Men`s professonal pool had Golden era under Mackey`s leadership. It can`t be disputed. Before and after Macky, pool never really had good men`s pro tour.

vagabond...Surely you jest! Mackey was a total dictator. As a PBTA player you were punished if you wanted to play in other independent events (a ridiculous concept). The players did not benefit any more during his 'dictatorship' than they did with the organization before (PPPA), or the UPA since. Yes, there was the Camel Tour for a few years, but there were plenty of other tournaments too. When RJ Reynolds pulled out of pro pool, Mackey "sued" in court, and won $600K. Guess how much of that went to the players? Answer: ZERO! If you call that leadership, then I guess we disagree on what constitutes a good leader.

I've got one thing to say, Good Riddance! Look up "carpetbagger" and you'll get some idea of my opinion about him. He did a good job of brainwashing the players to their own detriment. They actually had a chance for something big to happen with R.J. Reynolds, until you know who insisted on sticking his fat greedy fingers into the pie. No more pie! And no more tour either.

The MPBA seem to have alot of tournament back in the 80's and players seem to do pretty well.

LoL I knew I had read about him before, but just couldn't put my finger on it. I read about it in your book.

I remember the Mackey law suit against RJ Reynolds and after the way RJ Reynolds was treated it spelled the end of corporate sponsorship for Men's Pro Pool. After the law suit ended Mackey wasn't heard from again. That law suit was a case of biting the hand that feeds you.......

sad!

wow thats sad. back when they did the live telecast, you could tell he wanted to be the show with his BIG mouth. jmo As I think back to that time I thought we would see alot of pool on the tube and then it just kinda went away. And because of one persons GREED it has suffered all these years. when do they get it?

Don did not like the way ESPN wanted to use the Pro pool.He felt that ESPN was trying to make pool look like a " Gong Show " and did not agree with the trems.Hence men`s pro pool disappeared from the ESPN.I repeat that he did not want the ESPN abuse the pro pool and pro players.

When my friends CJ,Breedlove and other CJ`s followers accused Don of stealing money, Don asked me whether I believed that accusation.I told him that " God only knows whether u did or did not, I did not care even if you stole and you have been doing a good job in putting good shows".That was way before the start of the camel tour. I did not like evrything he did.Onething I did not like was He attempted to split the players and he did a good job at it. He built an inner circle-Nick varner,Kim davenport,Johny Archer.Allen Hopkins was his right hand man but later they both split when allen did not like the way Don was conducting the business.Actually it was Allen hopkins who brought Don into pool.Mike Massey was not in the inner circle and Don was always concerned about Mike massey since mike can confront Don on issues and facts.
Inspite of all the negatives, Don Mackey did a good job and pool had golden age during his time:cool:

This question was asked about a year ago! I posted then the only time I was around him was at the pro stop at Champs Billiards (CJ's Billiard Palace). Luckily it was my only time. I found this man to be an arrogant Ahole. I will not mention the players name, but Mackey embarrassed this man so bad I thought he was going to quit the tournament. He was screaming at this player at the top of his lungs with his wife sitting beside him. He was telling the player that he would do what he said or he would be off the tour. Mackey was in his face yelling this is my tour and you play for me. It's a good thing the player thought more of the tour than his pride. If I were in the players position I would have been picking his teeth out of my knuckles. I came close to intervening because me and my wife were sitting there but John McChesney was standing behind me and told me that he would take care of it. I have no respect for any human that belittle another person as Mackey did.

I disagree Vag. He killed pro pool for the men! And lined his own pockets in the process.
