Does pool appeal especially to intelligent people ... or does AZB prove otherwise?

The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side.

The Scarecrow

Sorry Scarecrow, you unfortunately got it wrong, and posted it on this thread on poolplayers intelligence. :( So, let's correct the error:

The square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides.

(Not the square root.)

THAT SAID, LET'S GO ON: Some frequent posters here forget that there is a large audience group, who observe and read these forums, but don't say much in print. As my dad once taught me, you learn more by listening, and others have to guess whether you are smart or dumb; when you open your mouth, it becomes more obvious.

Well, I've never heard of a fluteophone, but when I was in grade school I was a Tonette 'specialist'. I could belt out "Little Brown Jug" in my sleep.
Girls crowded around me on the walk home from school, in hopes that I'd get down with a little "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley" ....

( I was a damned jellybean eating Tonette playing Grand CHAMPION ) :)

.

I KNEW you would show up to resolve the issue!

But I played sax and some really dirty blues harp (still do play harp) and where I went to school, the girls would have beaten you up for playing the tonette!

And where does that information show up in Google's code, Apple's Iphones or Exxon's oil wells????

Kidding of course. Geology is a very useful science.

I know more than a few people (myself included) who's grades have dropped DUE to playing pool, so maybe pool actually makes u DUMMMER : )

Or it could just be that late nights in the pool hall make it hard to go to class the next day.

Good catch, Red Lite! (Hey, there are some pretty smart people here!)

However, I was quoting the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz when he received his diploma. Those were his exact words, wrong or not.

...I think AZB proves that it DOES appeal to intelligent people. Here on this forum is the most intellectual cross section of the pool population...

Boy, you're clearly contradicting yourself there, aren't you vette? This group is the best pool has to offer?! Just kidding!

The 3 signs of Intelligence

First, is the ability to 'recognize' (awareness)
Second, is the ability 'to relate' (communication)
Third, is the ability to 'act' (resolving issues or problems)

Here in Boston there is a pretty good cross section, from real estate developers and Biotech company owners to people in other aspects of financial pursuits. And none of that is relevant to intelligence more about being smart.

I started this thread a while back...I thought the results were very interesting. Jim

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=53770

If you look at the results
20% have HS or less
25% have some college
30% have a college degree
25% have advanced degree (MA +)

Under occupations in a previous thread I noted that more than half of the people on AZB are involved in some way with computers.

BTW Terry, I graduated second from the bottom of my HS class and later earned a Ph.D. Just becasue someone likes to read it does not make them intelligent.

Intelligence is highly over rated. Character and what you do with it is much more important. Swedenborg (one of the most intelligent people who ever lived) said that intelligence is in service to emotions. We are all here to gain experience (at the pool table preferably).

I think these numbers lead to the suggestion that educated (not necessarily intelligent) people are more commonly found on the forums. I also think there are many types of intelligence and Terry exhibits a high level of one type but I wonder if others recognize it.

I have long noted Terry is highly intelligent. One of the more intelligent posters on these forums. Not the most knowledgeable in arcane areas, probably not in the elite in pool knowledge but loaded down with the day to day smarts that get us through life.

One notices frequent examples of bad spelling, poor sentence structure, etc. in a lot of the posts, but does that relate directly to intelligence? Me doesn't no.

Some people INTENTIONALLY misspell the words and make grammatical errors. There are reasons for that and one reason is to derail the people who consider themselves as detectives/investigators when these people try to build the profiles of the posters including the identification of the posters. There are few other reasons which I do not need to mention here.

GREAT post Joe! Rep to you. And I would add to reading, the fact that short term memory plays a HUGE roll in the GPA-based educational system.

It is one thing (and a very insignificant one) to recall the date the shots were fired on Ft. Sumter...without having a CLUE as to WHY the shots were fired...whether they should have been fired or the consequences of that event.

Jim

over 200 causes

A friend had to give 200 causes of the war of northern aggression. He first thought it was an impossible assignment but once started found it was quite easy. Interestingly, slavery didn't even make his list.

JoeyA,
Two things....

1. When I was first watching that video, it reminded me of the time that my ex-wife had a bunch of my family & friends over for a cook-out that she was kind enough to prepare. That video looked like we all did the next day, when whatever was wrong with it kicked in. I think we had some kind of salmon-yellow poisoning or something.

2. What the heck does MP. 00:42 mean? I know that ain't in the Bible. I can't find my Captain Crunch de-coder ring that I got back in 2nd grade when I mailed in 3 boxtops to decipher it, so can you help me out with a translation? Right now, my best guess is that you were a Military Policeman & your badge number was 42. Am I close???

3. Thanks for the laughs buddy!:D :D
