Describe the sound.....

My cue ???

Have you ever seen it? The Maple Cue of Ecthelion, glimmering like a spike of Maple and Ivory, its glory caught high in the morning breeze. Have you ever been called home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets?

Oh I knew I would get some goofy responses. I'm surprised at the ancient mythology surrounding many of yalls sticks. I like to think of mine as Odins spear crafted by Vulcans apprentice Jeff Olney. It sounds like a cash register ringing up and a feint hint off dollar bills spring from the tip. Kepp em coming. I never knew pool hall junkies had such creative minds. :p:p:p

Cue flashback music - In 1993 or 1994 I waltzed into my kitchen looking for something to chew on. As I opened up my refrigerator door I discovered someone had jammed some grapes and a couple of cans of soda (pop) in a shelf and shut the door such that when the door opened, they all came sprawling out. I did my very best with my lightning quick reflexes (hey, this is a flashback) to catch the drinks in their carrier with one hand while grabbing the grapes with the other. Yeah, some grapes were lost, but I didn't ruin the batch. More importantly, I didn't hurt my back with all the gyrations.

As I was congratulating myself, I realized the grapes and the cans of soda were strategically placed to provide support for an unbalanced cantaloupe. With both hands filled with ejected groceries, I watched in horror as the cantaloupe decided to roll slowly out of the refrigerator and dive gracefully to the floor. The canteloupe landed heavily, but not with a splat, crash or bounce, but with a solid yet muted thud.

That's what my tip sounds like.

Ever see the scene in the movie When Harry Met Sally where Meg Ryan does her fake orgasm? Well, that's the sound my cue makes. I think only Tads make this sound.

Your cue makes on impact with the CB and what type of cue /tip you play with. Inquiring minds want to know.

This is an interesting request, and it is very difficult to answer because many people do not fully understand what creates the sound when a cue ball is struck by the cue tip.

When the tip strikes the cue ball an immediate vibration begins that travels the entire length of the cue stick at the speed of sound, then once the vibration reaches the cues bumper it reverses and travels back toward the tip. When the vibration reaches the cues tip you hear the sound, and this is also why when there is something loose anywhere on a cue the sound will appear to come from the front of the shaft.

If nothing is loose and all area's of construction are securely fastened the sound produced will have an almost musical pitch, if something is loose the sound produced will be an off key cracked pitch. A cues tip can also make sounds that are different based upon the tips hardness, the harder a tip is the more of glass sound the tip will make which is similar to a phenolic tip striking a cue ball.

I own a pool room, and I can hear a cue with problems from across the room, if a cue is making a cracked sound separate the shaft and the cues butt. Start by holding the shaft firmly and tapping it on a hard surface, then reverse side you tapped and do it again, if you here no cracked sound tap the cues butt in the same manner.

Hope this helps

On a good hit, it sounds like a crystal bell with a clapper made of the Hope Diamond suspended on a fine gold chain. On a bad hit, it sounds like Homer Simpson: D'oh!

Really. I'm super cereal.

If you want to amplify any sort of "metallic" sound... tink, ping, clank, whatever you might call that noise that I can't personally stand - remove your bumper.

I once had the "clapper". I played with it so much, it made my hands sore ;)!!!

Of course, it worked a whole lot better once I screwed a bulb into it !!!
