george rodriguez, an up and coming player, whipped/spanked/pounded the great earl strickland 5-0 in the wednesday evening local tournament at master billiards in sunnyside queens, new york. george played great pool.

after the win, george had a smile on his face. he ran three racks, had one two inning game and shot a long combo on the nine. classic nine ball...and classic earl. earl was seen talking to himself, invisible people and a brick wall after a very humiliating defeat. earl did not make ONE BALL during the set.

I wouldn't exactly call it a whooping considering it was only a race to 5. Anything can happen.

I would still consider it a whooping, especially again't someone as great as Strickland.

don't say he's in for the norwegian 9-ball challenge?!

edit: an answer to roy steffensen's post

It's funny this should come up.

Last night I was gambling some 9-ball, races to 5, $20 a set.

Very first set I lose the coin flip. My opponent broke the balls dry. I ran out. Then I broke and ran out the next four in a row. It was the first time I had ever ran out a full set. Wish I would have won the flip! ;)

Regardless, my opponent went full tilt, didn't make a ball the next set, and quit stuck $40.

I also failed to mention that my opponent was at least 1 or 2 skills levels above me. But playing someone better always motivates me to step it up and play my best. And it also showed me that even though someone is "supposed" to win, doesn't mean they always do.

Everyone tilts at a certain point.

Wait and see, Earl will win a major tournament again soon...
Technically, you could say that about any pro now a days and it could end up true. It's nothing to bet against and of course it will end up happening.

I agree with what someone esle said about the race to 5 thing. Hell, i could get lucky and beat Earl in a race to 5 if I get the rolls and things lay right after the break. I'd put my money on Earl in a longer race or a 10 ahead race or something like that. And that says a lot coming from me because im normally the first person to bash Earl.

Heath<----thinks Johnny Archer, Corey Deuel, Robb Saez, John Schmidt will win a major tournament soon

Heath<----also hopes Earl will get on the right track and stop being a moody jackass.

update: the great earl barely escaped the wrath of vass (tsonev) in a nail biting set. earl squeaked by with a 4-3 win after vass (who was in total control of the set) failed to sink a ball on the hill-hill break. earl was lucky to have a straight in 7-9 combo (which he failed to "get right" for).

next time, vass. :)

There may only be a couple of posters on here that would stand any kind of a chance against Earl in a money game. But I don't honestly think that there is a single poster on here that at least inwardly wouldn't feel real good about the whoopin they gave Earl if they accomplished that!

nobody can deny george played great pool. i used to play him even. now i want the six (and the break). gotta seize the moment. ;)

George is a damn good player. He's my bud's "sparring" partner. A race to 5 is short but still, good pool playing is good pool playing.

as fate would have it, joey "k" dispensed from the weekly tournament the great, (once) invincible earl "the pearl" strickland in an easy 4-1 a$$kicking. nobody was surprised that the great earl was so wrapped up with his conversations with the invisible pool gods that he just couldn't get his mind in the game. but then, joey "k" is no slouch. my money is on joey "k" anytime he matches up with the (once) great earl.

see ya next week, earl! :)

poolmouse,
Huh? "My money is on joey "K" anytime he matches up with the (once) great Earl."
I've met Joey a couple of times. I like him an awful lot. He is a very good player and shows signs that his game is on the upswing. I wish him all the very best.
But...you would take Joey Korsiak over Earl Strickland "ANYTIME HE MATCHES UP WITH EARL STRICKLAND???
I mean no disrespect to you and certainly none to JK, but I personally think your dislike for Earl has severly clouded your judgement.
You mean in a race to 50? A "10 ahead set" The 6 time World 9 Ball Champion, 5 time U.S. Open 9 Ball Champ and on and on...is now a bum???
I strongly disagree with you. I suspect many others will as well.

Incredibly disprespectful tone to this thread. I think it's a shame that a great player has found such hard times. Seems like the LEAST we, as fellow players, owe him is silence. Why not just leave the guy alone.
