Derby City & 'Tuscaloosa Squirrel'

And Parica is 60. He was born in 1946. Everyone thinks he is 57 or 58, but it had his birth date on a website about him, and I posted all the info
about him previously.

Taken from the WPC website: http://www.worldpoolchampionship.com/players_detail.asp?player_id=2041

"Date Of Birth: 18 April 1949
Based: Los Angeles, USA
Hobbies: Swimming, basketball and singing...."

I've never seen Jose swim, play basketball, or sing! :D

However, a little unknown Jose Parica factoid, according to my roommate, is that Jose was, in fact, an eight-time golden glove boxer.

From?

JAM, Marshall seen the pictures but didn't know Berle. He said the Partner game was Marshall & Wade playing Ricky Byrd & Bramcat. Cornbred Red was sweating it. Marshall said that Red said that after watching Squirrel shoot he was going to start back playing.:D

Smack

May be`Squirrel`has not been going around much except to breakers in Mobile and that may be the reason he did not recognize Berle. Berle used to own knoxville billiard club in knoxville,TN and is very familiar to the gambling scene. His lady used to stake Keith. That was many years ago.
BTw is it Brimcat or Bramcat?

is 'Squirrel' from? The 'Squirrel' I knew was from Pasadena, Tx, and about 19 in 1971. He went to Vegas, and ended up beating Wimpy for the 9 ball Championship. He would be about 55 today.

That Squirrel (from Texas) is Keith Thompson, a different guy.

Smackmac, can't wait to see you in KY too! I know. I owe you a beer. :p Of course we could just adjust the spot, to something that's FAIR, ha ha....

Squirrel

I think Marshal and me went to Mobile once last year for the big tournament. I think he stays in touch with a few guys from down there. I bet he will remember 'Berle' when I say he used to stake Keith or either used to run KBC.

Alice, Dont know about adjusting, I feel like you layed a lemon in my lap. lol, but we will talk about it. Oh, not just a beer but you owe me a little jelly also. You know what im talking about? LOL

The "Squirrel" you mean is Keith Thompson who won the All-Around beating Wimpy and Ronnie Allen. It was in Johnston City, IL not Vegas. I know this for sure because Keith used my cue to play in the finals.

I was there, and saw the final and bearded one is correct, I know it was a year or two before the raid.
Kieth was young, tall and lanky, handsome with long brown hair and had gotten the total support of the hippie population from SIU in Carbondale IL. It was the beginning of the midwest farming era for the 60's hippie generation.

Marshall 'Squirrel' Carpenter wants the WORLD to know that he is 78 years old, and soon to be 79 on Feb 9th, 2007. He wants to play one pocket with any human being over 70 years of age.

No one over 70 will be barred playing one pocket.

Getting back to the original question on this thread.....

.....As far as some 'seniors' who might-could hang with Squirrel, a few names popped into my mind of some great old One Pocket players: 'Patcheye', 'Miami', 'Filipino Gene', and maybe on a lesser note - John Henry.......I know a couple of these guys were still playing good a few years back, and I think they all are over 70 years old....Anybody have more updated info on how these guys are doing/playing these days ?......Thanks, Ghost

Patcheye sometimes comes to Louisville for the DCC. I saw him last year in Philly area. He said he was taking care of a family member, I think.

Is John Henry the guy on the right in this picture?

Wow, I'm glad to hear John Henry is still hitting 'em. He was a real gem. He hung his hat in D.C. area for a spell and was in combat whenever and wherever he could find him a game. I would really like to see him again and exchange old war stories. I loved watching him when he was barking. He'll definitely remember me and mine at that time! LOL :D

John Henry is, indeed, an American road warrior, a rare breed in these times.:)

Bet on John Henry

If I was forced to bet, I think John Henry, although older than Squirrel, is probably the favorite now playing 1pkt.

I don't know about John Henry, I have heard his name more than once. Marshal said patch eye was playing pretty sporty some years ago. He said they have never played though. I would love to see the older champs in one pocket combat like John Henry and Squirrel!! I would rather watch this than 2 young gun slingers.

oldies action

Might be fun to have theolder player action table over 65 .Have them sign up for it,have it early{older folk like to get up early] 10am ? 100.00 a stick ring game maby. This could be a lot of fun for the young guns to see! Sure would help with the nut. They would go home with winnings off their old friends, They would love this!! Just a IDEA!!

I'm not sure if Patch Eye is the favorite over Squirrel right now or not. He still plays strong, though. In 2000 he was 4th in the one pocket division at Derby City.

2 other black guys who are only 2 years away from being 70 who I believe would be favorites over Squirrel (partly because they're nearly 10 years younger than Squirrel) are "Busdriver Ronnie" Williams and Black Nate, both from the Washington DC area. Nate might be able to hang with many of the best young players of today.

Is that skinny Nate, who used to live in LA and Detroit? One other player over 70 who can still play good One Pocket is Pete Glenn from Phoenix. One of the great undercover pool hustlers of all time. He raised a big family playing pool. Denny and Steve Glenn (big cue collectors) are his sons. Love to see him in Louisville. He was originally from Cincy I believe.

Fat Glenn?

Jay, I'm sure he means the Nate from LA. I ran into him in Derby City a few years ago. Were you around when I played him banks in the black all-night pool room in Culver City in the early '70s?
And are you talking about Fat Glenn who spent a lot of time in Detroit at the Rack. He used to go to Johnston City too. He and I played there in '71. He was also from Ohio and would send home every quarter he made. We played often in Detroit, he was a lot of fun, and knew the game of Onepocket very well.
