Right after Earl won the last game of the night he went over and talked to Shane. Earl told Shane good shooting and that he thought tomorrow would be interesting. He said, "I had you down 18 and you fought back. If you went into tomorrow down 18 I think it would be too tough for you. Being down 10 I think you have a chance if you play well. You shot a lot better today, see you tomorrow."
It was the nicest I have seen Earl since the match started. I don't know if he had a moment of clarity or what but he seemed very relaxed and excited for a brief few minutes. Shane was smiling and talking with him, it seemed like none of the other crap had went down.
Earl really does love this game as much as anyone could. There have been a couple times in the match that Shane made a great shot and got a bad roll or barely missed his shape. Earl's eyes lit up when Shane would make a good shot and you could tell Earl was rooting for him to do well. Shane barely got hooked after a pretty daunting shot and Earl got mad, waiving at the table saying, "come on, he doesn't deserve that, that was a great shot."
If that Earl showed up more often I think many more would embrace him. After watching him live for a long match like this, I can tell he is sick and needs help. He has moments where he is calm and you wouldn't be able to tell anything was wrong. Despite all of the crap, Earl is still one of the best that ever lived. I hope the last night will be one for the ages and Shane can keep pushing to make this one a nail biter.
