Do you have a problem with playing against members of the opposite sex

hmmmmmm

I'm pretty far along in overcoming any problem I might have had with playing players who had a problem with playing opponents of the opposite sex. Unfortunately, those guys won't ever ever get that sentence.

Guys who have a problem playing women make it pretty obvious right from the handshake. So if you have any kind of problem, be it chivalry, fear, chauvinism, hormones: we can tell.

For curiosity's sake, I did a quick tally to see what sort of answers this thread would get. It's not going to add up because some posts went on a sidetrack. Oh- and I didn't look at who said what, so if the same person offered two different sides, each side was counted separately.

SO. So far:

9 = # AZBers who have no stated problem with playing a member of the opposite sex

15 = # posts that were limited to something: degrading, sexual, or offered (uninvited, assumed) pity to the female player (another type of degradation.

2 = # posts that were both of the above....

7 = funny posts that were not offensive or degrading

2 = posts that talked about pool, but just went under the " ? " category.

as a sage once said about the male gender ... when it's a race between glands and brains, bet gray matter to place!

first girl i ever played a game of pool with was Sarah Rousey!! i was just starting to get into the game and she played at the Chicago Billiards Cafe sometimes. Besides her being a pro, whenever i play other girls, i usual lose cause i still revert back to how sarah would stomp on me.

I actually prefer playing men to women, and tend to do better against the men. It's not from sharking, or trying to be cute or anything else...I simply tend to step up my game against men moreso than I do with most women...there are about three women locally that I will play as if they were men, just because they have game.

This may have something to do with the fact that I tend to feel more relaxed around the male players, as I have always had more male friends than female friends...I tend to not have the patience for BS when I am playing.

When it's just to have some fun...I'll take all comers! :D

that's kind of sexist

Just wondering if your a guy playing against a women or a women playing against a guy. Do you feel that you play at your best or do you have a tendency to not play as strong as you think that you should just because your playing a member of the opposite sex ?
If so, do you think it's cost you matches, tournaments etc. ?
Anybody got any stories?

I always played better, after I won my first match (mentally I didn't think I could win, I had the talent and finally won against a strong player).
After that I was a different player...I LOVED shooting against the guys in the local tournaments.
My game was no longer heard as "she plays good for a girl".
It was cool!

I actually met my wife playing in a pool tournament and taking it "easy" on her. She was smoking and I was going for a number, not a win. I ended up whooping her anyway, and she gave her number after to give her "lessons". Now I could care less if it was guy or girl, but sometimes I struggle against the physically impaired.

I play the same against either sex. Even when playing females for fun I play my game and win. If they give me any grief I simply state that it would be disrespectful to them to "let them win". 9 times out of 10 they totally agree with me. =]

Nope. Not at all. Im an equal opportunity loser!

LOL, this....

Until recent years playing BCA, I didn't get to play many women......but over the last few years, many of them play in local tournies and BCA......there are some strong playing ladies in the DFW area, and I've been beaten by more than a few of them.....it's actually changed my viewpoint of pool....

Years ago, I would probably agree that men were better pool players.....but having strong females on my team and playing others in tournaments, I am fully convinced that pool is definitely a sport where men and women compete on equal footing....

Oh, and a few beatings from the ladies have taught me to bare down, don't give an inch because they will take it and put your butt in the losers bracket

Got a couple of gals that come into the hall I frequent that will have you sitting down if you let up just because they are female, and they look good, so you better concentrate when you are at the table unless you like watching them run balls.
No issues here playing females.

Not sure if you mean playing or PLAYING.....

I'll comment on both fun and games "playing" and matching up/tournament playing the opposite sex.

In pratice I would rather play or pratice play with a solid woman player.
Reasons being: they are usually much more gentleman like.....they won't stand in your shot and ***** and moan, they usually have no "hustle" in them in regards to sharking or aggravating stuff.

I find pool to be a HUGE Male genitalia swinging game, thats why friends shouldn't gamble (usually, some friends are "cool" enough to take a beating) Even in practice men are trying to show it off and such, where as a woman just tends to try and complete the challenge ahead of her...

women usually tend to not have that EGO that you have to see and hear so it just makes the time that just more enjoyable.

I used to pratice with Michelle McDermott, Brittney Colbert, Rhonda Pierce and a couple other solid playing women up in oklahoma and I always had a better time playing with them for fun, even with weight given or taken.....it was more of a neutral competition without all the fuss, just two people trying to play pool.

I've played a bunch of girls/women in tournaments big and small. Most notable was against Iris Ranola (sp?) It was BB 8 ball and I was playing very well and had many B&R's in the match against her....she asked me if I was ever gonna let her shoot, I replied "hopefully not cuz then I may not shoot again lol"

It definately puts some pressure on a guy b/c of course we don't want to get beat by a woman lol. But its no differient pressure than what say a much better player faces when playing a much lesser opponent that somehow is staying stride for stride with him.

For myself I play women possibly tougher than I do guys, part of which is I'm sure so I don't lose face by losing to the opposite sex.......but the other part is that women have much better composure on the table in general and think more rational.......they don't necessarily have the firepower but they can usually be pretty sneaky and trap you.

Once you get trapped your ego is likely to shift to the wrong direction making you make mistakes.

This is all about SOLID women players......not just some chick that plays 4 speed. I'm talking APA 6&7's on up to the best pro women. Seasoned women players.

Now I did give a very bad woman player 90-2 in one pocket once....took us forever and I locked her up in jail for hours......I had 88 balls and started letting my brain in b/t my legs do the thinking and shot a break out shot and missed the ball and broke up the stack and LOST 2-88!!!!

She beat me fair and square, I let my ego get in the way and BANG my head exploded....I tried to show off and be greedy and I lost....I don't think I would have addressed that last shot like I did playing a man.

Women also generally tend to learn the game when they apply themselves much faster than men....they are more open to advice since they don't have a pecker getting in the way.

Predispositions about any player can get you into alot of trouble....man or women....we are all players and any of us can win on any given day.

Regardless if the players are equal in skill or gender.....the GAME is equal to any side. If women played with men more they would be just as good in my opinion, maybe better.....I just like womens general attitudes toward the game better than I do men.

They play cuz they either have fun or want to get better or both.....guys generally play so they can show off or make money or something along those lines. Men act like its some sort of fast lane to social status or like being a top shooter is whats going to get them respected. Women players are usually well rounded people, as opposed to many of the men who are generally JUST POOL PLAYERS.

Lisa Marr comes to mind and she's a prime example. Great player, no ego, well rounded/well spoken, good attitude, hard worker.

Thats one of the major reasons the women have a tour and us guys don't.

Many of the women are respectable people who have lives outside of pool where they hold a job, have families etc......the GUYS? LMFAO.....most of the guys don't have a home or real job, many are always "grinding" being homeless when they are b/t girlfriends....always taking a bite out of someone, burning backers, double steering others.......

The women in the sport hold themselves to a higher standard than the men.....thats why they are more successful in organizing a tour and being televised....

kinda got off topic but its all valid to the question in my opinion as its those general diff and occurances that are the cause of how I feel and play about women opponents.

I wish we had more women picking up cues and trying to be competitive, and less men making this all out to be a millimeter peter war.

lol your just like me as I prefer the laidback ness and non-egotistical style of play and composure that most solid women players tend to show/have

I guess its just like women having the "gay" guy for a friend....he's a non-threat so they get along better. Its less biased or personal.....there is of course going to always be somekind of inner tension when playing like gendered people.

Its as if since the opponent is not in the same gender category as you, there is less attention directed to egotistical or unsportsman like thoughts or actions. The players take it less personally.

It may have some linkage to the animal kingdom......as males compete with each other for standing and attention of females. Females sometimes do the same thing towards males (tho much rarer than the former in nature) But no matter the outcome in a male/female "competition" the female can't take the place of the male in social standing, and the male can't take the females place as we have differing natural roles to play.

This non-conflict in the competition makes the outcome felt as more neutral, its just a win or loss. When a man beats another man the winner feels as if he owns the loser and the loser feels owned by the winner.....b/c now the winner is ahead of the loser on the social ladder of pool, a ladder that has two diff sets.....the mens set, and the womens set.

We can't take them and they can't take us........its a seperation of classification thats responsible for the opposites getting along better issue.

Apples may not like other types of apples, but they have no natural issues with oranges. There's no comparing the two so neither is really in competition with the other.

Now when a woman gets to that "man" level in the game it becomes a diff story as no man wants to be beaten by a woman.....b/c now the woman is not in her usual seperate ladder ranking.....now she's on the mans turf.

Kinda like Robin said about how after she got on top she was considered to have "played like a man" she wasn't a threat b/f but then became one, and men started playing her diff than they previously did I'll bet.

See a man can't do that with women, we can't jump on your ladder and prove anything.....buy you gals can always jump over to our side and make us look like fools.....women have much going for them than men have working against them.

You want to play with the men b/c you want to compete against truly better opponents. You don't like playing women normally like you said not b/c of the goings on at the table but the general low calibur of opponent does not fuel your competitive juices.

Sounds like you got bawls girl! :) ( only figuratively lol)

sounds weird but thats my take on it,

I use to have a problem playing good looking women when I was younger. Now at 70 yo I only have that problem if I take a Viagra before the match. Johnnyt

Any advice on how to make it even harder to play a woman?

you mean on how give the woman a better chance at winning? Not sure what your asking lol.

If that is what your asking.....I'd suggest play really dumb and non threatning, smile and make him feel like the guy he is lmao.

He'll get lazy and probably try and show off. Take the lead and work on him when he does make a mistake, don't do anything showy and when you do get in trouble make sure to lock him up.

If a woman gets a guys nose open its much worse than a guy doing it to another guy. In the woman:man situation where the woman is in control of the game the guy will many times overtry b/c he's now fearful of being bested by a woman.

Your already in control and now its his turn and you leave him POWERLESS.....do that enough and his brain will turn to mush.

Guys will do some stupid stupid things when a womans got his bawls in a vice......

If a woman that played top speed pool went on the road as an unknown.....I've always believed that woman could do alot better and make alot more money than a male hustler could.

As almost every guy on the planet would be offering weight when she didn't even need it. So much for that big male ego lol......

men may be the hunters but women are much better trap artists.....
