The first time Luat came to the Trophy room, hw was introduced as "Boy Sampson". I asked my friend Mario why was he called Boy Sampson. Just before He got ready to break, Marion sais, "WATCH THIS!!!! and you will understand. I understood.

I heard Luat once broke a cueball in half after a samson-like power break..hence the moniker.

luat..

when TAR was in reno for the bar table championships jcin had the day shift i had the night shift luat walked in with a bag of carry out food from the chinese resturant and said you look hungry! so he bought me dinner. thought that was cool.............. great guy and i owe him dinner now!

If he broke a cueball in half then the ball was faulty and it had nothing to do with his break. I've taken a hammer to pool balls before, don't ask:thumbup: , and I can tell you that they don't just break in half as easy as that.

First time you ever owed anybody... LOCKSMITH

He actually didn't break it in half. There was a chip on the cue ball but everything gets over exagerated. At least thats what he said.

Last time I played Luat was for 6 hours and he missed once... I felt lucky to walk away a $200 loser. It was some of the best practice I've ever had. He definitely has one of the best and most powerful strokes in pool. He used to beat all the other filipinos with the exception of Efren which could have gone either way. I heard that one time he beat Efren in a race to 31 in front of the whole town and Efren wouldn't talk to him for weeks... If I could have anyone's stroke in pool it would be Rudy's.

First time I saw Luat match up was back in '95 at Hard Times.
He raced to 17 against Davenport. He drilled Davenport 17-11.
The bet I believe was $2000 a set.
Kim asked for the 8 the next set and Luat lost.
They called it a day.
Luat is called Boy Samson ( supposedly ) because he used to lift tables 8-footer tables in the islands to shim the feet to level them.
He lost the world 9-ball to Archer that year then won it against Varner the next year iirc.

First time I saw him play was at Akron, Ohio. 1985. Him, Parica and Efren were there. I watched the three of them play matches againgst Buddy Hall, Earl, Ray Martin, Mike Sigel and they walked around so relaxed. It looked like they were just havin fun at a club somewhere practicing. I got to play Luat in a bar table tourney about 5 or 6 years ago. Race to 9, loser breaks. I got beat 9-4 I think in the finals. He had a guy with him doing side bets. I believe they were offering 7 to 1 odds on each match, that the opponent would not get to 6. It was a pretty strong bet considering some of the players that were there. I don't think they lost any bets.

I played him EVEN One Pocket a few months ago, cuz it was just sociable, $10 a game, and I didn't mind if I donated a little, I just wanted to see how many games I could win........Anyway, unfortunately I had the same experience that branpureza did = Rudy missed once during our 3 hours of playing on a tight table....and the one miss was only because it was a long shot that he had loaded up with inside english trying to get some sick position....lol

I think that's right after efren won the world pool championship.

Luat...

Rudy was up here in the Northwest some years back with Efren and Rolondo Vincente...I got to know him at that time and we are still friends to this day...always a nice time to be around him and the slot machines and some meals too....

I remember him telling me about how when he was a boy even before his teens he "Learned the game too fast" that is why they called him Boy Samson... he just played so strong so early....

Rudy has the most fluid stroke that I have ever seen...too funny when he walks around the table while running out and he always drags the butt of his cue on the floor behind him while chalking or analyzing the table...he has that side arm thing a bit too...check it all out next time you see him play ....

I have an accustats tape with him playing I think Roger Griffis where Grady is commentating and Luat makes the most unbelieveable 1-9 combo from a mile away after the break...cue ball is near the corner...one ball in the middle of the table and nine ball is about 1.5 feet or so from the opposite corner pocket other end of the table...Luat fires it in a thousand miles an hour and Grady says..." It is unhaman that a man could make a shot like that"...

Luat is a great player and it has been said that he plays the game like no other pro...odd patters and position routs ...very unconventional...but he has mastered his own special style of running out and playing the game...

thanks again,

Mr. J.

I have videos of Luat playing Ernesto in the semis of world 9-ball.
Great video. Luat does a thin cut lefthanded that'd be you sick.
The final of that PBT event in Denver against Efren is a great video too.
Luat runs 30+ balls one time on Efren but still loses.

i have a video of luat missing a virtual hanger 9 ball on the hill only to see earl jump over a ball and steal the match from him in the final game.

Luat has been to Grayslake Ill. at On Cue (formerly Cue N You) several times to play in tournaments. It's like stealing candy from a baby. Anyway, I can never get there to play because I've always got to work on Saturday. But I stopped in to watch after work and a friend of mine motioned over towards Luat and said "hey, that guy will play you some" and I said "bring it." But...I said it a little too loud and Luat looked up at me, so I figured I'd better go introduce myself. I told him I didn't mean any disrespect that I was just talking trash with one of my friends. While I had his attention I set a ball just off the corner pocket on the long rail and brought the cue ball straight out about 18" and asked him if he could bank the ball in the other corner pocket. He said he didn't know that shot. As if right on cue...cuemaker Jonathan Spitz walked over and asked me to look at a cue he'd just made. I asked if I could use it...and I banked the ball on the first try. Luat just took off without saying a word. The funny thing is one of my friends said he probably didn't know the shot because he never gets out of line...I'd agree with that. Luat...real nice guy, and a great player as well. Oh, by the way...he won the tournament

I do have some Luat stories of my own I can tell, however few of my favorites are my dad's stories of him being my dad's favorite player from back in the day. The way he told it...

Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat was indeed of one the most skilled Pinoys ever to hold a cue. When Rotation and Carom were the only billiard games played here at that time, it was only Luat who played even with Efren and actually did win at times! However, there were atleast two more guys who played at Efren's and Luat's speeds that didn't go mainstream. And with no disrespect meant to Jose "Amang" Parica, there was a time that Luat offered to give the 15-ball as weight to Jose in money games just to entice him to play with him. But still Jose refused. However when I personally asked Luat about this, he said it wasn't true and just simply offered to play even with Parica. This was when Parica was way younger and at the top of his game.

He got the moicker "Boy Samson" actually from the strength of his break. He practically destroys the rack...and this was in full-rack rotation!

I wasn't aware he changed his cue to a Diveney. Must've been something else to have pulled him away from his Lambros. That was an amazing and beautiful cue.

When Luat was first brought over here to the US he came to Rob's Roost near Charlotte N.C. to a tournament that was very well known for gambling. He drew me the first round. I knocked him in the loser bracket. He started playing Grady 9 ball right after our match and made a great score. I played him one more time in a Camel event and just knew I wanted to win a game to not get skunked. I quit playing because of my car accident and was not in good form and Luat was destroying people like the great player he is. Well I beat him again and am currently undefeated against the Samson legend. I know I need the 6 and the last 4 in 10 ball from him but well I think I will take that game.

Could someone settle the matter once and for all: did Luat win a world championship ever?
