I don't know about your reasoning Glen... Just offering another opinion.
Perhaps:
There are cigarette burns on all the rails of 8 and 9 foot carom tables cause the players don't care. The slate seams are showing through the cloth cause the players and/or room owner does not care about the equipment. The tables are all slow cause the cloth is the wrong cloth, or was not installed right. Again, a function of who the room owner hired to do the job, or how much he was willing to spend.
I think its more a player problem than an equipment problem.
I'm all for this idea, don't get me wrong. I'm just offering another possibility as to why the equipment in many straight rail rooms is bad.
