Did I really just hear Deno say that?!!

I know i'll probably get some flack from some of you saying that i'm just once again bashing the IPT, but i'm sitting here watching the Rodney Morris vs. Charlie Bryant match from the last IPT tournament and Deno actually has the nerve to sit there and say that he had "dished out" over $15,000 in dress code violation fines to the players throughout the week. At one point he says that he gave Ronnie Wiseman a $1000 for just walking into the arena to check the score board wearing a short sleeve shirt (according to Deno, players arent even allowed to dress down when they are just spectators). I find this absolutely ridiculous and just one more reason to be infuriated with the IPT and its operations. Dont get me wrong, I have NO problem with dress codes and even having fines for violating them, but the failure to pay the players PROMPTLY (I come from the position that they were owed their money when it was said that it would be payed, not in payments over a two year period) is absolutely ridiculous, especially when considering they were fining players like that. Ok avid IPT supporters, go ahead and bash me.

I guess his trying to raise the bar for a pool tournament....is just like in NBA ...players can't wear casual wear anymore or else they will be suspended or fine ..his putting POOL in the map right now...i guess there's nothing wrong w/ the dress code.. just my .02 :)

There's nothing wrong with the dress code. But there's no dress code for spectators, even in the NBA.

I completely agree about the dress code, like I said, I have absolutely NO complaint or problems with it. But remember, the players in the NBA get paid their earnings in a timely manner.

There was also the players lounge - you could also be fined for being in the players lounge at the wrong time.

Deno was spot on about the dress code, although he did seem to take it a bit too far, and it was mostly directed towards the men, not the women. It was a great idea to have the players dress appropriately and looking nice at the extravagant venues that the IPT provided. However, when you start handing out fines like you are the IPT fashion Gestapo, sooner or later you will have morale problems - and the players will start to resent you.

I'm all for the IPT's dress code, but I am also all for "warnings" on the first violation.

i think all he was trying to do was stress the point that the dress code is being enforced, and no blind eyes were going to be turned to it. which a lot of pool players are probably used to in other tournaments.

one thing i do disagree with with the dress code is not being able to wear short sleeved shirts. at the end of the day that interferes with how you play the game which is not fair. jam was saying about how keith had problems due to his sidearm stroke too.

i actually struggle to play in long sleeves no matter how great the shirt is, it just irritates me. likewise i can't play with a watch on either wrist.

and as sexist as it is i suppose it's to be expected the women will get away with a few dress code violations and if i'm honest, it doesnt bother me. i would be very disappointed if deno told jasmin ouschan or jeanette to cover up!

Geezy peezy. All IPT competitors were instructed at EACH and EVERY players meeting, at the start of EACH and EVERY event, about the dress code, especially the men. They were told ALWAYS wear their suit jackets, collared shirts, leather shoes when in the TOURNAMENT room, even when they were not competing.

Warnings were given left and right in Vegas about some players showing up not in their IPT attire.

What was the straw that hit the camel's back was when on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. in Vegas, when the checks were being handed out for the tournament winnings, MANY -- and I mean MANY -- IPT competitors scrambled downstairs for one purpose and one purpose only, to collect their checks.

Even though the finals was about to commence, with a full room of spectators, these IPT players showed up in sweatpants, short-sleeved Polo shirts, T-shirts, and the like, only wanting to get paid and not caring about their attire.

The women could have walked in there naked, though, and not received any fine. I found that quite discriminatory towards the IPT men.

The big issue when playing this game is being comfortable. NOBODY is 100% comfortable in long sleeves (although Stevie Moore wears long sleeves all the time - perhaps he is an exception).

The NBA players are required to dress appropriately when entering and exiting the arena, press conferences, etc. They are not required to play in those suits. lol

For pool, polo shirts, leather shoes, and slacks are fine. Going any further than that for the men and you start messing with their ability to shoot comfortably.

Apparel that makes pool harder:
Uncomfortable shoes
Any kind of jewelry
Ties
Long sleeve shirts
Hats with low brims
Glasses
Over-sized belt buckles
Over-sized clothing (poofy shirts)

None of these should ever be required in a tournament. Naturally I'm only talking about the first few. Not even the PGA requires long sleeves and ties.

I agree. The naked women should be required to RUN.

It is my opinion that a dress code is useless in furthering the promotion of pool and should not be included in any event past the point of making sure the players aren't dressed in a lewd or disruptive manner. T shirts, ballcaps, tennis shoes, warm-ups, etc. are what is worn into battle in pool halls every day, and is exactly how players should be seen by the public.

Deno, the man who would be God. Alas, he turned out to be Dumbo, a baby elephant.

 probably the NBA dress code would be more appropiate - looser. It would be interesting to have a cross over of fashion bwtween NBA and IPT (pool formal officialdom comps). Its already in pool everyday, anyway - basketball or nike or adidas. They just got to put pockets on tshirts low for chalk to fit into. Chalk on the rails is nuts. In the pocket, so easier.
Actually it totally stupid that the majors of fashion labels aren't targeting the 8 or 9 ball crew but then they don't seem to target specific sports anyhow. I also found cargo pants good for chalk as they had a pocket above the knee.

David,

There was a HUGE warning at the Players meeting (mandatory attendance but the players and staff) about the dress code and violations. Most of the players all agreed it was in their best interest.

Deno was very explicit about what was appropriate and where and how much the fines would be levied.

So I would consider this the their first warning.

I attended the players meeting because of the officiating duties I was contracted to perform.
