Did you guys see that skit on women's pro pool on Saturday Night Live?

In the words of Rodney Dangerfield, "They get no respect."

On the one hand, I can see the humor in it and enjoyed the video, but there is something gnawing at me about it in that this is how mainstream America looks at pool.

I hope the WPBA writes them a letter. Why did they have to use Greta's name? There's some hidden knocks about this video that is unsettling to me as a pool enthusiast. Maybe it's because pool is so low on the sports totem pole, it hurts to see it ridiculed in this format on a show like SNL that gets such broad coverage.

Thanks for sharing the link. I'm sure it will get much more positive praise than I'm giving it this morning upon first glance.

So...while I didn't find it terribly funny...I also didn't feel like it was necessarily bashing pool as much as it was bashing the level of commentary that we used to get with pool a few years back. To be honest...I kind of felt like it was "right on" in that department. I remember watching some of those old ESPN matches and thinking, how the heck did these guys get this job?! They had no clue to what was going on! Now I know...

I didnt find it really that funny, wouldve been better off making fun of some of those horrible excuses for billiard movies.

Why did they have to use Greta's name?

Hi, Jenny! Long time, no speak.

I thought I should point out that there isn't a pro player named Greta, and that the similarity to the player's name that you are thinking of was in all likelihood just a coincidence.

Personally, I wish that the skit had a bit more humor in it than it did, but I didn't find it offensive to pool at all. In fact, I'd bet that it would have a positive impact on pool viewership, from an awareness point of view. Imagine if they did a skit like this every week!

Regarding SNL in general, I have to disagree with those who say that SNL isn't funny anymore. Here is just one of a huge number of recent greats: Indoor Gardening Tips with Christopher Walken To each their own, I guess!

Hey, Scott, good to see you posting on the AzBilliards Discussion Forum. I see you've been a member for quite sometime now. You must have been one of those shy lurkers. Hey, you're in good company. There's a lot of industry folk I know who do not post on this forum, though they read it on a daily basis.

I thought the SNL skit did have some funny moments, but it seems to make fun of pool on ESPN. I guess, as others have written, any publicity, whether good, bad, or indifferent, is helpful to pool. :)

I'm not sure if our paths will ever cross again, Scott. I'm on a permanent hiatus from the pool tournament trail. You're fortunate that pool has been good to you. I can't say the same for me. That said, I like reading about the pool adventures of others.

I'm looking into other avenues of recreation. I'm actually seriously considering taking up ballroom dancing, but my partner in life refuses to go with me. I'm not sure why because he's a good dancer but only if it's Barry White. :grin-square:

I thought the Tampax slogans were very funny.

The biggest drawback is that ESPN might remove pool from its programming. I wish they had more, not less.
