Does Anyone Here Shoot With A Cheapie Pool Cue?

I see nothing wrong with someone playing with a cue worth $2000 or more. It's just like I could buy an old clucker to drive from point A to point B but I prefer my Mustang. Johnnyt

Hey Guys :)

Johnny, yourself and Halhoule have spoen what my thoughts are in your posts alone :)

It's like I said before, it's the shooter that is shooting, not the cue stick itself and so, to me, it wouldn't matter if I were to pick up a$30 cue stick, because I could easily make a few adjustments to it if need be :)

Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to go for a custom cue, but with the way things are going financially, I'm looking to save as much bankroll as I can, but whilst getting the most out of the cue stick that I can :)

This has been discussed many, many times. Yes, a cheaper cue can play just as good as an expensive cue.

But there definately is something to be said for a cue that just feels good in your hands. Balance, taper, tip, hit.....etc.....

Hey Guys :), thanks for your replies so far :)

As reguards the value of Efren's original cue stick, It's purely a complete guess and is not the point of my post :)

I've used a cue stick before that only cost about $60 and I ran a 100+ balls in straight pool with it, whereas alot of high end cues I've owned and shot with, (Inluding a Meucci Gambler 2, that I had for 6/7 years) I wasn't getting the same results with any of them, which is making me consider the possibility of going back to a basic 2 piece cue stick, and just customising it, by having new ferrules and tips put on, shave a little off the taper, etc :)

chances are that meucci gambler just wasn't stiff enough for you

Ok I'll chime in. Keep in mind that I am in Afghanistan so there is no reason to have anything flashy to play with over here. At home I have many high end cues and cases but here it's a different story. The cue I play with over here is an old players cue. I took the linen wrap off, put sharpie marker all over it, then I put two duct tape wrings for the wrap, took my leatherman and carrved out the forearm to make it look like a leapord type print, put a couple stickers on it. I stuck a predator shaft on the cue and there you have it. The Afghani special.

Thanks, John

all in the mind?

I think that a lot depends on the player. Some players (and in my youth I was one of them) believe that they need a high end cue to play their best game. If you believe it, then for you it may well be true: If you pick up a cue from the rack, in your mind you can't get over the fact that it is not a 'good' cue and your came suffers accordingly.

But while many high-end cues do have desirable qualities, far more important than playing with a good cue is playing with one that you are used to, has a good tip on it, and which has the characteristics you like.

Those characteristics are personal: for some it will be that the cue must be rigid; for me, I don't really care as long as it has a smooth-running shaft and not too large diameter butt. But it is not necessarily true that you have to pay a lot of money to get those characteristics. Getting used to the cue is important though.

Different game, but Stephen Hendry (who many regard as the greatest snooker player ever) won a record 7 world championships using a sub $100 cue.

Very Cool!

It's a guy with a cue like that who would scare me! Not someone who pulls up in a BMW and pulls out some megabucks cue!!!

(-:

my top player ...my baby.. is currently in custody of the US postal service.. sent it back to the manufacturer for "lifetime maintenance check" pretty sweet deal I sent $21.95 for return shipping and I get new wrap, new ferrule, new tip, new shaft.... whatever it needs... forever...tough to beat...

back on point...it's been gone about a week... during that time I have been shooting with a cobbled together mess of cheap cues...the butt of a $50 cue and the shaft off something even cheaper( solid maple though)

and much to my surprise.... my game hasn't dropped off a bit...

did your house fall down because the carpenter used a cheap hammer? or was it because he couldn't hit a nail??

it's not the arrow it's the Indian... the more I play the more I believe that...

runout1961, tried to rep you for posting that stick of yours, but was told I had to spread my rep around before giving it to you again! :)

That is the cue of the day for sure.

Why dont you just shut up? I and many others are tired of your false authority and redundant garbage. And up yours with the big tournaments, you are not a champion, no one cares what you have to say.

Speak only for yourself febreze. Perhaps the 'ignore' feature would be of some value to you, given your reaction, and given the fact that until someone is banned they have every right to post.

Hal has contributed much to the game, how about you ?

I agree wholeheartedly :)

After all, everyone is entitled to their views, likes/dislikes, just the same as the next person, and besides, we all have our own preferences :)

In my case, it's looking very likely that I'll be choosing a budget level cue stick, but at the same time, I may not bother buying any cue sticks, It turns out that the pool room that I shoot in, has now closed and I'm really disgusted because there are very is a pool rooms with American tables, there is a room about 10 miles from me, but it's banger central, the cloth on the tables is crap, they don't keep the tables properly maintained and there isn't total space round any of the tables to shoot, because they got steel bar stools that are bolted to the damn floor too close to the table

To me, the quality of my screw-on tips and easy-fit enlarged ferrules are the most important part of my $15,000 Miller Genuine Draft cue. I paid $6 for the cue, but I had someone put platinum and gold inlays of little blades and laser rays, and Hasslehoff faces. Then, engraved in diamond and human-bone, it says the nickname I gave my cue: Blaserhoff. Well-worth the money spent.

I have a $40 Mcdermott C-3 (ok I bought it in the 80's), an old Viking, 2 Predators, an Espiritu, a Lishan, an $1100 Shurtz, and seveal Filipino cheapies. If I shot consistently enough to tell you which one I always play the best with I'd be out looking for action instead of here at my real job goofing off. Although I do use a Predator most often. At anything much over $100 the tip is gonna make more difference than the cue itself.

I somtimes use a modified Scorpion NT6.

I had Eddie Wheat modify the joint (now it is a 3/8x10) and fit on an old d-series Mcdermott shaft with an Ivory ferrule with a pressed triangle tip.

It hits really nice and I am not worried about theft very much or dings, scratches etc on the butt, etc...

I have 3 lucasi cues and a Z Shaft which fits them all. Doubt any of the butts are worth more than $200.

Pehrhaps ignorance is bliss?. I have never played extensively with anything else. They are my cues, love 'em. No way I could play better with any one of your $5000+ cues.

I can't beleive it!

I realize that I'm new to posting here, but been reading for a long time. I would've thought for sure that Travis Trotter would've settled this discussion once and for all!
