Who are the good guys 10%?they tell me that 90 percent of the people making the cues from there DO NOT have all the permitts required to cut, buy, or to use these illegal woods for anything...they are essentially committing a crime to obtain these woods.....
with all due respect, and to make it clear, we cuemakers are not loggers. Only the loggers need permit to cut the tree and cuemaker like me did not go to mountains and cut trees. Also, you inquired at some of your friends at customs, as far as i know customs agents did not go to mountains and ask for permits for loggers. It will be truthful if you asked the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to make it sure. Government right now is strictly implementing the rules against illegal loggers. Even they cut the woods from the mountains, they cannot travel it to the market place easily because check points are everywhere in the province.
For the record also, when i buy those hardwoods, i personally go to some lumberyard, they have given permit to cut old trees and have rules to follow on it. Also i'm not the kind of buyer that buys those big straight trunk parts of wood. Most that i buy was the mess cut, those pieces that they did not give an importance and people there use it as firewoods...
As far as illegal loggers concern, if you go to some mountains, there are tribal or ethnic people living, and to say the reality, they cut trees and make some "Kaingins" for agriculture because thats the only source for food for their families. Its hard to prioritize those paperworks if your fighting for your families stomach.
Here is my question... if we as pool players, get caught with one, can we be the ones to get in trouble for it if we had no idea that it was illegal and we just bought it because it looked good?
Joel
i just going to play with cues made out of plastic lol. this thread got a little deep, some people care and some dont, i think thats how the world has been and will always be regardless of the environment/government conditions.
just asking cause ....well cause I care about the trees that I am basing my life earning from...... such as 80percent of cues coming from philippines?
I was reading a post that someone was shhowing some cues off, when something clicked....wait....i said....isn't amboyna from the philippines illegal? kamagong..philippine ebony? narra? tugas...which can be called koa sometimes...? and many more?
these woods are...I mean are illegal to cut or even used for exporting any product...unless a few requirements are meet.... so ... I inquired to a few friends from there, who are working in customs, about these cue makers and what permits do they have if any..... this was because I wanted to get some wood there if I could obtain them legally.... and wanted to make sure all my ducks are in a row before I make my move to cut some trees and start exporting....so within 5 days they get back with me...
they tell me that 90 percent of the people making the cues from there DO NOT have all the permitts required to cut, buy, or to use these illegal woods for anything...they are essentially committing a crime to obtain these woods.....
ex....permit can be obtained to kill an elephant and take the ivory as trophies.... but are you ok with smuggled ivory on your cue...I mean really ok with that?
if I know how the woods are cut, when they are cut, how they are transported, smuggled and landing areas..... would you be ok with this and if I go out and deforest a mountain to obtain these woods you want and cause mudd slides everywhere in my wake and kill people, would you be fine with that?
I don't think that this practice is right and for people in the philippines making these cues with these woods know what I mean......
opinions?
Who are the good guys 10%?
You need a permit to BUY ILLEGAL WOODS ?
Who sells them? DNR ?
Do you think having PERMITS will legalize the process? If I were an illegal logger and had the money, I could just payoff the authorities to produce the necessary papers to make everything legal! That works in many countries, especially in the Philippines. Are the cue manufacturers sure that their wood and other materials are supplied LEGALLY, or are they just being "LEGALIZED" through under-the-table deals? So, do you really think that having papers can just LEGALIZE everything?
If we really want to help the environment then we have to change our LIFESTYLE. Instead of eating meat, go vegetarian/fruitarian as live stocks produce lots of ecological wastes, and even toxins, instead of releasing precious oxygen (ie, stop drinking beer and eating pizza as yeasts produce carbon dioxide). If you want to reduce global temperatures; stop industrialization & start an agricultural revolution; start walking or biking instead of using electricity or fossil-fed vehicles; limit cue collections, stop making crappy cues and start making high quality ones so that we don't have to change cues that will lead to more trading of woods! Actually, why don't we just stop playing pool since almost everything in pool has effect on the environment: the organic and inorganic parts of the pool cues, cases, tables, and accessories... Are all these made from LEGALIZED materials? Are all the things we use daily come from LEGALIZED sources and processes?
Don't blame the government, let's blame ourselves since we are part of the complex process in which we are all trying to satisfy our WANTS instead of our needs.
i've only had 1 cue with kamagong in it and it was obtained legally. you hardly ever see it in us made cues
your smart like what you said....i like most of the replies you give....but why are people attacking me for asking a question? a simple yes or no would have done....but nooooo.... people cann't read and attack me and what I asked was a question not a statement....then now im on the defensive ...man this sucks.... like the replyCuetec Cues and Meucci Cues are looking really good right now. Enviromentally speaking that is.
Meucci's NEW ads will stress how eco-friendly their cues are as they are made of recycled plastic bottles.
In the United States every importer is required to fill out a form detailing the origin of the woods used in the products that they are importing. This is to be in compliance with the Lacey Act which covers the use of woods on the CITIES list of endangered species.
In fact the importer can be held liable and fined if they are selling goods which contain woods that are on the endangered list and the wood is not properly documented.
Any wood that is on the endangered list cannot be used in any form of commerce whatsoever.
Woods with a lower classification are controlled as to how much of them can be used commercially.
A good example is Ramin. Twenty years ago most Asian cues were made of Ramin wood. As was most Asian furniture. The furniture demand completely wiped out forests. Consequently Ramin was placed on the endangered list and it is no longer legal to use it. Some still do but it's not legal.
Of course most knowledgeable people will ridicule the use of Ramin in pool cues but the point is that ecologically those millions of Ramin wood cues which flooded the market were contributing to the depletion of vast tracts of forest and habitats.
I do think it's a bit silly to worry about the woods used in pool cues. Honestly the world is self-regulating. Mudslides happen in places where no excess logging has occurred. Life happens.
If we screw up our planet then we die off as a species. The planet will continue to do it's thing and whatever life forms survive will thrive until they get killed by bugs or ruin their environment.
If people want to get on moral pedastals about it then you will be chasing that rabbit down the rabbit hole for a long long long time. Barely anyone lives truly "green" and in harmony with nature.
Use electricity to build your cues? You are polluting the environment. Use plastics in your cues? You are polluting the environment. Use leather tips? You don't want to know the waste produced by tanning leather. And it goes on and on and on.......
So the only way to live without harming the environment is to step all the way outside of society and go live in the woods. Otherwise you are consuming goods which are made in ways that harm the environment on some level. Goods that take from nature more than they put back.
Now that doesn't mean we should all be wasteful and uncaring. We can all alter our lives to be more responsible consumers.
At some point though we have to trust the people up the chain from us. I have to trust the cue maker to obtain his woods from a trusted and legal source. And hopefully someone won't vandalize my cue in the pool room to show their displeasure at the type of woods used.
I had an internal debate two years ago about whether to use leather or not due to the fact that leather production produces nasty waste that is hard to dispose of.
At the end of the day I decided that it's not any worse than digging up oil and turning that oil in vinyl (plastic).
Man has always tanned animal skins and this material is versatile and renewing.
So the fact is that if we want to have all the nice things that we want we have to accept that it takes not so nice ways to get them. That's the cycle of life. Luckily we consumers are removed from getting our hands dirty or we might not consume quite so much.
Find your own balance in your life.
kamagong also known as macascar ebony?
legally how was it imported here? if so it is illegal for that wood to be in the us if it was imported from the philippines......anyways I don't care about trying to defend a question I asked and being attacked for.....simple yes or no would have sufficed from people.......but I love kamagong to.... it is nice........

why the long defensive reply when all I asked if people cared and nothing more? eys or no would be ok..... not you defending your ways of making corrupted official by bribing them with you money.....
...I asked custom for the cues exported via mail and travel..... not DNR
as far as the DNR goes....if they sell it ...does that mean I can too...? is it still good? illegal
hey how about this...a crack head kills to feed his habit....oh wait a police man kills a man to steal money from him to feed his family....does that mean I can kill you cause I have to feed my family....illegal
most lumber yards do not have all the paper works they need also....under the table payment...then you buy and you inable...they cut more so you can buy more...do the math.....1(logger cuts)+1(you buy)= 2(cutting more wood for you to buy.)
check points...you know how they travel the wood, under the boat...... not over roads...... still illegal
and why are you trying to justify something that is illegal cause your family is hungry .....still illegal
robbing someone to feed your family....still illegal.
and if you read my previous post I only asked if people really care where there wood came from......YES or NO.....
YET you defend your crimes......how sad.
Bro, if you want a simple "EYS OR NO" answer, I think you should have made this topic into a POLL and not ask for our opinions in the first place as indicated in the last line of the first post... just my 25 centavos
OMG!!!i will not make it long, cause i have rules that i follow in my life, well thats your opinion and your free for that..
I agree, it should be clear on the first post, just for the simple YES or NO. and My apology if i give my opinions and was not able to answer it in 1 word. and this is also my last post.
More powers to all,
