Derby Daze ... # 2

Dear Gentle Readers,

To me, Derby is about a couple of things - - streams and dreams.

Streams … if live streaming isn’t part of the answer to the problems that beset professional pool in America, it’s the lever to pry open the solution door. Streaming has improved so much in the relatively short time I’ve been hanging around here.

Dreams … Someday, when I’m fortunate enough to attend, I’d like to sit in the front row. I pledge not to be too yap-yap. Most of the time. Of course the lighting wants to be more flattering and the camera angles adjusted somewhat, but all of that can be worked out.

Quick query: why do some of the top players take aiming strokes at the bottom of the cue ball when they go on to hit center ball?

The Big Foot 10-ball Challenge table is in the streaming room only for this specific event. It will be swapped out for a 9-footer when the winner is crowned. My Big Foot question: is four days too long to tie up the Arena? It’s obviously a calculated decision … to go through a field of16 players in a single-elimination format doesn’t require that much calendar.

Now, if Big Foot merely extends the Derby streaming coverage, terrific. But if it’s taking viewing time away from one-pocket, banks and 9-ball - - the official Derby events - - should we take another look at how screen time is allocated?

Update: over 400 in the 9-ball banks tourney.

Greg Sullivan interview: “I’ll answer any questions you have; post them in AZ.”

Saturday’s words of wit and wisdom:

“Archer announced he’s going to reclaim his title.” (As the best player in America.)

“Don’t play position when you have position.” (Buddy Hall quote.)

Speaking about his charm, personality and cuteness, “Alex has always been my favorite player.” Alex made five balls on one break. Alex was caught on-camera, briefly, asleep in the audience.

“He played so fast he made the 9-ball before the 7 hung up.”

“There is a one-piece slate on the 10-foot table.”

“Shaw is unbelievable.”

“Tough safety or tough shot - - always play offense. You might get a back-door safety.”

“Kick and make contact - - you have a 30% chance of something good happening.”

“Whoever pushes out has the worst of it.” (So tie up balls.)

“The harder you shoot, the bigger the angle.”

After a terrific hill / hill safety battle between Bustamante and Morra, “The most exciting match I’ve seen in years.”

After SVB pushed out, “I think Shane is playing poker.”

“Pool is a sport, you have to be in shape.” (For long contests.)

“Snooker players have one-piece cues. With cases just as long.”

“Next best thing to snookering is distance.”

“You’d have to be mad at your backer to try that shot.”

‘Umble reportage is my life,

Sunny

P. S. Like a rather slow student, I still think the 7-ball is the 6-ball. (Cyclop.) But I shall persevere.

thank you, Sunnyone, for sharing your fine observations.

Regarding the Cyclop blue/green dilemma, I suggest you do as I.

Make the association 'GREEN = GO' as in the green 6b must go before the blue 7b.

I think they need to do something to untie that arena for 4 full days or could they possibly get a couple pair of good bankers that would agree to play on the 10 footer for a tournament match and would that cause a lot of *****ing by other players?

I dont have a solution but as i said-I think they need to do something.

I love Sunny's posts.

...and yeah, I almost went this year, but I too was worried about whether the lighting and
camera angle would be flattering or not. :embarrassed2:

Nice post

Great post and review.

Those Cyclops balls are made with the traditional (standard) colors now. Maybe they should just realize thats the way to go and give up on trying to differentiate themselves from the pack unnecessarily.

Again, I always enjoy reading your posts and observations.

I'd much rather watch 16 of the best players in the world go at it on the 10 footer playing ten ball than watch local short stops play bank pool.

The six ball is still green just a different shade, I don't understand all the confusion.

They all have numbers on them don't they?:)

Are there brackets posted anywhere. I watch the streaming when I can, but it would sure be nice to see some brackets to determine how others are doing and look at the big picture.

I would love to watch this event ,,the whole thing. But I can't pay $90 to do it. SAD!!

It's fun hearing about it though.

I'm sure it's Accu-Stat that wants all the bigfoot matches for CD's. No dead money matches and all matches are like semi or finals from a big tournament. Johnnyt

I like that. Going to try to use it, because for some reason, I have come close to screwing this up more than a few times...

I do the opposite but probably for the same reason.

Sunnyone, the reason people line up on the bottom of the ball is that when you look at a sphere it can be easy to not line up right..

It's much easier to line up from a flat plane (the table surface) than it is to line up through a sphere with an infinite number of planes.

I do the opposite. I like to use the ball but I want to do two things. I want to make sure my bridge is the same distance from the OB every time (since I use BHE) and I want to make sure I'm lining up from the dead center of the CB.

So what I do is put my tip over the top of the CB directly at the center of the ball. This does pretty much the same thing, because I'm working from a single plane; plus, my bridge is then more guaranteed to be a specific distance from the CB every time.

I have a dot marked on my shaft at the pivot point with a sharpie that I use to place my bridge on the shaft, then I step into the shot with my tip directly over the center of the CB. I apply any side spin from that point and then I can adjust my bridge as necessary.
