hey guys, let me start off by saying that im not a great player, rated a C+, but i was wondering if anyone else struggles when they play with low deflections shafts? i have a several cues, but my playing cue is a Dale Perry. i have played with the DP shaft and i have a predator 314-2 shaft for it, as well as tried the tiger shaft, ob-1, and played with a Meucci black dot shaft. but for some reason, i dont feel comfortable with the low deflection shafts cause me to shot poorly. does anyone else go through this? any tips? thanks,
manuel

mtorre14...You are not that unusual. Many players do not like the way these kind of shafts play. Personally, I prefer the hit of the shafts that come with my cues, to any other. It's kinda like there's no middle ground with this stuff. Either you love it, or you have no use for it. Some people will say that you have to play with them for a long time to 'get used to them'. I say play with whatever you're comfortable playing with.

A radical change in equipment like that took me several months to adjust to 100% even when I was playing many hours a week. Only you can decide if you think it is worth it.

I shoot with a predator and have for a few years now but when I first switched over, my game dropped off dramatically because of the difference in aiming and deflection. I stuck with it and now pocket balls better than before. It takes a lot of work and patience because its relearning everything youve learned but at least in my experience, it betters your game.
I suggest setting up shots and hitting middle ball and then with english over and over to get the feel of what you have to do now to get the cue ball reaction you want. You relearn how to play and will probably end up better skiled if you stick with it and pay attention.

I hope it helps.

Oh and no matter what anyone else tells you, if you are a C+ level player, my suggestion is dont play with english unless you master center ball and cheating the pocket to change the path of the cue ball. Once you have that down, then move onto to understanding more english or extreme english.

Good luck

I had the same problem. It took about a month to really get over it. After that everything was back to normal and I could stop body slamming small children.

I switched over to a 314 at first a few years ago and switched over without any huge drop off in my game but it still took some getting use to then in august at APA nationals i got a Z/2 and it didn't take any time getting use to it since i was use to the 314 already. I feel as if i play better with them like someone else said. I've gotten so use to them that I can't play with a regular shaft at all anymore.

Manual,

What you are experiencing is not that uncommon.

The real problem that you have is indecision. Whether you choose to play with LD shafts, conventional shafts that are more LD than others, or Ivory ferrules with the most deflection, you need to stay with it.

Almost all of the different types of shafts have different squirt or deflection. Each time you change, you will have to re-adjust to the new shaft. If you switch again, before you adjust, then you are really lost as to how to compensate.

Obviously, my position is biased, but I believe that LD shafts, particularly OB shafts, are better and have fewer variables to compensate for. But, no matter what you choose, stick with it until you have it mastered. Then, if you want to play around with other technologies you can without loosing what you have already mastered.

I played with a predator 314 shaft on a Joss sneaky pete butt for three months straight and finally gave up in disgust. It wasn't worth the aggravation. I've found no so-called low deflection shafts that play better than the shafts that came with my cues.
One other thing, on the Meucci Black Dot and the predator 314-the Meucci played way better for me, right out of the box. Didn't play any better than the three or four custom cues I had at the time, though.

I tried them and I couldn't play well either (I'm a B player). I didn't wanna invest the time to adjust when my normal shaft was fine for me.

thanks, for all the insight guys, it does really help to know that i'm not the only one that this has happen to. i guess, the best thing i could do is just play with the shaft that i play best with. thanks again,
manuel

What specifically were the shots that you shot poorly?
