Derby, SBE and the IRS

I need to preface this by saying I do not intend to knock anything with this thread only raise the question/awareness of a real possibility.

With the rise of TAR, AZBTV, and InsidePool's ExtremePressbox on the net, a great deal more attention has been brought to the gambling aspect of the game at the Derby and now I see a call for TAR to set up at the SBE.

Now we all know there is plenty of money exchanging hands at these events.

If history tells us anything, with Johnston City as the primary example, the more attention events like this get, the more likely our good friend Uncle Sam will decide to come take a look at what is going on. If that happens=shutdown of the event(s) forever. Bye, bye!

Have Derby and perhaps SBE organizers considered this with the growing attention of these events?

No doubt I want these events to grow by astronomical proportions, but that can not happen if this issue is not addressed ala Johnston City.

The IRS and other government agencies need to clean up their own dirty little houses first. Don't even get me started on those bunch of crooks. Johnnyt

They wound up getting nothing at Johnston City and back then Gambling was looked down on much more than now. Some IRS agents probably had their careers halted by the emabrrassment for no gain.

They know there is no way to collect on an ongoing basis from Pool Players and I doubt they would pursue it in this age.

If the IRS scratched even a lil under the surface, they would soon find out that when its said that 30k was bet on a match, thats not between two people. Thats just two horses running with 25 people actively involved in the bet sitting on sidelines. Once they find out pool players are broke as a joke and their cut of the bet rarely even pays the bills of the trip out to the DCC, they will lose interest. Small money= small hardon for the IRS.

gambling is so hard to audit......and there are so much easier avenues for the IRS to pursue, with alot more money to be had. I dont think anyone needs worry about something bringing the irs in

people need to keep in mind though that its not just about how much money the government stands to win or lose. they have more reasons to bust things. there's a lot of real young kids that witness and participate in the gambling circles that go on at the events. that's reason enough for them to shut it down.

you think the government really cares that barry bonds broke hank aaron's record because he 'cheated'? their real concern is that it sets a bad example for younger kids who may resort to the same tactics because they see their heroes doing it.

that's just my two cents.

and furthermore, what if some kid from the valley forge neighborhood spent went home to mom and dad with a broken finger cause he couldnt pay up to some hustler. then mom and dad complain to the VF chamber of commerce or their local politician...and the rest is history.

believe me, i hope things can continue to go on as is. but there's a certain risk involved that people need to be aware of, yet seem to be taking for granted.

IRS not too worried about it

There are at least a couple private poker games operating weekly in Alabama alone that will draw more $$$ than the entire Derby City event. I believe the IRS and law enforcement efforts in this country should be focused on far more important matters than either of these.

It has also been said before that for every individual in the U.S. to be audited would take the U.S. government 30+ years. This does not take into account auditing business, this is personal finance only based upon the number of government auditors: general population.

LOL...when is the last time you saw a kid get his finger broken because he couldn't pay a "hustler"? I have been around the action side of the game for 20 years and can count the acts of violence related to action disputes on 1 hand. In all honesty I think MORE people need an attitude adjustment in order to clean up the BS and bad actors in the action world.

People need to forget the "Thumbs" scene from the Hustler. It just doesn't happen.

In all honesty I do not worry about the IRS. Pool action is so low on their list as to be invisible. How much is wagered online in a single hour in the US? I would bet evrything I own that it is more than changes hands across a pool table in an entire year. The thing that raises the hair on the back of my neck is 4 guys with ski masks and shotty's coming to DCC or Valley Forge to make a withdrawal.
