Watched a dvd with him playing. it looked to me like he was a pretty big guy. Ive often thought I was to big (muscular) to play really good, but after seeing him Id say there is hope. Do you think he can bench 300... hes got to be close..

I do think he can bench 300. I am of a rather slight build and have put up 265 lbs. However, when I did one rep max sets, I was not at my strongest. The point is: Donny Mills is at least 3 inches taller than me and he looks like he has a naturally big build.

Just my 0.02 after seeing a few pictures of Mr. Mills.

Do you mean a max of 300lbs or sets with 300lbs? If you mean a max then I would have to say I'd be shocked if he couldn't do over 300 lbs. When I was a teenager I maxed 260 lbs at a bodyweight of 126 lbs. Now I'll admit that I was very good at pressing but still there were guys I knew then maxing around 315 and they were smaller than Donnie Mills.

Of course, if he doesn't bench press at all then he won't be able to do it. I knew a guy with a similar build as Mills and all he did for his chest was loads of pushups and parallel bar dips, but couldn't press more than 250 lbs.

i doubt he goes really heavy, its hard on the shoulders and elbows. Its pretty much impossible to not injure a shoulder or and elbow when you go heavy trying to get a big bench. You must learn the technique on how to bench  my brother is 6 1 240 and benches 410 for 3 reps and is all natural, theres a guy in his gym thats around 180 and my bro tells me he does 465 for reps.

82.5 kg / 181 lbs Bench Press Alexander Johnson 120.00 264.50 9/2009 Cleveland, OH

You should have competed nationally. Here is a national record holder at 182 pounds who only benched 264.50 pounds .

There is no way those are national records. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet. If they were national records, I'm sure that most of them wouldn't be blank.

A guy I used to work with went to the same gym as me. I saw him bench 415lbs weighing only 145lbs. This guy was a powerhouse (he was also a former gymnast and only 5'5"). I'm pretty sure he was not natural, but even with juice, three times your body weight is amazing. I would not believe it was possible if I hadn't witnessed it myself.

As far as Donny, I would believe if he regularly works the bench that 300 would be within his capability. For the record, I believe that bench press has very little to do with overall strength. It doesn't really add to core strength and doesn't translate to other muscle groups. Having a good bench is only good for having a good bench, but that's what people are always impressed with for some reason.

I'm sure he can. Or he should be able to. He's bigger that I ever was and I could bench a little over 300 at my peak. If you do a search on working out and playing pool, you will find him on the thread discussing his feeling on the subject. Not to put words in his mouth, but he think it doesn't affect his game after an hour or so of recovery.

It always hurt my game for the rest of the day after a workout, but the next day I was always good to go. On the same day as a workout, I would be shaky with my muscles twitching. Everybody is different.

Donny may be able to max at over 300 lbs., but the wear and tear to maintain it would be hard on his pool game. Another factor is his height. He looks to be over 6 ft. tall. This could make benching tougher at heavier weights. The smaller compact guys have the advantage here with the shorter move.

I also can't believe the record only being around 265 lbs. at 180 lbs. Years ago at a svelte 180 I could beat that just working out. Didn't help my pool game though.

Best,
Mike

From what I recall of the few conversations I have had with Donny about Benching, he does not flat bench due to it irritating one of his shoulders.

His chest workouts revolve around dumbbell presses.
