if you use a ld shaft
does it matter whos butt you use ??
gus /ob1 vs joss/ob1
only for example
just askin

You're just asking for trouble with that question. Actually, I saw some sort of a demo where a Predator shaft was screwed into a broomstick handle and the Predator shaft shot great. The butt was effectively meaningless.

I prefer big Butts!!!

Just like any sporting equipment, it's all subjective to personal preference, comfort and or added mental confidence. With that I can share from experience in my 16 years of billiard retail, there were countless times where a client of mine purchased an "X" brand LD shaft and put it on a Players, Action and Frank's Center sneaky Pete and swore, for them it played lights out.

To each his own, it's a beautiful thing.

Hope you're doing well Larry!

Cheers,
Mo

100% Yes! Weight, balance, joint, joint pin and woods play a huge part
in a cues overall performance including the shaft or LD shaft.
I think of a cue as an instrument and like all instruments, specially
wooden ones, there's a certain harmonic tone you look for. With cues,
if a cuemaker has the knowledge of wood,he can produce a great cue with
feedback ,tone and feel, strictly attributed to the butt. When I get these
results from a cue,my game definitely shows it.

Different weights and balance points will affect the playing characteristics of a shaft.

Hi Larry , Like Doc , my wife thinks it matters . I personally think Diametor , and cue balance is all the butt does . Take care Jim

No. The butt's main function is to hold the decorations and make the cue "worth" something.

If you take the same shaft you play with, and put it on a heavier/lighter butt, you should definitely be able to tell that it plays differently. I use a Tiger Pro X shaft on a Jim Baxter butt. All together it weighs out to about 18.2. My break cue has the same pin, but weighs in with its stock shaft at almost 20.5. Every once in a while for shits and giggles, I'll put the Tiger shaft on the break cue butt and play with it. You better believe there's a difference.

It should really come down to simple physics. When the same amount of force is applied, a shaft with more mass behind it will flex more than a shaft with less mass behind it.

Instead of putting an ld shaft on the gus, trying playing with an original shaft and you'll see that when done right, the butt and shaft together create the unique 'feel' of the cue.

They must have a lot to do with playing better pool. No one is spending 5k on a shaft. That was just sarcasm. I think if your broom stick is turned down to a comfy diameter. And your comfortable with weight and balance its should play almost as good as any ole 5k butt

Yes. I had my ob classic pr fit to a different butt and it feels completely different now. There is no part of a cue that doesn't matter.

What matters at contact (affects cue ball behavior): weight of cue, and the construction of the tip, ferrule, and first 6-10 inches of the shaft. Nothing else.

What matters to make accurate contact: a few things related to "human factors", like how the weight is distributed along the cue.

What doesn't matter, except in a player's mind: how a cue "feels". By the time the vibrations reach your grip hand, the cue ball is gone. Pool is in large part a mental game, so that's not saying feel is not important. Confidence from a feel that a player likes can mean a lot.

I think

More attention needs to be put on how the butt feels in your hand....HA HA
But seriously ,I sent my Omen to Pete and had him completely resize it or take it down. It made a HUGE difference in how well I liked the cue and playability .May be getting another cue in the near future and it will be made to the same specs.
