour with this momentum behind him.

Miller Makes It to the IPT

January 15, 2006 - 5:07 p.m.

Jason Miller, the week’s big winner at the 8th Annual Derby City Classic, just won the first IPT 2006 season spot with a 10-6 victory over Hungary’s Vilmos Foldes.

The match began fairly evenly, but when the score was knotted at 3, Miller broke and ran two racks in a row. He came up dry on the break, and the rangy Foldes cleared that table and broke and ran the next to tie again. From there, Miller only allowed his opponent one additional game before sweeping across the finish line. The Dayton, OH, player dropped the 8 on the break and also registered two run-outs for his victory.

“First in banks, second in one-pocket, qualified for this tour, and all with a three-dollar cue!” Alex Pagulayan exclaimed loudly, examining Miller’s weapon of choice—a Dufferin butt with a Schon shaft. Miller was unperturbed, saying that the cue is probably worth more like $50.

“I’m extremely excited,” Miller enthused. “This is great. The week was great … and then winning this card is just icing on the cake. It’s been a long ten days. A marathon. I just concentrate on one match at a time, and that’s about it. I got a good night’s sleep every night, didn’t stay up late, no gambling matches. It was well worth it.”

Thomas Engert recovered from his first defeat by besting Shane Van Boening roundly with a score of 10-2. Van Boening notched the first game, but Engert was on fire, winning nine games in a row to reach the hill. Only one more rack went to Van Boening before Engert finished him off.

Alex Pagulayan was so intense in his match that once he executed one shot, he focused in on the next and next took his eyes off it until it dropped in the pocket. He came back from an early 4-1 deficit against Lee Heuwagen to turn it around to a 6-5 advantage. From there, the players traded racks until Pagulayan reached a 10-8 victory.

Currently, Alex Pagulayan and Thomas Engert are playing. The winner of that match will face Vilmos Foldes in the one-loss side finals, which will determine the second IPT 2006 card holder for this event.

With two thoroughbreds earning their tour cards today, it's a very good day for the fans of the game and for the IPT.
