If you found a pre-shot routine and way of looking at a shot that greatly increased your ability to pocket balls, but it feels and looks funny, would you use it?? What if it looked so ridiculous that you thought people would question you everytime you shot??

Does consistency win out if you don't like the way you look when you play and it makes you self conscious??

trust me.....

It doesnt matter how unconventional a method you use, if it works, it works. people will only comment on how many racks you're stringing together...

look at maccready's side stroke, you'll hear a hell of a lot more talk about how great he played rather than the funny lookin unconventional sidearm stroke of his....

I've never much cared how I looked at the table as much as I cared how good the balls look when I split the pocket.

I wouldn't care what other people think about how I play as long as I could play.

Consistency beats good looks any day.

Are you kidding? Something that looks ridiculous but works great is the hustler's holy grail. :D

There's nothing cool about always missing balls. So it's better to look weird and run out than to be smooth and inept.

That said, in my experience any drastic improvement in ability, drastically goes back down within a day or two. Improvement doesn't come in leaps and bounds, rather in crawls and trips. I remember putting more weight on my left leg and all of the sudden I was immediately better. So I came back intending to focus on putting more weight on my left leg, because clearly that's the secret. Didn't take long before I started missing every third ball.

The only drastic improvement I've ever had that stuck involved adjustments to my alignement. It felt strange for a while but eventually I got used to it, I got even better.

Any change to your process will feel a bit weird, just have to stick with it until it's habit.

I don't know... I like to look cool, but if you not getting out than you can't be looking that cool:cool::cool::cool:

Does me doing the "airplane" between shots constitute as being unconventional? If it does, then so be it. I also sing Lakeside's "Fantastic Voyage" as I play. When I'm gonna have to play safe, it's Prince's "Diamonds and Pearls." I'm getting pretty good at it. Most people dread it when I switch to Prince, the tiny, kinky black man. (No, not African-American. He's never lived in Africa. I don't say anything when I'm called white. I don't ask to be called Irish, Anglo-Saxon American, do I? I only brought this up because of SOMEONE that started crap with me the last time I referred to a buddy of mine and used the word "black.")

always try for consistency and "function over fashion".

but from this arises your dilemma. You will pocket more balls, but you may also miss more shots if you are worrying about what people think of you while you shoot.

I would question it, figure out what I'm doing right... and try to find a more conventional way that keeps the "good parts" and gets rid of the goofy-looking parts.

It's not that I care about what people think of my stance/stroke/whatever, I just think good pool can and should be played in a simple way. You don't need anything weird looking or complicated to do the job.

If you stick with a funky sidearm stroke with 20 or 30 years of shooting then it can get you there.

But if you improve by going from a fairly textbook shooting method to something exotic, you have to figure out why that new method is helping you make balls.

If common sense tells you that spinning the stick three times before hitting the cue ball shouldn't affect the shot, then you're probably right. So you figure out what it is about that ritual that's helping you. Then mix that special something with your original, grooved-in textbook stroke. The result should be just as good.

That's some bullsheet movie script that WRONGLY sterotypes the black man. Hopefully, most who saw that movie understands that it was just movie bullsheet.

I don't know any MAN who would rather look good and lose, than win and look bad. That especially applies to the pool world and gambling.
