I just got this email from Don Sherman and wondering if its a hoax or should we try and help him.

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes,my family and I came over here to London,United Kingdom for a short vacation. unfortunately,we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed, all cash and credit card were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.

We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves in few hours from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. Well I really need your financial assistance..Please, Let me know if you can help us out? Am freaked out at the Moment.

Don Sherman......
I believe someone got that same type of e-mail last year. Be careful. Johnnyt

Jack, do you personally know someone named Don Sherman? If not, I'd ignore it. Sounds and looks like a scam to me.

Edit: I do know someone by that name and I wouldn't lift a finger to help him if I could.

Don Sherman......

I suppose it's possible, but it has all the earmarks of a relatively common scam. More likely he lost his cell phone or laptop or one of them was hacked and this was blasted out to everyone in his address book.

I've seen very similar e-mails, on several previous occasions. Sounds like a scam.

I don't know Don, and I certainly wouldn't send him a single dime. Even if your card is stolen, you can contacts Visa or whom ever to get the bill taken care of. This is total horse crap.

I got it too. I am pretty sure it is a scam by someone using Don's email account.
I got one from (supposedly) another cuemaker recently saying he was in Spain and got robbed and needed help. The next day I got another one from him (the actual person) saying that someone had hijacked his account as was trying to run a scam. So this sounds like the same scam, just different players.

Well, I just tried calling him and got voice mail. I agree its probably a hoax but how can we know for sure?

If I were in trouble and needed help, the first thing I did wouldn't be to send a mass email asking for help from people on a pool forum. I would pick up the phone and call someone that was close to me.

Scam Alert

Don Sherman owns Sureman Cuse. He sells high end collectible cues. He posts here occasionally (Sureman183). He's a decent, honest guy as far as I know and I am certain this is not from him. Just some rotten scammer.

It's a common scam. Somebody hacked Don'e e-mail account and e-mailed his address book. Don needs to get into his account if he can and change the password. It's been going on for years. If you respond they would then ask for a Western Union payment or bank transfer.

I've received similar e-mails over the years. Here's a link to a page describing the scam:

Its a scam Jack. Someone or some bot got ahold of Don's info and is trying to take advantage of people.

Whoever it is, they should have figured out a more likely place to get mugged than London.

It's a scam. I'm always worried that someday I'll really end up in London with my stuff stolen and everyone will *think* it's a scam :)
