Details on AZB room at Derby City

For those that don't want to wade through hundreds of posts on the "sticky" thread.

Assuming our pledged money will arrive, we will have a private AZB room at DCC this year; which will have a private, non-coinop, 9ft. table for the round-the-clock enjoyment of the contributors. A $20 donation gets you playing privileges on the table. Non-contributors may also get in the room for watching or socializing, but they must let me know ahead of time so I can get them on the list (or seek me or OldHasBeen out at the tournament and we will get you on the list, and get you a pass into the room). To play, however, requires an advance contribution - PM me soon if you are interested.

When the pro's are there, the table will be a "challenge the pro" table. When they are not there, it will be a challenge table with a list (#1 plays #2, then #2 plays #3, then #3 plays #4, and so on), so unless the room is empty, no one will be playing more than 2 matches in a row. The games will be 9ball race to 3, onepocket race to 2, straight pool to 50 points, full rack banks race to 1, short rack banks race to 2, 8-ball race to 2. The player "at the table" decides on the game. Wagers will be whatever the 2 players agree on, but $5, $10, and $20 wagers are encouraged.

Things are progressing well. We have commitments from Sarah Rousey and Alice Rim to do an hour of challenges apiece. Corey Deuel has said he will try to drop by and play some challenges. We have a commitment from Jeanette Lee and George Breedlove to play the winners of our raffle. Two lucky AZB members will pair up with the pro's in a doubles match - possibly on the television table. We have a commitment from Grady Mathews to do a one hour seminar. Willie Jopling will appear, maybe play some Irish billiards challenges (I think he may be above average in this department). Charlie Bryant and Dee Adkins MAY appear for challenges - we're hopeful. Tom Simpson has offered to do a mini-clinic on jumping.

Sizl has completed a large banner and 2 smaller banners (one for pro signatures, one for AZB member signatures). Jack Justis is GIVING US a beautiful case for us to give away to one lucky contributor. Drawing will be Thursday of DCC, all contributors are in the pool, we'll send it to you if you're not there.

We are definitely required to have room monitors, so each day will be split into 4 shifts (MN to 6 AM, 6 AM to noon, noon to 6 PM, 6 PM to MN), starting at MN on the first Friday. Randi Mathews will be doing ALL the noon to 6 PM shifts. Semperfi will keep the key at his booth for all of the 6 PM to MN shifts - contributors may sign out the key for as long as they like, but they are monitoring the room while they have the key. This means we have most of the tournament-viewing time covered, and we only need volunteers for the 12 hour period from MN to noon - which is PRIME ACTION TIME at DCC. I'm doing MN to 6 AM on Thurs, and 6 AM to noon on the last Friday. Players that can't do a whole shift should plan on relieving Randi occasionally, or pairing up with another person to split a shift (please do it by PM between yourselves - I don't think I can juggle it, just let me know when it is accomplished).

We're not yet sure we have any extra funds for refreshments.

I will be providing official nametags which you can pick up at the room. It will list your real name and your screen name; and it will serve as your admission ticket to the room and the table. NO ONE PLAYS WITHOUT AN OFFICIAL NAME TAG (unless he's a pro, or unless he's bigger and tougher than zeeder or OHB ). The room monitor will have the nametags, and can give you yours if you have proper ID. For those that haven't been, the DCC gives you a picture I.D./pass that has your real name printed prominently on it; so it's no big invasion of privacy for us to do the same.

Members planning on socializing (and not contributing) should let me know, and I will get them a non-player nametag.

Semperfi will keep the key at his booth from 6 PM til MN every day. With Randi monitoring from noon till 6 PM every day we now have complete room coverage during the peak viewing hours for spectators.

This means we only need coverage from MN til noon each day - that seems feasible (since those are the PEAK PLAYING TIMES at DCC). Semperfi will keep the key until the Sunday morning (1-15-05) at which time he will close the room for us.

I can't wait.
I hope semperfi drinks beer cause Imma buy him one! He's helping out tremendously by agreeing to be the keeper of the key & making sure it gets into the right hands and then turned back into the right hands!

Cheers Semperfi, you've got a beer or two headed your way. Thanks dude! ;)

My check is in the mail!!!

Sorry I couldn't resist. It really did go out today. I couldn't come down there and not get the chance to play some of these people we hang out with. Just wouldn't be right. If Semperfi don't drink, I'll take care of his. I'll buy him one too, and if he don't want it, I'll drink that one too. Gonna be a great week. Sam

You haven't received mine yet, huh? I sent it last Thursday or so I think. By the way, are you setting a cut-off date? I have a friend who lurks who might contribute if there's still time.

For the Justis case giveaway... does the winner need to be present at the name drawing?

I would like to help the cause and get all the benefits, but don't know how long I can be at the tourney (if at all...).

Also... please PM me the PayPal address so I can donate...

Another update (first post is amended to reflect current conditions):

Willie Jopling will appear (hopefully show us some trick shots); and has challenged the whole city in Irish billiards (OHB and I want to try him).

Sizl has 3 banners on the way.

Jack Justis has GIVEN us a case to GIVE AWAY to one lucky contributor. Drawing at DCC Thursday from among all contributors.

Working on a couple of HUGE names to play challenges.

Just a little worried about the number of contributors (about 70 so far - and I'm STILL GETTING E-MAILS from interested members). Is one table really going to be enough for this many players (even with their attendance being spread out)???????????? I guess if it's too crowded we will learn, and perhaps have more tables next year (or limit participation next year). It is OBVIOUS that people want to PLAY NOT JUST WATCH. This could be fun.

May have to limit the time.

On the races, in one pocket and banks, we may have to have a time limit to go along with it. Or a limit on how many times you can sign to play during the peak periods. Just a thought! Merry Christmas all..... Sam:)

I talked to Greg Sullivan yesterday about the Louie Roberts award voting, and he mentioned something about adding another table in one of the other rooms in that hallway. So maybe there will be two?

I am still wondering if we have to be present for the Justis case giveaway to win it. I will not be there on Thursday....

Another update (first post is amended and current):

$1330 collected so far.

Linda Carter and Mike Zimmerman will not be able to make it.

Someone is working on Dee Adkins to play challenges (former DCC All-Around Champ).

Tom Simpson has volunteered a mini-clinic on jumping.

Looks like quite a group! I was going to go through some old posts from those members I am a little sketchy on but WHEW the list gets long. Really looking forward to meeting people on the challenge table hopefully some of the one pocket specialists will not be reluctant to show some speed for the benefit of us spectators.

On another topic

Now that is one fantastic offer from Jack Justis!!

Cheers everyone this should be a blast

I agree on both parts! No offense to anyone but I REALLY hope that I win that case!! :p

I'm looking forward to meeting those of you that I haven't had the pleasure of meeting in person yet and as always, I'm looking forward to seeing those of you that I've already met. I always have a great time at tournaments & a lot of you folks are the reason for that. I've no doubt that Derby is going to be an awesome time!

Another update (first post is amended again):

More contributions.

We will have to cut off enrollment very soon if we are to have time to get nametags done, and refreshments/prizes arranged.

P.S. - Yes, Timberly, we will cover the postage for sizl's banners.

Put me down for $25. Either PM or email me with the Paypal address (if that works) or a mailing address for a check. Thanks....Joe

Thanks question betting man. (LOL, I'm not as creative w/names as you are). I just kinda figured that was the least we could do. ;) I'll split the autograph duty with you on the directional for sizl. Also, I'll be there later Friday evening & I'll be looking for you & OHB to see if any help is needed with anything. I'm really looking forward to this and I know that I can speak for all when I say that we're very grateful to both you & OHB for all that you've done to get this organized. ;) Thanks!

If this case has wheels - There is gonna be a fight.

I think you've won enough here lately..... I need that case!! :p

I really want a case with wheels and I see that some Justis cases have them. You can't believe what I have done to my regular case. I went to Home Depot and bought 4 wheels, screwed them on a piece of wood and attached it to the bottom of the case. It works pretty well but is a little nosey and too unsightly.

Nope, never made one with wheels and don't plan on it. You have me confused with J & J. The case I am donating is this one.

Looks real nice Jack--sort of a cue pouch! What will we have to do to have a shot at it?

jazz-man,
I think JJ's idea was to have a drawing from among all the contributors (including the ones who are not attending). If they are not present, the organizers will mail the case to them. If Jack changes his mind on the format, we'll do whatever he suggests.

Please, everyone stop by the Justis booth and check out both the case and his other wares. We are very appreciative of the gift.
