Diabetic troubles and trying to play pool....

Hi there,

I know many of you out there are diabetic and love to play this game.
Bad things happen to us that the average person can't even imagine. When the blood sugar goes to high it's bad. When it goes to low it's bad. Most of the time you can't tell unless you check it with a meter which way it is. Then it might not even be to high or low but you didn't get your usual 8 hours of sleep. Or maybe you just didn't get enough excersize the day before. Or even a little stress can screw up the mix.

Whatever the reason you don't feel quite right it's a juggling act with trying to feel normal. It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be a cure for this disease but we just have to do the best that we can do to control it.

I'm going to share a pool disaster here and I know that anyone that is diabetic will understand. I'm not looking for sympathy but I know there are many players that are diabetic and I hope you will share your stories here also. In a years time all diabetics could probably write a book with all the things they have went through trying to deal with the issues related to diabetes and trying to play pool or just life in general.

The players that aren't diabetic maybe can get a little insight on what goes on with us diabetics.

My day started out as usual for your typical pool player that travels on the road playing and giving lessons. I havn't played for about 10 days because I don't have much time between traveling here and there giving lessons and living out of a motel room. And the more lessons you give the less energy you have to practice. 3 lessons in one day and I'm toast. 2 and I'm pretty tired. Like a normal day of work where you just want to sit in your recliner and take it easy.

I had given a lesson the night before. It was the 2nd one that day. This one got over by 2:00am in the morning. I have another one at 10:00am so I have to get back to my room which will take an hour and then by the time I get to sleep it will be about 3:30am. If I get up by 8:30am I can make it to my lesson which is an hour away. This only gives me about 5 1/2 hours of sleep but that's OK because at least I can still function. I'll just really be wore out by the end of the day and feel like crap most of the day.

Get done with the lesson and go to the next poolhall for the next one at 2:00 and the guy doesn't show up. I try calling his cell phone and at the same time I call him a phone starts ringing in the poolroom. It was his phone. He forgot it on a table in the poolroom the night before. How funny.

About an hour later he shows up and says he didn't get his check so he couldn't do it.

So I called one of the 10 other players that I'm trying to coordinate a time with and 2 of them say they might be able to get there. So I wait about 2 hours but they can't get there. I'm kind of getting real tired now.

I go get something to eat because I got another lesson at 7 PM about 1 hour away. He's going to be late from work so I head back to the poolroom that I was at to see if anyone showed up.

When I walked in the owner said there was 2 guys from Texas looking for a game. I havn't played at all for about a week and would like a little action to kind of sharpen up my stroke. I call my 7:00 lesson to tell him I have a game and he tells me he has to work late anyway so it's a good thing I called.

We match up playing even and the guy plays real good. There's nobody there that can stay with him and I know I have to play my top game to win. But after the first set I can see that my top game if I can get there should get the job done.

I play the first set for 100 race to 9, 9 ball to feel the guy out. I could see he could play. I tried to not show much and was not too concerned about winning this first one because I was certain with my gray hair and the way I'm playing this first set that they will be begging me to bet higher.

I lose the first set 9-7 and watched as my opponent missed some shots on purpose thinking I can't play.

We raised the bet the second set and as I thought they asked me to bet more right away. I came out of my stall as good as I could but I missed some shots mostly because I hadn't played for about 10 days. I lost this set on the hill.

We start the next one and I realize I'm hungry so I order a pizza with John at the poolhall and the owner was supposed to call it in. He forget for some reason. This will come into play about an hour later.

I'm playing the next set and know I have to play all out to win. During this set I order a diet mountain dew from the owner. I don't see real good close up unless I use my glasses. He gave me a regular mountain dew. I only drank half of it before I noticed but the diabetics out there know what this did to my blood sugar, body and brain. Not good.

I win the set 9-6. They know they have a tough game now and want to pull up. I guess their doing what their supposed to do on the road. If someone shows some pretty good speed their supposed to quit.

Finally the backer asks me to play a set for 500. I told him we should bet 1000. He said no.

After about 15 minutes they decide to play some more.

We start the next set and I'm ahead 3-1. It's looking pretty good. I'm starting to get real hungry so I go up to the bar to find out why the pizza isn't there yet. He say he forgot to order it. I'm starting to shake a little inside from my blood suger too low so I did the only thing I could and got a candy bar and ate a little. Even though this will bring it up a little it's not the best thing for a diabetic to do.

Between not playing for 10 days, drinking half a regular mountain dew,not eating about 2 hours past when I should, my game started to melt down.

I missed just enough to lose the next set.

Now when these guys were going to pull up earlier after I won a set they had told me they were in a local motel. They had said that we could play the next day. I remembered this because i was thinking this might not be a bad idea. But when your diabetic and your blood sugar is out of wack you don't always think as good as you should either. Your brain just kind of takes the nap.

We started the next set and I got down on the first shot and I knew kind of that it was over for me for the night. I tried to play 2 more games but I couldn't even make a ball. My heart was racing and I felt dizzy and I thought I was going to pass out.

I'm down 3 - 0 and I turned to the guy I'm playing and told him that we would have to finish the set tomorrow. I thought seeing as they told me that they would play tomorrow before that this would not be a problem.

They guy I was playing was a real nice guy. The backer just jumped up in my face and acted like I'm trying to pull something. He sqwuaks out , my guys hitting a gear so you want to pull up. On the contrary he would have lost all 3 of those games if I could have made 2 balls in a row. Right now I couldn't of beat my sister and she can't even play.

The guy I'm playing tells me he's sorry for the way his backer is acting. He says I know your a real gentleman.

I tell the backer that I will post the set for tomorrow with the owner Harold. Then all of a sudden he tells me they aren't coming back tomorrow. That they have to drive to far to their room. One hour I didn't know this or I wouldn't even have suggested that we finish it tomorrow. But I don't think an hour drive is too far but that's me.

Anyway I finished the set and lost 9-1. The only reason I won one game is he hung a 9 ball.

The backer came over woofing a little again. he's all happy and got his little money. I asked him if the drive back over hear would be too far to freeze up $5000. He said call him when I wake up and he'd come over if i wanted to play. I told him I'll want to play for sure.

I'm going to call him in a few minutes here and see if they will come back. I don't think they will but maybe.

I did so many thing wrong yesterday for a diabetic that's going to play pool. The good news is I only lost $500. The other good news is I know my top game is better than his. The only factor here is whether I can get there and stay there with the little bit of playing I did yesterday. The diabetic meltdown doesn't matter today. That was yesterday. I feel pretty good today and I'll make sure I have the right food with me all the time to control my suger level.

I know the diabetic pool players out there have experienced many of these things themselves. Whether it be league play of just playing your buddy for $5 bucks. When we're not right we're not right and there is no magic pill to make it right. We just have to weather the storm and get some sleep and try to get the next day under control.

The sad news is if you don't keep this blood sugar thing under control eventually they have to start cutting stuff off because it dies like toes, feet and legs. Kidneys go bad and then there is dialasis. Some of my friends are diabetic and I know some of them are trying really hard to do everything right and have already had things amputated and some are going through dialasis.

The only high profile players that I know are diabetic are Larry Nevel and Shawn Putnam. I hope they don't care that I mention they're diabetic on here but they go through all of the same things.

It's tough to go to a tournament and spend 1000 in entry fees and motels, travel and then get knocked out because you feel terrible even though sometimes you did everything right that you could to control it. All you can do is just do the best you could do.

In fact when I told my doctor that I was going to go on the road teaching pool and playing tournaments he flat out told me that it was a bad idea because I'm diabetic.

Anyway, could the diabetics out there tell some of their stories here. It might even help some of us trying to cope with this. There might be some slick little things some of us do to make things a little easier. Share these things with us. We will never have it Perfect but at least we can do all we possibly can to keep it the best we can.

Life and quality of life is so important. Diabetics struggle everyday to try to keep that quality each day. Everyday is a new little mini battle to stay the best we can be. :angel2:

Please share some stories.... Thanks Geno......

Sarah Rousey is diabetic as well.

Sarah is a good friend of mine and her story is a great one. I wish she would share it.

OK Geno I'm not diabetic. But occasionally my sugar does run a little low and I get the DT's. I eat a little and I'm fine. It's usually from not eating when I should.

Now on to the story. I shoot international indoor smallbore (22 rimfire) 3 position rifle. I'm at the Palmyra invitational. One of the biggest indoor matches anywhere in the US. I'm shooting the standing segment. My sugar bottoms out just after I started. Time limits don't allow eating. Can't restart later so You just have to continue. I'm trying to hit a dot slightly bigger than the dot at the end of this sentance, at 50 feet, standing with a 14.5# rifle with open sights. And I'm shaking like a leaf. Eyes are starting to go to pot from low sugar. I feel like doo-doo. I still shot a 156 out of 200. Which is up near my best. I still can't figure it out. I was really concentrating and shooting the shots on the fly. What a hoot that was.

I know how you feel. I'm glad it worked out for you. It sure is an insidious disease. I have had freinds with it. It can kill if you are not careful. I'll give you my blessings and hope for a cure.

Being diabetic is nothing to play games with. If you do play games and not take the disease seriously.

You could loose big time, and the looses could be partial loss eye sight, being blind, heart attach, death, amputations, etc.

I do not know if you are a Type I or Type II Diabetic, but you have to eat right, you have to test blood sugar regurally, and keep the blood sugar in a range your medical provider wants, you need to take you medication, be it pill, or the needle, and you need regular sleep.

my dad is diabetic and we play on the same 8-ball team, the only trick he has for when his eyes start acting funny is he gets a baseball cap, either from me or another team mate. he claims that it helps tunnel vision his sights towards the shot and cuts down on glare coming from the lights, etc...

Geno, I have reactive hypoglycemia. For those of you out there that don't know what that is here ya go, hypoglycemia is low blood sugar. You hear that and think all you need to do is get more sugar. Nothing could be further from the truth. What happens is eating sugar, simple carbs etc... causes the body to produce too much insulin which drives the glucose levels down. Very simplified explanation but you get the idea.

Geno, I've encountered panic attacks that had me wanting to jump right out of my skin, during a tournament. The only thing I could do was eat and hope it straightened out. I know exactly what you're feeling, man. We're on opposite ends but at the end is the same result.

You seem to be trying to control your sugar so I'm just going to lay this out here for you and you can do with it what you like. There is a book called "The Low Blood Sugar Handbook" that you can pick up for about 10 bucks. Here's a link to Amazon if you're interested.

Although the title is "Low Blood sugar" the information inside is perfect for diabetics too. It shows a diet regimen to follow to keep yourself straight. I don't know about you but I thought I knew a lot about this stuff. After reading the book and trying the stuff they were talking about, and after about 3 or 4 days of following their diet advice, my head was clearer than it had ever been since I was a kid.

I would recommend checking it out. You can spend 5 grand on a game of pool you surely can afford to drop 10 bucks to change your life.

Please let me know if you check into it and try what they say and how you feel.

Geno,

Thanks for sharing your story. I have high blood glucose and went for a long time as an undiagonsed diabetic. My pool game suffered, I had mood swings and didn't know why. I would get so darn irritated with people over anything. I was ready to give up on pool.

I started on Insulin and Metformin in September and things are some better. The best thing I did was get a meal plan designed by a registered dietician. I had to learn how many carbs (not just sugar) were in the foods I eat and that I cook with (yes the way we cook something can change the way your body's blood glucose reacts to it).

When my Blood Glucose gets over 200 I get a tension headache when it gets below 75 I get dizzy. I can recognize the symptoms now. My BG peaks between 1 and 2 hours after I eat and is back under 150 within 2 hours if I limit my carb intake at the meals to 90 carbs or less. If I go over it can screw it up. Sometimes I skip a meal and my liver releases stored glucose and at lunch time, when I skip breakfast, my blood glucose is around 170-200. Then once that's gone it will drop like a rock.

I had to find out how many carbs my body can deal with per meal and then always pair my carbs with protein and fat to level out the BG spike.

Diabetes is a personalized disease, you have to treat it according to the individual and everyone is different.

It can physically mess you up for sure, but it can also play havoc with your emotions and stress can effect it which can impact how we eat or don't eat. It can be a vicious cycle.

There are many times when I get upset because I play poorly when I know that if I felt right I would be running out but I can't tell from one day to the next how I will feel or how well I will shoot. As you've already mentioned, we can go from shooting lights out to not being able to make the most simple shots.

With that said, it's just another challenge in life. We have to deal with it, mange it if we can't overcome it.

Thanks again for sharing your story.

Sarah Rousey is diabetic as well.

Sarah is a Type 1 diabetic. It is much more important for her to follow strict habits because of the need for insulin, but I believe she has a continuous pump, IIRC.

I won't go into the difference in type 1 and 2, but what Geno was discussing applies to both.

I hope to heck he thinks you are a mark and comes back for some real money. You can then control your day, your diet, and your sugar intake and really mess the backer up. Just bring your glasses, read your labels, eat your own food, and don't take any drinks that are already open. I honestly hope it happens and we get a great update post!

i'm not diabetic, however my blood sugar is all over the place, and when it gets too low or high it has a huge impact on how I play, especially when it gets too low. I cant imagine how difficult and what a pain in the arse being type 1 diabetic is-My dad was-Brutal.

I`m diabetic also. The night I found out I was diabetic I had played 4 $500 sets (won) and wasn`t feeling well after I got home so I went to the hospital(4am).My sugar was 456.I was in the hospital for 5 days.I don`t ever get headaches but when my sugar gets high the balls get blury and I tend to have a short temper that I can`t control.I have told people I gamble with that I don`t mean it if I get mad,I just cant control it sometimes.I have gotten the shakes when it is low and I very seldom get more than 6 hours sleep and usually wake up 3-4 times during that 6 hours.I do notice that the longer I play the better I feel and I try not to eat before or during playing.I can play 10+ hours without any problems but if I eat during that time I feel horrible.I`m going back to the doctor tommorrow so I hope to change meds.I`m trying to get it under control since I`m only 42yrs old.

I'm a type 1 on an insulin pump and what has been said is 100%
on the money for me ... I get mad for no "REAL" reason and have a heck of a time seeing and trying to play pool when I am low or very high .
I check myself with the meter all the time when I'm playing , at least every hour...This helps alot ...

End of the story.........

Hi there everyone.

I wish I had a happy ending but it is what it is. I called the backer right after I made the post. I left him a message telling him i went to the bank and was posting the $5,000 at Bama Billiards club. I called Harold, the owner and asked him if that was OK with him. He said he had a no problem with that.

I wanted them to know if they drove back for the hour drive that they could win some money.

He told me that they would be busy for a couple of days. He knew i was leaving here soon. I told him that I meant what I said and they would have some good action. He said maybe in 4 or 5 days. I replied that I was leaving in 3 days.

Then I got thinking. I called Wisconsin and made a change in my plans. I need to call Bill Rousey and tell him I'll be a few days later to get to Memphis. So I called them back to tell them I'd play in 4 or 5 days.

He declined. Then I told him I'd even come to whereever they were at in 4 or 5 days and play at their favorite spot.

I guess I saw their true colors when I won the second set that we had raised the bet from 100. They didn't really want to play anymore than and almost quit.

I'm usually pretty careful about how I take care of myself but I know I need to know more. Sometimes I seem to do everything right but it's still not right.

Today I'm still wrecked. Just like a normal person that stays up all night and doesn't sleep. That's how the comparison is to a diabetic that just doesn't quite get enough. Now it takes a day or 2 to feel decent again.

Back to the drawing board. The good news is I gave 2 lessons today and I have 3 set up for tomorrow.

I love to play but the teaching is so rewarding.

Each day is a new adventure.

Thanks everyone for the good advice. Good night.............
