Dickie Neighbors is in the hospital!

I had an appointment at the VA today so I stopped in to see Dickie while I was over there. He looked a little rough, he's been through a lot lately. His kidneys still haven't resumed function and it's been about 10 days since he's had a bowel movement. That's enough to make anyone miserable. He said they gave him a laxative today and now he's afraid to fart. His back is giving him a lot of trouble and pain as well as the gout in his feet. They've told him he'll have to go from the hospital to a Veterans nursing home for convalescence and rehab before going home which pissed him off. He'd prefer to go to his brothers house but his brother lost both of his hands many years ago and will probably not be a lot of help in the way of taking care of Dickie while he recuperates. He still has a pretty good fight ahead of him but Dickie is a tough old bird and my money is on him eventually getting back on his feet and back to work. He's at his happiest when he's building cue and modifying equipment to do so. Let's all keep him in our prayers!

thanks for the heads up, I hope his kidneys fire up and are 100% soon. thats serious stuff. And one thing in medicine i'm not up to speed on. the discs in his back are a huge source of pain but are not a danger to his health, i'd be dead if that was the case. I really hope he bounces back fast and gets home fast, and remembers to stay wet.

My mom got dehydrated one time, I didnt let that happen again there is a solution for that: I kept a log of her I & O's(in's and out's), you measure how much water is consumed and pissed, thats a very important thing to know, I cant remember what % goes out 85% I think(i'm guessing here) the other 15% is evaporation thru your skin, etc. Its a indication of how well your functioning.

my very best to Mr.Neighbors, I hope he is home very soon. Its brutal to go thru that. I understand it all to well.

sincerly

Sherm,

Any update on Dickie?

I'm not Sherm...

Dick was moved to a local nursing-home type facility several days ago.

I wish I had better news. He has a protruding disk in his back. This might
be the cause of his problems. No one seems to know.

It is from an old injury some 35 years ago, perhaps it has slipped worse
this time? He had a similar incident about a year ago, but with medication,
improved greatly in a few days. They never did determine just what was
the cause of his problem last time. His current symptoms are somewhat
similar in nature, though much worse this time around

He can only barely get around with a walker, and that seems to cause
severe pain in his feet and legs - can't do even the most basic phys-rehab.

He seems to be in good sprits, considering. Of course, he is very frustrated.
I don't know how he does it.

Hope for the best.

Dale

Modern medical procedures are quite amazing. Someone I know recently had a fusion of c3 to c7 , all are linked with some new technology using Ti components to tie it all together untill it finally fuses.
He said what he has had done ,was a new procedure out here anyway.
4 weeks after the surgery, he is now walking around, somewhat cautiously.
There may be a possibility that this type of thing could be used for conditions similar to Dicks, but I am not a medical Doctor.Just a survivor of a broken neck for 26 years.

Dick is about 1,000,000% better than he was Wednesday night.

He is improving, but it is still serious. His nurse assured me
last night(Thurs), that his kidney function should return to normal.
He was severely de-hydrated due to a sore throat where he couldn't
even swallow water.

Think you have problems? When the ER nurse ask what medications he
took, Dick calmly replied "I take about 20 pills a day"

Dale

Any word on how he is? This post actually scared me because the same swallowing issue happened with my aunt and turns out it was esophegeal cancer.
Obviously I pray this isn't the case here but someone might want to tell him to get checked. A lot of times the symptoms are overlooked and it's too late.

Koop - wishing a speedy and full recovery

Finally some good news.

The phone rang about 3:30 this afternoon - Dick says "Dalebert, what are you doing."

He had been to the Doctor at the VA and needed to be picked up.

There was MUCHO improvement from just 2 days ago. Today he could stand on his own
and even climb in and out of the van's front seat. Compared to Tues evening when
I thought he should be back in the ER - this was very encouraging.

He still has a long way to go, but in seems at least he's on the right path.

That's GREAT NEWS, Thanks for the update. It's great to know that he's hanging it there and finally getting back to his normal self a bit. Let him know we are still pulling and praying for him.

Great news
I was just thinking of giving him a call. He's finishing up a Davis blank for me and last I talked to him he want feeling too hot and was just thinking of how he was doing. Apparently he was in a little more serious shape than he alluded to when we spoke two weeks ago.

Dale; thanks for being there for Dickie. We all appreciate you helping him out right now. I know he needs the help.

Any acts of kindness we do towards another will not go unrewarded.

Thanks again,

Arnot

Thanks for the kind words Arnot.

A few here know, it would take an hour for me to just tell about
all the things Dick has done for me over the years . And I'm a pretty
fast talker.

Dale

Great News, been wondering how he was doing, and very happy to hear of the improvement. Thanks for the Update.

Dale, I just gotta say that Your a good friend to be there when He needed You most. That's a rare breed in this day and age. I'm sure he's backed up from being down, Hopefully he doesn't over do things, or move too quickly trying to catch up, and takes It a little easier for a while. I know that's sometimes easier said then done though.

Spoke with Richard a few hours ago. He's in a rest home till Friday I believe he told me. He's still in pain, but he said that he's getting better every day and seemed to be in pretty darn good spirits considering everything he has gone through lately. Hopefully the progress keeps coming for him. He definitely seemed like he was itching to get out of there and back to work.

Dickie neighbors

Hope you get better soon dan axe old school petes

I'm glad to read that Dick is recovering slowly, and I hope he get as close to 100% as he can. Since English is not my native language, I can't follow all medical terms but it sounds serious!
Dick has helped me many times up here and is for sure a resource for us all so I cross my fingers and hope he's able to get back to our little community some time for good debates and sharing his wisdome.

Just checking in on Dickie...
any new updates Dale?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

Yes, he's doing better. He's at home now, actually his brothers place, but he's still got some recuperating to do. He's anxious to get back in the shop but it's not going to happen overnight.
