Driving Me Bonkers

I finally figured out why women tend not to be as good as men in pool.

Damn men won't leave us alone long enough to do drills or practice shots. Plus 'Free Advice' really just pisses you off and thereby sharks you.

So to all the men on here, leave us alone!

No, we do not want to play with you when we are doing drills.
No, we do not want you to tell us why we missed the ball when you can't seem to figure out why you miss 4 balls in a rack.
No, we do not want you to keep insisting on playing us a game or giving us pointers when we tell you to go away.
No, we do not want you to sit down and stare at us while we are playing a game or doing drills.
No, we do not want you to walk up to the table while we are playing the ghost and attempt to engage us in conversation.

So shoo!

Lady, you just became invisible.

Some years ago, a young and pretty lady took a membership card at the pool club I was playing at. She had gotten hooked on pool 2 or 3 months before and I saw her come every day at the pool hall for a couple of weeks. She was playing like a beginner, and had a bad case of chicken wing when she was shooting. I didn't say anything, since I usually don't offer advice to anybody unless I'm asked to.

One day she came to me and said "I heard you give pool lessons. I could use some" so I said sure. We went to a table, and I told her she played crooked. I told her to get down on the shot, freeze before shooting, and I'd correct her rear arm. She did, and as soon as I touched her arm, she got back up and snapped "don't touch me!". So I said "Miss, I don't mean to..." and she said "don't you "miss" me, it's ma'am. You sexist men, you think you can patronize women, how dare you say "miss" and touch me? I didn't give you permission!" yada yada.

She raved on for 5 minutes on how women were free now and she could take care of herself thank you very much. So in the end, I got tired of her ultra-militant feminist bullshit, and I said "Fine. You can take care of yourself then? Race to 5 for 50 euros. Think you can handle, Miss?" with the most disgustingly sweet smile I could muster. She said "Sure! Let's play pool!". She was so mad :) I whooped her 5-0, took the money and told her "Ma'am, that was the first lesson. For the following lessons, you'll have to find yourself another teacher. I doubt he'll charge you nothing like I do..." and I left.

I never saw her again...

It's simply the fundamental difference in the way men and women think.

And that's just the way it is and always will be.

I guess my point is if someone offers advice and you don't want or need it just tell them your interrupting my practice; I have a coach thank you very much.

I think men who are honest with themselves will admit that they're much more likely to offer unsolicited advice to a cute woman than to a man. That's not a crime, but it can be annoying if you're a woman and it happens several times every time you walk into a new pool room.

And it's not only distracting; the fact that it happens so much more often to women makes it condescending too.

Honestly, men are probably better at women in pool because of evolution and the general trend that in primates the male of the species tends to be the hunter and thus is genetically disposed to increase their physical attributes that increase the chance of success in this activity. One can look back at the evolution of Homo sapiens and see that the male of the species was the one that needed to be physically able to throw a spear accurately, shoot a arrow, throw a rock, ect... this type of thing made them more likely to successfully spread their genetic code and thus evolution favored those males. Women had emphasis on other things that lead to their own success in successfully spreading their genetic code and thus evolution simply created a disparity in the male/female of the species.

We simply are not created equal, millions and millions of years and countless generations of our ancestors created certain differences based on reproductive success of individuals leading to an overall evolutionary trend of the entire population. There are genetic chances of a female being quite gifted at the things that make a person great at pool, but it is more unlikely then the chance for a male, and the chance of a female being as naturally gifted at the game as that rare male who tops the charts of natural talent and attributes is extremely remote. That is why there is no women who plays at the level of the top 20 men in the world, the odds just do not favor the chance of that taking place.

All of that said the norms of society are also a hurdle, women are not "expected" to be great at the game, and it is a hurdle for them to have the confidence in themselves to rise above the expectations of the masses. So women get a double whammy, they are hit by a genetic unlikelyhood of having the skills to match a Orcullo and then they also get nailed with society attempting to tell them "they cannot win" even if they happen to have been lucky enough to have that natural talent to have a chance of being that good.

Celtic...This has been debated to death, but the bottomline is this. You're wrong! There is ZERO reason women cannot be just as good as men at any pool game. Some guys debate that women are weaker, therefore they cannot break as hard, but that argument doesn't hold water either. The break is about timing, not strength (otherwise the 800 gorilla would have the best break...and they don't). Want to really know why men are better? It's because they've had 100+ years of strong competition. Women, by contrast, have been playing competitively for really less than 30 years (and the improvement overall in women in pool has been most dramatic in the past 10 years). They will catch up, and you will see men playing side by side with the women, in terms of skill. Will it happen in my lifetime? I don't know...but it will happen.

As far as Debbie R. goes...she definitely qualifies as a "hottie", and does play in high heels. She has a huge competitive drive, is very confident, and possesses some skill at the table. She's had lessons from some great players, and has a pretty good routine. Like most players, she could benefit from getting some instruction that included video analysis.

Thanks Scott!

But I will have you know, I do not play in heels. I keep a pair of ballet flats in my case. I just wear the heels on my way in and out of the pool room. I have enough variables in my game, I like to keep the height of my tush fixed. :)

Debbie...You were wearing heels when you were playing with David, the last time I saw you at Pressure. I'm glad you don't play in them all the time...like you said, one less variable to consider! Best wishes in your quest for your best game!

Whether men are better pool players than women, or women are better than men is not the issue here. The point is, Miss Debbieutante needs to lose the attitude, or else the only people in the poolroom that will have anything to do with her will be the skanks and scumbags that come in for a beer and a shot.

That's fine, as long as it's just the skanks and scumbags and not the "Tramps"...

We are going to disagree with this. I am a fairly practical realist when it comes to stuff like this. Men and women are not created equal, we work differently and as much as any human might wish we were "above" evolution and biological differences that affect each gender it is simply not the case. Males and females are different and the number of medical and scientific studies done to study the differences in the way the two genders work fill entire sections of university libraries if anyone is interested in researching it.

For a REALLY basic start one simply has to read these.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biology_of_gender

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_differentiation

The key aspects being not in the physical differentiation, but in the brain and psychological differentiation.

http://www.cerebromente.org.br/n11/mente/eisntein/cerebro-homens.html

That stuff is important, especially when you look at

One of the most interesting differences appear in the way men and women estimate time, judge speed of things, carry out mental mathematical calculations, orient in space and visualize objects in three dimensions, etc. In all these tasks, women and men are strikingly different, as they are too in the way their brains process language.

We are different, we think differently, we have different hormones that create both physical and mental differences between males and females. This can and does have an affect on how we do things.

Celtic...I guess we'll have to agree to disagree! I certainly agree with your last statement below. We are all built differently, think differently, learn differently...but that is not about the sexes. It's just the way humans are. IMO, it has no bearing on whether women can become equal with men at pool. I say again...it will happen...eventually.

Celtic:
...men are probably better at women in pool because of evolution

Probably not. I think the best explanation is one nicely illustrated by Mike Page long ago:

If you were offered the opportunity to bet on a match between the best ten players in (say) Fargo, North Dakota vs. the best ten players in the rest of the world, which would you back?

Of course you'd choose the players from the bigger pool. There's no physical reason that the best players from Fargo shouldn't be the best players in the world, but there's a very convincing statistical reason: you're much more likely to find the best players among a randomly chosen 99% of players than among the remaining 1%.

This works in time as well as in numbers: men have been playing pool in great numbers for much longer than women, so the talent pool for men is not only much larger, but much more highly developed. Add to that the social stigma attached to pool players themselves, let alone to women who play this seedy men's game, and... well, you get the idea.

Always a logical seeming answer, the sheer numbers theory. Always leads to this same question though:

Are there more male Filipinos playing pool or more women playing pool worldwide?

Hu

You can always ask someone.....

You can always ask someone the question, would you rather pick the best ten players in Manila, or the best ten women in the world????

Hey Debbie....On days that you really want some good practice time, play with an mp3 player on. I use an Ipod shuffle, which is small and clips to your shirt. It doesn't seem to get in the way for me (I run the cords behind my head), and it really cuts down on people coming up to talk to you. If people do come talk to you still, make a big deal about cutting off your music, tell them "sorry I am practicing and listening to my music, I didn't hear you". If they have good advice, you can always take the ipod off and use the opportunity to get the free lessons. If they are just hitting on you, make sure to leave your music on if they try to talk to you again and just shake your head and point to your earplugs (meaning...sorry I can't hear you and I'm not turning off my music for you, so please leave me alone). Good luck with your drills!!
