Doug Patrick - Not A Thief

Road trip! Go take a table for your troubles.
C'mon, Ideologist. You are usually right on target. Others have advanced what I consider a far more reasonable resolution. Please consider the following as a possible result of your proposal that OP pay AH a visit.

OP travels to AH's home turf and encounters him in a highly charged atmosphere which is subject to rapid deterioration, ultimately leading to who knows what. In this day, one dead and another jailed would not be a shocking or unpredictable result. But, let's say their little reunion simply produces loud, nasty talk, a few punches, and a bit of blood, who shows up? You got it -- the cops. And, of course, one of the boys in blue will have just happened to have played high school football with AH, and now, well now . . .

Y'all smell that? Of course you do. It's the smell of that good old "homecooking" for which downstate Illinois is famous. (Damn hard to forget once encountered and identified the hard way.) Mind you, "it's nothing personal . . . folks what ain't from around here should learn to stay where they from".

This is one dispute better left unresolved. The word is out on AH. OP, as well as all others so informed, have the benefit of a very valuable lesson.

$200 sure isn’t much for a deposit. Is this guy even on AzB to defend himself? For so little money I would’ve handled this privately like a gentleman. Sorry you got taken for a ride but live and learn.
Kinda hard to handle it like a gentleman when the cuemaker won't reply to the OP at all...sounds like he tired to do just that

I will wait until things are finalized to say more, but Doug has reached out to me and there should be a resolution soon.

I will say I've never had any intentions of doing anything stupid over a measly $200. Physical confrontation or legal actions have never entered my mind.

This post was meant as a warning to the pool community.

More to come soon.

I'm not encouraging violence, but the police back you up in a property seizure if there is a documented debt. You can file a civil order on the drive in. If he showed up with a county sheriff and said "my money or a pool table" the sheriff would clear a space for him to break the table down and move it out if the money wasn't handed over.

I agree. I mistook you as urging extrajudicial action. Here, we would file suit and obtain a judgement in Miss. small claims court, then enroll our foreign judgement in Illinois, using Ill. law and courts then file a request for seizure and sale (whatever Illinois law provides). Obviously, you either need to know the relevant law of two states or have the services of a lawyer, or lawyers, with same.

Ultimately, "not enough sugar for a dime."

**UPDATE** I honestly didn’t want to post this about Doug, but if someone else is in the same position, or was thinking about getting a cue made by him, I think they deserve to know. I wrote off the $200 months ago after getting the run around for a couple of years. It was a lesson learned, and I’d never try to go after him through the legal system for that little of an amount. So the post here on AZB was more of a let the pool community know. Now my Facebook post….. slightly different story.

I may have created a meme of him. I have a lot of FB connections in the pool world, and my meme was shared a lot, so it wasn’t long before Doug contacted me. He has been very apologetic, even with my couple of insults. He has refunded me and said he will still make the cue and send pictures when it’s done. If I choose to purchase it, he will sell it to me at a discounted price.

So perhaps I misjudged him. He is definitely not a thief, just a slow cue maker that has had a couple struggles in life and lacked some communication skills. For the record, if and when he builds the cue, there is a very good chance I will buy it. He seemed very sincere and he makes a hell of a cue.

At this point I would move on.
Once burnt twice shy.
Got the run around for a couple years?
What does that tell you?

Thanks for the warning. No one else wants to be treated this way either. There are too many reputable cuemakers out there to get involved with one who will jack you around. Honesty remains the best policy in any dealings, business or otherwise.

I understand but I do believe in second chances and he has made things right. Not to mention I'm a sucker for a pretty cue, and since this is my design, I may think it's real pretty when I see it!

I have held off on writing this for quite some time trying to give him time, but I think it's time to warn the pool community. In short, I gave a deposit to Doug Patrick of Patrick Custom Cues back in Jul 2018, and was told it would take about 9 months. After far too many excuses over a 2 year period, he's started ghosting me.

I will say that I was more than patient, and courteous in all my correspondence. I never sent an angry email and when I asked for my deposit back I did so very politely.

Here is the timeline

Jul 2018 - I reached out to Doug Patrick about making a custom cue. He said he would be able to make the cue in about 9 months. I sent him a $200 deposit on July 11, 2018.
Jan 2019 – I reached out for a progress update, he said still on track for April/May 2019
Jun 2019 – I reached out and he said he was moving shops and was shut down for 90 days max. He said mine would be the first one worked on once he was up and running.
Sep 2019 – I reached out and he agreed to make it 60” and have an extension made.
Dec 2019 – I reached out and was told it would be Feb 2020.
Apr 2020 – I reached out again, and was told end of June 2020.
June 2020 - I reached out once again and was told he was opening next week and would get up with me

That was the last time he responded to me. I have emailed several times, called a few times (voicemail box is full), yet no responses from him.

Not once did he initiate a conversation about missing any of the due dates.

He posts on FB regularly, I think he owns/runs some restaurant or something perhaps.

So beware!! Don't give that thief any money. He's just another sorry cue maker that is out to rob people. Its sad because he does make a fantastic

I understand why you felt the need to provide the update, but why did you feel the need to change the title of your thread? Quite obviously this guy only refunded your $200 because of the bad PR he’s received from your original posting.

He had his chance to do the right thing a long time ago and didn’t. I wouldn’t hold your breath for that cue being made, as it’s obvious at this point his word means nothing. At least you did get your deposit back.

Honestly, I changed the title because he gave me my refund back, so in my mind he's not a thief. I have read too many stories about true thieves on this forum, and Doug does not fit the part. Sure, he was pretty bad at communicating, but he gave me my deposit back so I can't call the man a thief.

Fair enough, but don't feel guilty for your original post title. Sadly, this is what it took for you to get your deposit back.

No guilt here. I thought a long time before posting and I am being honest with everyone about everything.

I hope he makes the cue, and you get it and love it. I, too, am a sucker...for a good ending to a tough story.

Glad you got your deposit back, at the very least
