Does everyone here use a jump cue?

Yeah, it's another skill that should be learned with your playing cue, not a cheat stick, which is what a jump cue is. It was created to cash in on the millions of $$, people spend, that think it helps their game....total BS. I'm pretty sure most of the pro's only carry them because of the silly rules that allow them.

Cheat stick?

Buwahaha that's funny.

Here you contradict yourself again. First you say it's cheating and then you say "...that THINK it helps their game...total BS"

So is it cheating if I'm using something I think helps my game but doesn't?

It's a tool to be used in certain situations where it's best for the player playing.

I feel the ppl who have some baseless dislike for them either don't know how to use them or can't get their wallet out to buy one.

It's a legal part of the game. You want to be a well rounded player, you'll learn to use a jumper or become proficient w your playing cue. Personally I'm a big believer in the right tool for the job.

What if I used a masse' cue? Would you be opposed to that?

I don't like the gloves ppl wear playing pool, those are cheating too, ban em.

Sort trick question. I think they make game easier so I wish they weren't allowed but if asking if you would be more accurate with jump cue rather than full cue jump than yes I'd rather have a jump cue

Phenolic tips are illegal by the WSR and they damage the cue ball. A lot of jump cues have phenolic tips.

I use a jump cue, because I'm very good with it, and I would be handicapping my game without it. With everybody else using them, I don't see why I should not? I often shoot jumpshots full cue when practising, but in game situations, of course I'll use the jump cue. I generally don't like the aestetics of jump shots, especially short jumps, but it has become part of the game so I guess it's here to stay.

That being said, if they were outlawed I'd be fine with it, as I can also jump full cue. I figure I'd be at a great advantage if that was to happen.

The jump shot is such a misunderstood and underestimated shot. It's the shot everybody thinks they're good at, but 98% of people saying that actually SUCK! They have no cueball control, no consistency in pocketing and generally no clue on how to shoot this shot. When an average player reach for the jump cue, I'd estimate that there is a 70% or higher chance that he'll not run out from there, even if he does make the first (jumpshot) ball some of the time. A lot of the times he fails, he'll either give up ball in hand or an easy shot.

The jump shot is often improperly taught and poorly learned. Those who invest time in learning how to do it properly will get tons of wins from it. But most quit practising once they figure out how to clear the obstructing ball.

The people who whine the most about the jump cue are almost as clueless. One idiot gets a lucky hit, and now they are furious and out for blood! Pool has a lot in common with poker, in that the percentages are important to know, but sometimes people get lucky. Are you going to outlaw kicking as well? Just the other day, a guy got two lucky kicking snookers in the same game against me! Believe me, he had no clue about where the balls were going. It's part of the game to deal with crap like that. How about jumping full cue? Sometimes people get lucky doing that as well.

If you dislike jumping, play billiards or snooker.

I still really really wish they would bring back the Jump Rod! Love that thing. I remember when they came out and it didn't take long for them to get banned in all tournaments. I didn't care about tournies as I rarely played them, but if someone wouldn't allow it in an action match I flat out refused to play ( unless it was for good money and I was flat out stealing anyway lol ). The given reason for the banning was " supposed damage to the cue balls ". I called BS then as I call BS now! The Jump Rod had a hard Phenolic tip - just as many jump cues do now. Not harder than anything that is allowed today. Yes it had a larger tip but I see no way that could cause additional damage compared to the slightly smaller ones???? I think they were banned because it made it SOOO easy to jump just about anything from any closeness. Literally could jump half inch to quarter inch away every time !

As to me having a jump cue now, no. I am very comfortable jumping with a full cue. I've had several jumpers over the years, but none that I bought for myself. I either got them extremely cheap or won them and just resold them quickly for profit. I never really got into them too much as I could pretty much always kick and at least hit a ball but my kick safeties were indeed lacking so I focused on improving them because that is an invaluable skill imo. Nowadays it doesn't really matter , as I hardy ever play rotation any more ( usually one hole ). One jump cue I am interested in at least checking out though is I think it's called " Marty's " something or the other. It's a dart style and seems to be highly acclaimed by many.

Many moons ago when I was more wet behind the ears, I played for a year in a league that prohibited jumps, and I did not like jump sticks.

After I "graduated" and moved to the big city, I joined an "anything goes" league.

The first match I played against some guy, I leave him a so-so safe behind an object ball. I walked back to my chair pleased as punch with myself.

He sauntered over to his case, took out a jumper and popped that sucker in. Then he ran out the rest of the rack on me.

The next day I bought my very first jump cue. And the rest they say, is history...

Dnml<~Nowadays will often push to a jump shot
As par, for the course

I don't understand why people are so against use of the jump cue. What is so wrong with that?

I use a Mezz Airshooter, best jumper I ever had.

So you think everyone here may use one though you don't? ( in the title) Really?

Probably a poorly worded title, though my intentions weren't to imply anything negative or to stipulate that 'everyone' here uses a jump cue. I was merely trying to ascertain whether or not the consensus feels they're a necessary facet of the game. A few months ago I decided pool was no longer going to be something I do on occasion if I happen to be at a bar with a table, but instead a life-long hobby that I enjoy and can become better at. I hope you'll excuse any ignorance if I've somehow slighted you with my query.

No Jump Cue for me. I've owned a half dozen Alex Brick J/B's (the best out there), but
never took the time nor made a concerted effort to become proficient with one, so I
do my best by kicking for the shot and rarely make the intended ball. At 75, I won't be
jumping balls any time soon. Besides, I'm a dedicated 14.1 player.

To those who would ban jump cues, why not also ban break cues?

I think people use break cues to protect their playing cue. My player has a steel joint and I use a hard tip on my player and I have been known to use my player as a break cue. So I'm fine if break cues are banned. As I had said earlier, thee is no need to ban jump cues. I think one in ten players actually have a modicum of skill using a jump cue. When my opponent pulls out their jump cue I anticipate having ball in hand. Pay attention and you will be amazed how often a jumps result in ball in hand.

A jump cue are an excellent tool that adds alot of flavor and variety to the game.

Anyone who balks at them is cheating themselves. Don't listen to the troglodytes; jumping is great.

X2
jumping is just another facet of the game. we do use break cues, leather tips AND chalk, now.

Yea, my break cue is juat an old play cue of mine. It's heavy because I used to like heavy cues, I'll probably have to change the tip eventually though where it's medium leather.

But like you said, I use it so my play cue remains in good condition sans tip replacements.
