Dump

I'd say yes. I know road players who do it all the time. To say pros are above doing this is just ridiculous.

The question was about top players. You don't get to be a top player thinking you can't win events. Damned seldom you can dump and make more money than you can winning the event. Vegas years ago was a rare exception that is bound to come up.

I have had lower level guys with backers come to me wanting to dump. My reply was always the same. "I'm going to beat your ass and keep all of it, why should I give you a split?" Anybody looking to dump couldn't beat me anyway.They didn't think they could beat me to begin with, that is why they were wanting to bet both ends against the middle. They surely weren't going to beat me after trying to cut a backroom deal. My confidence was over the top, not that it was ever lacking.

We're not talking about Corey's performance last night are we?

Cause the first 5 games he played did not look like any of the others. He started to make odd decisions (safe on the last 4 balls on a hill-hill game when they were all open from a guy who shot carom-combo kicks all night?) and missed pretty easy shots.
 
How many times have you heard stories of a backer getting double-crossed in a money match? What makes tourney matches any different if there is rail action to be had?

Sadly, our game is filled with dirt bags who are willing to do this and I believe that tourneys are no different when the dollar signs flash in their eyes.

It's happened in every other sport. Are we supposed to believe that pool players are made of a higher moral fiber... We all know better than that.
 
And believe me, some future Hall of Famer's are just as treacherous as the ones already inducted.
 
You have to understand, there is a difference in dumping and splitting a tournament. Sometimes when there is a big difference between first and second place, the players wil agree to split. Usually they are the only ones that know about it, and they are still playing for the glory. The only thing wrong with the split is if someone has them in a calcutta. I have split a few tournaments myself, but usually because it's 3:30 in the morning. LOL
 
as with ninjas, belly dancers, and politicians the secret lives of top speed pool players are amorphous and, on occasion, not immune to miscreant behavior
 
A far fetched hypothetical scenario involving Players A and B; Player A a regular player in local tourneys demanding top dollar in the players auction. Player B, newcomer which sells for minimum bid. Player A only owns half his own action because of high bidding locals. Player A and Player B meet in finals, curiously enough Player A hangs many balls and unfortunately succombs to the onslaught. Payouts are given, someone notices A and B getting in the same car to leave after the nights action. Hmmm....only the letters have been changed to protect the innocent. Dump is such a harsh word.
Do the math when top players compete in events. I think the term is "Maxamizing Cash Options".

Every person is built differently. So it would be kind of naive to assume all top pros think the same way about it. Logically, a certain percentage are willing to do it and the rest are not. No idea how big the percentage is...maybe it's 1% maybe it's 40%.

So then it just becomes a matter of opportunity. In tournament play I think the opportunity comes up less often than in gambling.

Probably more common is when finalists split the pot. That's basic bird-in-hand stuff. But probably a large majority of pros don't do this either, because they aren't in it for the money. A lot of them were shooting great from the time they were teenagers and didn't have bills to pay. They got where they are by loving the game and wanting to be the best, and that doesn't go away once you get older and play even stronger.
 
Probably little dumping by top pros in big tourneys.
But local/regional tourneys in my area: several players will team up and divide their winnings. If one player gets matched up with another, the player with the best chance of winning the tourney will win that match. Period.
And don't even think about getting in a ring game with these guys...

I think Superstar is probably right. Money is not easy to come by even as a top player, and pool players are always playing the odds...

I've known a lot of pool players with shaky ethics who happened to be very good players. They get a little better, and you've got top players with questionable ethics. It's not as if a jump in ability has a corresponding morality boost.

People will be people, whether they're pool players or not.
 
Am sure someone did...

Remember fews years ago , a pro player lost to certain Prince. There is even a thread about it. Can someone look it up?
