DVD Review- CJ Wiley's Million Dollars Challenge

Who made the money

Sad part to all of this is that Earl practiced and played 1000's and 1000's and 1000's of hours to build his skill level to achieve this task. Overcame incredible odds and did it.

but the attorneys are the ones that got the money...

Its sad

I don't know if I'm reading your statement correctly, but it seems to me that you are saying balls will "hydroplane" some when it gets more humid?

I think the opposite may be more likely. It always seems to me that the tables play slower when it gets real humid.

No, I was just quoting what Danny Diliberto said during a commentary. I was kinda puzzled that he would say such a thing since both personal experience and conventional wisdom indicate that the table plays slower as the humidity rises, at least as a general rule.

I also heard Earl say that the balls get water on them in air conditioned rooms. This would be a rare occurance IMO because AC takes water out of the air as it cools it. Again, this is a general rule, and I can think of circumstances where the dew point rises to the point where condensation occurs. The tricks CJ mentions might be to leave the door open in an air conditioned room when it's muggy outside... or to have steam from nearby food vendors be allowed to condense onto the cold surface of the balls. ;)

Always been the case as far as you look back. When you live in a land with too many laws, it will be ruled by too many lawyers.

I've been a reader on here for 6 or 7 yrs. A signed in member for only a couple of yrs and only started posting recently.CJ has gone from a MAJOR road player up to #3 in the world back in the 90's.Turning that success into buying and running one of the top Pool Halls in the US, CJ Billiard Palace. After winning 89k in the ESPN World Open he opens Carson night club, in which I was told was a major meat market. Meaning LOTS of men and women and major volumes of drinks being sold. If there is another player out there with CJ Wileys success I'd like to know who they are. You got SVB in todays world making major $$, You got Billy Incardona which opened a Major pool hall in Dallas a few yrs back and steps up and backs Scott Frost playing Dippy Dave 100k sets.(meaning the man made lots of $$ playing pool and has the brains to know how to manage his $$) Those two in my mind are success stories from the degenerate world of playing pool for a living. I guess on a smaller scale JA(scorpion) would be consider a success. All the others are broke or have been several times in their lives. I think AZ Billiard is very lucky to have CJ speaking his wisdom to the people that love pool as much I and many others on here. I'm looking forward to buying the DVD or buying it off the ppv. On another note: People like Neil , Wedge(Mr Wilson),Prewarhero and many other MAJOR nits get a life and stop crying all the time. So when we do read your stupid post we don't have to say, wow what a freaking "SIMPLETON" that idiots is. CJ Wiley had a gear that nobody could touch in the 90's.(except maybe Earl.) I saw CJ get up and play Efren even for 38k who the Hell else was doing that !!!! Keep doing your thing CJ, would love to see you back in gear. DAVE from Waco,TX.

he LIKED a good fight..... this was ideal for him.

The lawyers only got a portion of the money, and it was a substantial amount. I do feel they earned their portion because they went up against GIANTS and won!!!

Very few attorneys would do what they did, luckily I had trained for 5 years in martial arts with our lead counsel, and knew he LIKED a good fight..... this was ideal for him.

In retrospect everything always turns out for the best, IF we find a way to make the best out of it....this is one of those examples times 10.

Can a movie or TV show come of this documentary? No one knows, but it has a "shot" and that's all we can ask for. We will continue to put effort, funds and knowledge into helping the Game get back on it's feet.....it's the least we can do for our "Teacher".

TOI is very effective in Florida and Philippines.

Yes, humidity slows the table down because it creates more friction. On the other hand, the rails speed up, so the table becomes tricky. This is the best time to play the "NO SPIN" game using just a "touch" of inside.....it's very effective in Florida and Philippines.

I prefer to play the "NO SPIN" game and I also prefer slower tables. Must be because I grew up playing in the "old school" days. :)

One thing I'm still unsure about in Earl's run. Was the game where he made the one-nine combo the actual last game (game 11) or did he have to run one more because he didn't let Jay rack soon enough? I'm confused because the celebrating was after the one-nine combo game, but then it was said, Earl actually ran another rack (after the celebrating) and it turned out that was needed to get the payoff.

If he did have to run one more, was it on tape? Seems like if it wasn't that would have been a problem with the insurance payoff.

anything that's presented in an entertaining, intelligent format, pool's no exception

I appreciate you taking the time to provide your opinion to the forum. We're in a "research and development" stage and follow the simple plan (right now) of putting together what's necessary to boost pocket billiards back into the public awareness. We feel strongly the million dollar challenge 'BIlliard's Perfect Miss' is the best way to start.

We do have our work cut out, and fortunately the resistance is not in "the world," it's in the "pool world". "The World" is ready for anything that's presented in an entertaining, intelligent format, pool's no exception, it's "The Sample Example"

There are many optimistic people that enjoy the Game, it's mystique, and hope for it's success.... we always enjoy interacting with people like yourself....it makes it all worthwhile to know someone appreciates the attempt that we're making.

Happy New Year, and may 2014 bring you many positive experiences.

Excellent post!

One thing I'm still unsure about in Earl's run. Was the game where he made the one-nine combo the actual last game (game 11) or did he have to run one more because he didn't let Jay rack soon enough? Earl had to run 11 because he wouldn't let Jay rack when it became required. No one knew that the 11th rack was required at the time. If he would have not ran the 11th it would have been a huge tragedy.

I think Jay would have felt partially responsible if Earl didn't run that 11th rack for not saying, "EARL YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM THE MILLION IF YOU DONT LET ME RACK NOW!!!"

My biggest question is what the hell was the camera man doing zooming in on the one ball and not even coming close to capturing the nine drop.

If I'm the insurance company I'm saying, "yeah all you guys are friends and agreed to cheer if the shot was made or not. You get nothing! You lose. Good day, sir!"

It is said that it won't be revealed why the insurance company fought it but I wonder if that was part of it.

The 10th rack was the "million dollar combination," and as far as everyone knew it was the one that counted. We did have the 11th rack Earl ran on tape (it's in the documentary), and it really put a "stamp of verification" so there would be no objection to Jay racking less games that required.

Here's another clip {from 'Billiard's Perfect Miss'} of Jay Helfert explaining how much pressure there is to "racking for a million," let alone playing for a million. Few will ever "real eyes" what it {really} takes to perform with that much on the line......it's funny to think of "dogging" the rack, but that's precisely what Jay was concerned with......listen to him describe the situation:

we make it clear who the "camera person" is.....it's Angela Wiley,

No, that had nothing to do with the law suit whatsoever....and when you see the documentary we make it clear who the "camera person" is.....it's Angela Wiley, my ex wife. She was "Miss Texas" according to Jimmy "Pretty Boy Floyd" Mataya..... certainly a "10"! - so we can "cut her some slack" on her camera skills. ;)

Just received my copy and watched it since the snow is blocking our satellite and I can't see anything on TV.

It's a very nice biographical look at this historic moment in pool. There are nice interviews with Jay Helfert, Earl Strickland, and CJ Wiley dispersed through the video (although the volume control is poor and they are often sitting in what looks like a police interrogation room).

Included is the the actual footage of the last 4 racks, followed by the celebration. It does not include rack "11", however. Unfortunately, the footage is poor since this feat was done early in the tournament and not on the "TV" table with a professional camera operator. Nevertheless, it is historic footage and I'm glad to own it.

So, it is definitely worth the money and I'm glad to have this in my pool library, but you have to remember that this was done in 1996 and the footage and conditions were very different then. Don't judge the quality based on today's technology.

Cheers,
Steve

Go to Menu, Extra Clips, and then Last Racks to see rack 11 included after the celebration. It's incredible in hindsight to witness Earl run out rack 11 almost as an afterthought, not knowing that rack 11 actually counted as rack 10 of his runout, and that the 1M was still on the line in that runout.

The 11th rack is definitely on the Documentary,

The 11th rack is definitely on the Documentary, it's where it tries to bank the one ball and carom the 9 Ball and misses both by "a hair".

what'd he sink on the break, so that he was up for the 1-9 combo?

Pinky, I am going to go out on a limb here and take a wild guess.

It was either, the 2,3,4,5,6,7, or just maybe the 8.

At your service as always.
