Doubling the bet...trap?

Does anyone else find it annoying when people continually want to double the bet every time they lose a close set?

-set 1 bet: $20...win (up $20)
-set 2 bet: $40...win (up $60)
-set 3 bet: $60...loss (back to even)

They always make me feel bad b/c im basically playing with free money in the last set but since the game is close they know im eventually going to lose and we end up breaking even when technically I won 2 out of 3 sets.

Maybe I'm just a sucker and I need to stand my ground more. What do you guys think?

Don't lose the only one that matters!!

Don't lose the money match, winning the first two has no value if you are risking it all on the one you can't win. IMO this is purely mental, you won the first two, why can't you do the same in the third? You are not getting hustled if your opponent is breaking even. I think you just need to believe you can win and you will take the bankroll home.

I personally hate the double or nothing bet. Why would you risk all the money on something that took twice as long to build. I feel they should have to work just as hard to get back what they lost.

No offense CJ.

to tell the truth it annoys me when they don't

if you don't like the double up when you win
when do you

i have always been amazed to see people, who usually lose ,clam up when they get ahead

the time to raise the bet is when you are ahead
1.because you feel good
2.suckers always lose more when they are trying to catch up
3.it is usually time to quit at any form of gambling when you are behind, and play progressively higher when you are ahead
4.disregard this rule if you are playing Jack Cooney,he might let you win in order to
set the hook
5.Don't expect everyone of acting or being Jack Cooney,if that were the case
you should take up needle point

Deanoc is the teacher

I can see both sides...it is frustrating to win it at a lower bet and give it back at a higher one, but taking the double it up route is how huge scores is be made.

There was this guy in NYC, he was playing the cook in a poolroom 8 ball and they started out at 20/game and the cook lost the firs game. The went double or nothing and the cook lost again. They repeated that pattern, until the cook lost 20 in a row.

Do the math.

You're not doubling your bet if you only gamble 60 in the third set.

Soooo, what was the 4th set played for? $120? If your opponent likes doubling the bet that is what the next set should have been played for right? Even match? Sooner or later one of you goes home really broke.

Only those with nuts like almond joy double it again, after losing it back to zero.

I did the math and the guy made 20 million dollars total.

It's actually worse than that. This is called a martingale betting system. No matter how many times you double down, if you win the last set you will always come out ahead exactly the amount of the first bet.

For example:

First bet: you bet 5 dollars and lose, you are down 5 dollars total.
Second bet: you bet 10 dollars and lose, you are down 15 dollars total.
Third bet: you bet 20 dollars and lose, you are down 35 dollars total.
Fourth bet: you bet 40 dollars and win, you are now up 5 dollars.

The martingale (doubling after every loss) is OK if you win eventually but it can get very expensive quickly. Julius Caesar is known to have lost very badly using this simple martingale system to include land and money.

If someone is doubling the bet against you after losing and you accept, you are being played for a fool. It is impossible to ever break even when you do this.

Possibly. Another possibility is that the otherguy thinks he will be ably to apply himself better for double the bet.

Guarantee ,if I am playing a 2/3 set for $25 1p, I am lost the first game and trail by 5 or more balls and they are all up table...I am gonna be like blue hog rider after a Mexican feast: shit gonna be flyin e'rewhere.

Now, if we are playin $25/ game and I am one down, I am gonna play far differently.

(And you can consider the #s arbitrary, I never bet that much. I gotta work all day to bring home that kind o money!)

No. It would be 160.. 20 -40-80-160-320

As another poster pointed out, this is similar to the Martingale betting system, whereby a gambler doubles the bet every time they lose to ensure when they win a bet, they will be up overall.

However, it's a dangerous strategy unless the gambler has an unlimited bankroll! Just imagine you had won another 2 sets (for 60 and then 120), your opponent would have to bet 240 just to get even!

Chasing losses is often the sign of a problem gambler, although it all depends on how much someone can afford to lose.

You won 2 of 3 sets so maybe you're a slight favourite? In that case, there's no reason why you can't win 5 or 6 sets in a row and if your opponent keeps doubling, you win will soon add up!

However if you're not comfortable with a bet, then don't make it! Don't let the opponent dictate to you and there's nothing wrong with hanging on to your winnings.

I don't do it. It is what is called a "Martingale system"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martingale_(betting_system)

Probability they will win at some point and may even quit you if they do.
It also takes the pressure off them as they are never down and just one game away from even.

No matter how you look at it it can not go on long as the number will quickly get high if they don't win soon. Also "NEVER" lower the bet once you have raised it. $80 a game is $80 a game. Not $80 for one game and back to $20.

Right. You can't be afraid to take off scores..... People underestimate the power of other people chasing their own money.

One time after I first started playing I was giving a regular customer the 7, races to 7 for $50, I was up 6 sets @ $300. He said that he had would play one last set for the $300, I said "Heads!". He wins the flip, breaks and runs the set out on me!!!! He either made the 7 or 9 on the break or made a combo on them all 7 games. Never even made a shot he intended, slopped in every ball, the whole set took less than 15 minutes.
